Bonnie - CLOSE YOUR EYES (Gold Star Studios) (1965)
NO COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT INTENDED - (Warner Bros. 5817) Out of Los Angeles, this beautifully atmospheric disc by Bonnie was recorded on October 20th, 1965 just three months after recording the Phi-Dan records release, 'Home Of The Brave'. Once thought to have been the work of Phil Spector, this magnificent production as well as 'Home Of The Brave' was the work of Jerry Riopelle. The story goes that supposedly Gold Star Studio engineer Larry Levine, played for Spector, a tape of Riopelle's production of Clydie King's 'The Thrill Is Gone'. Spector was so impressed that he took him under his wing at Philles Records from the summer of 1965 throughout 1966. Lead vocals on 'Home Of The Brave' were once rumored to be that of Miss Veronica Bennett of The Ronettes. The rumor proved to be be false as vocals were handled to perfection by session singer/songwriter, Charlotte O'Hara (Charlotte Ann Matheny) who was christened that name by songwriter Al Hazan and Gold Star engineer Larry Levine for her 1963 Ava Records single, 'What About You'. On both 'Home Of The Brave' and 'Close Your Eyes', lead vocals were by Charlotte with background vocals supplied by Sherlie Matthews and Clydie King while later, Marva Holiday and Nancy Padron performed with Charlotte as the 'touring' Treasures. 'Home Of The Brave' was credited as by Bonnie and The Treasures while the Philles master of 'Close Your Eyes' leased to Warner Bros. records was simply credited to Bonnie.
The 'Wall Of Sound' never sounded as good as it did on these two Jerry Riopelle produced Bonnie singles. L.A.'s "Wrecking Crew' hammered out the powerfully explosive backing tracks and the deep, rich echo was supplied courtesy of Gold Star's iconic echo chamber.

NO COPYRIGHT INFRIINGEMENT INTENDED - (Unreleased Philles Records Recording) In the summer of 1965, record producer Phil Spector, issued a single on his Philles records subsidiary label, Phi-Dan entitled, 'Home Of The Brave' by Bonnie and The Treasures. Composed by Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, the marvelous 'Wall Of Sound' track was produced by Spector protege', Jerry Riopelle and arranged by Nick DeCaro. Although the record featured the lead vocal of Charlotte O'Hara, over the years many incorrectly assumed it was the voice of Ronettes lead singer, Veronica 'Ronnie' Bennett. In October 2020 while sorting through her mothers musical artifacts, Jana O'Hara found among many Gold Star recording Studios acetate discs, one 8 inch disc that was unlabeled. Solving the 56 year old mystery of whether or not a version of 'Home Of The Brave' by the Ronettes existed can now be put to rest. Although the sound quality of the acetate is very poor due to the severe deterioration of the playing surface, it appears to be the unfinished original version of the tune. Produced by Phil Spector, arranged by Jack Nitzsche and engineered by Larry Levine, the recording features the lead vocal of Veronica 'Ronnie' Bennett above the basic backing track before the addition of strings and background vocals.

The Golden Records, humanity's message to the stars, is challenged by the question "What if Hostile Aliens Find Voyagers' Golden Records?" Explore the audacious project of NASA and Frank Drake that launched with the Voyager probes, carrying a trove of Earth's sounds, images, and music into the abyss of space. Designed as a beacon of peace, these records bear greetings in 55 languages, aiming to communicate with potential extraterrestrial life. But what if this message, intended to showcase the beauty and diversity of life on Earth, falls into the wrong hands?
In this video, we delve into the fascinating background of the Golden Records and the debates that have surrounded their creation. From the optimistic visions of their creators to the chilling Dark Forest hypothesis, we examine the potential risks of signaling our presence in the universe. With insights from renowned thinkers like Stephen Hawking, we explore the paradoxical nature of seeking contact with the cosmos. Could our cosmic calling card lead to unforeseen consequences?
As we ponder the balance between curiosity and caution, join us in reflecting on the significance of the Golden Records and the endless possibilities of cosmic exploration. NO COPYRIGHT INFRINGEMENT INTENDED - (Big Bird 127 & Tower 363) Out of Los Angeles, this explosive Spectorian production is one of the best 'Wall of Sound' recordings put to vinyl and the name on label of the duo responsible for this sonic masterpiece is aptly credited. 'Hang On' is the creation of Reese 'Buzz' Clifford and Jan Davis. Clifford's claim to fame prior to this was as a Columbia Records artists and having the hit, 'Baby Sittin' Boogie' while davis was an amazing guitarist/songwriter who lent his talents to many a recording. Recorded at Hollywood's Gold Star Studios with it's legendary echo chamber propped widely open, the on-fire backing track played by L.A.'s 'Wrecking Crew' is all and much more of what you'd expect to experience in a Phil Spector production by The Righteous Brothers. However, in this case, Clifford & Davis concocted a recording that features neither of those parties and yet pulled it off without a hitch. First issued in August of 1967 on the tiny L.A. label, Big Bird, it was then scooped up by the Capitol Records subsidiary, Tower and reissued a few months later in October but still failed to chart. The passing of time has been kind to this disc as original copies on both labels have now become quite desirable. So much so that bootleg discs of both pressings have been manufactured. The bootleg Tower pressing can be found on blue colored vinyl and the Big Bird version was manufactured with a gold rather than a yellow label.
