Willie Mae "Big Mama" Thornton (December 11, 1926 – July 25, 1984) was an American rhythm and blues singer and songwriter. She was the first to record Leiber and Stoller's "Hound Dog" in 1952, which became her biggest hit. It spent seven weeks at number one on the Billboard R&B charts in 1953 and sold almost two million copies. However, her success was overshadowed three years later, when Elvis Presley recorded his more popular rendition of "Hound Dog". Similarly, Thornton's "Ball 'n' Chain" (written in 1961 but not released until 1968) had a bigger impact when performed and recorded by Janis Joplin in the late 1960s.
Style
Thornton's performances were characterized by her deep, powerful voice and strong sense of self. She tapped into a liberated black feminist persona, through which she freed herself from many of the expectations of musical, lyrical, and physical practice for black women. She was given her nickname, "Big Mama," by Frank Schiffman, manager of Harlem's Apollo Theater, due to her big voice, size, and personality. Thornton made it a point to use her voice to its full potential, once stating that she was louder than any mic and that she didn’t want a mic to ever be as loud as she was. Her big voice was something she became known for as an artist. Joplin’s biographer Alice Echols says that Thornton could sing in a "pretty voice," but insisted against it. Thornton said, "My singing comes from my experience…My own experience. I never had no one teach me nothin’. I never went to school for music or nothin’. I taught myself to sing and to blow harmonica and even to play drums by watchin’ other people! I can't read music, but I know what I'm singing! I don't sing like nobody but myself." Thornton specialized in playing drums and harmonica as well as singing, and she taught herself how to play these instruments simply by watching other musicians perform.
"Good Time" is a song written by Brian Wilson and Al Jardine for the American rock band the Beach Boys. The instrumental track and vocals were recorded by the group in early 1970 but was left unreleased by the group until the 1977 album Love You. In 1972 American pop duo American Spring released "Good Time" as their second single, recording their voices atop the Beach Boys' instrumental track.
Recording history
The basic track for Good Time was first recorded by the Beach Boys on January 7, 1970 at Brian Wilson's home studio with horns and strings overdubbed at a later date. David Sandler remembers that when the session players arrived to Wilson's home, "he went to his office and wrote horn charts while talking to me. It was an amazing horn line, with this overriding French horn riff, and he did the whole thing while having a conversation with me." The track was included on the provisional tracklisting for Add Some Music, but when that album and Reverberation were reconfigured by Warner Bros. Records into Sunflower, "Good Time" was not included.
Good Time is the fifteenth studio album by American country music artist Alan Jackson. It was released on March 4, 2008 and produced five singles on the country singles charts. The first three of these — "Small Town Southern Man", the title track, and "Country Boy" — have all become Number One hits.
Good Time debuted at number one on the U.S. Billboard 200 chart, selling about 119,000 copies in its first week, and was certified Platinum on February 16, 2010.
Production
After working with Alison Krauss for his previous studio album, Like Red on a Rose, Jackson returned to Keith Stegall (who had produced or co-produced all of Jackson's previous albums) as his producer for this album.Good Time is also the first album of his career on which Jackson wrote all of the material by himself.
Singles
"Small Town Southern Man", the first single, was released in late 2007, and in March 2008, the song reached the top of the BillboardHot Country Songs charts, becoming Jackson's first Number One hit since "Remember When" in 2004. The album itself was released in March 2008. Following "Small Town Southern Man" were the album's title track and "Country Boy", both of which became Number One hits as well. "Sissy's Song", a song which Jackson originally recorded for the funeral of his housekeeper, was released in March 2009 as the fourth single, and "I Still Like Bologna" was released in August as the fifth.
Charles Dickens' works are especially associated with London which is the setting for many of his novels. These works do not just use London as a backdrop but are about the city and its character.
Dickens described London as a Magic lantern, a popular entertainment of the Victorian era, which projected images from slides. Of all Dickens' characters 'none played as important a role in his work as that of London itself', it fired his imagination and made him write. In a letter to John Forster, in 1846, Dickens wrote 'a day in London sets me up and starts me', but outside of the city, 'the toil and labour of writing, day after day, without that magic lantern is IMMENSE!!'
However, of the identifiable London locations that Dickens used in his work, scholar Clare Pettitt notes that many no longer exist, and, while 'you can track Dickens' London, and see where things were, but they aren't necessarily still there'.
In addition to his later novels and short stories, Dickens' descriptions of London, published in various newspapers in the 1830s, were released as a collected edition Sketches by Boz in 1836.
London is a poem by Samuel Johnson, produced shortly after he moved to London. Written in 1738, it was his first major published work. The poem in 263 lines imitates Juvenal's Third Satire, expressed by the character of Thales as he decides to leave London for Wales. Johnson imitated Juvenal because of his fondness for the Roman poet and he was following a popular 18th-century trend of Augustan poets headed by Alexander Pope that favoured imitations of classical poets, especially for young poets in their first ventures into published verse.
London was published anonymously and in multiple editions during 1738. It quickly received critical praise, notably from Pope. This would be the second time that Pope praised one of Johnson's poems; the first being for Messiah, Johnson's Latin translation of Pope's poem. Part of that praise comes from the political basis of the poem. From a modern view, the poem is outshined by Johnson's later poem, The Vanity of Human Wishes as well as works like his A Dictionary of the English Language, his Lives of the Most Eminent English Poets, and his periodical essays for The Rambler, The Idler, and The Adventurer.
