Golborne (go:[l]bə:n) is a town within the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan, in Greater Manchester, England. It lies 5.4 miles (8.7km) south-southeast of Wigan, 6.1 miles (9.8km) northeast of Warrington and 13.8 miles (22.2km) to the west of the city of Manchester. It has a population of 23,119, increasing to 24,169 at the 2011 Census.
Historically in Lancashire, Golborne owes most of its growth to the mining and textile industries. There was also significant agricultural activity, and many farms still belong to the families who originally owned them.
History
Toponymy
The name Golborne derives from the Old Englishgolde and burna, and means "stream where marsh marigolds grow". The earliest settlements in the present-day town were on banks of the Millingford Brook, hence its name being derived from a water course where calendula grew. Golborne has been recorded in ancient documents as Goldeburn in 1187, Goldburc in 1201, Goseburn and Goldburn in 1212 and Golburne in 1242. Golborne and Gowborne were 16th-century spellings.

Exploring Golborne South Railway Station - closed disused abandoned - Warrington Wigan Newton WCML
Golborne South was a station open between 1839 and 1961 which was on the West Coast mainline.
It served the small coal mining town of Golborne and had local services between Wigan and Newton le Willows / Warrington. It originally opened as Golborne Gates but was known simply as Golborne between 1847 and 1949.
Nothing survives of the actual station but it's site can be easily identified. It's large goods shed does still exist. There is an active campaign to reopen the station.

Did you witness an armed robbery in Golborne?
Officers are appealing for information after an armed robbery at Golborne Post Office on Heath Street on Friday 4 October 2019.
At around 5.30pm two men wearing balaclavas – one wielding a machete and the other an extended baton – threatened staff members and demanded a quantity of cash.
No one was injured during the robbery and the offenders didn’t leave with anything, however staff members were left understandably shaken.
The man holding the baton is described as having a large build and the man with a machete is described as having a slim build and wearing a black North Face coat.
The offenders are believed to have fled in a silver Vauxhall Meriva which was found later abandoned on Legh Street.
