In 1883 the Brand family estate consisted of 8,846 acres (35.80km2) in Sussex (inherited through the families of Morley and Trevor, and valued at £8,121 a year), 6,658 in Hertfordshire, 3,600 in Essex, 2,081 in county Cambridge, and 978 in Suffolk. (Total 22,163 acres (89.69km2) worth £24,753 a year)
(from John Bateman via The Complete Peerage, G.E.C., volume six, 1926, p289).
From 2008 - 2013, the house was subject to a major renovation, organised by the 7th Viscount Hampden, and funded by the sale of one of the estate's paintings.
The house and gardens are open to the public for tours.
The estate at Glynde has belonged to four interlinked families: the Waleys ('from Wales'), Morleys, Trevors, and Brands. The Trevors were originally from north Wales, and descended from Tudor Trevor, a chieftain who in 915 married the daughter of Hywel the Good of Gwynedd and all Wales.
The Glynde manor was not named in the Domesday Book, but it is probably the unnamed peculier of the Archbishop of Canterbury held by one Godfrey of Malling, who also held the manor of South Malling. By the late 12th century, Richard Waleys held four knight fees of the Archbishop, including Glynde.
The Waleys added further estates near Mayfield (Hawkesden and Bainden), which in the 16th century became the centre of the Wealden ironmaking industry and a major source of wealth. William Morley (1531–97) added the manors of Combe and Beddingham, on the other side of Glynde Reach. Harbert Morley (1616–67) added the manor of Preston Beckhelwyn. These remain part of the Glynde Estate.

The Stunning Glynde Church
Glynde Church has a unique place in history, having been built much later than most village churches. The pews are taller than average. Part of my childhood - so amazing to take my father back there.

The history of the church -
There was a medieval church, which stood at an angle to the present building; little is known about it. A new church was built on the site by Richard Trevor, who was Bishop of Durham from 1752 to 1771, and a member of the Trevor family who owned Glynde Place. It was designed by Sir Thomas Robinson, who had worked for Richard Trevor on his Bishop's Palace in County Durham. The work was done by John Morris, a builder from the nearby town of Lewes.
The demolition of the old church, which was in a poor condition, began on Monday 1 August 1763. The foundation and vault of the new church were built that year; the superstructure was built in 1764; the building was completed in 1765. The first service in the new church took place on Sunday 30 June of that year. A newspaper at the time reported that it is "a neat and elegant building, and is very decently ornamented."
Sir Thomas Robinson had visited Italy and was enthusiastic about Renaissance architecture: the church is built in Palladian style.
The walls are faced with knapped flint and have an ashlar base. In the tympanum of the pediment above the west wall, the coat of arms of Richard Trevor is displayed in Portland stone. Above the pediment is a bell, housed in an open ashlar belfry.
The space inside is a perfect rectangle, except that the communion table is in a recess in the thickness of the east wall. There is a coved ceiling. Most of the interior details, including the box pews, are contemporary with the building. In 1841 a gallery, to accommodate more people was built at the west end.
