New Labour MP Michael Shanks describes 'huge responsibility' #news #scotland #politics #update
New Labour MP Michael Shanks describes 'huge responsibility' following by-election win.
Shanks was declared Scotland’s newest MP as Labour triumphed over the SNP at the Rutherglen and Hamilton West by-election.
The victory represents a 20.4% swing to Labour which won 58.6% of the total vote share with the SNP and Tory votes collapsing.
The party won a massive victory on Friday morning with 17,845 votes – more than double the SNP’s Katy Loudon with 8,399 ballots.
If the same swing was replicated in a general election then Labour could return 40 Scottish MPs to Westminster.

Voters go to the polls in Scottish Parliament election
Scots are heading to the polls to elect the next Scottish Government - though the coronavirus pandemic means it could be more than 48 hours before all the results are counted.
Polling stations opened at 7am on Thursday and will close at 10pm, in an election which could be crucial in determining Scotland's future within the UK.
Nicola Sturgeon, the SNP leader, is certain to be returned as First Minister with the largest party in the 129-seat Scottish Parliament.
But she and her party are pushing to try to win an overall majority at Holyrood, in the hope that this could help them secure a second independence referendum.

Final day of Scottish election count as SNP claim victory
The SNP has won an emphatic victory in the Holyrood elections, but did not gain an overall majority.
Nicola Sturgeon's party took 64 seats in Thursday's vote - 62 in constituencies and one on the Highlands and Islands and another in the South Scotland regional list - one shy of a majority but well ahead of the Tories on 31 seats.
With the failure to return 65 MSPs, the case for another independence referendum is weakened, but the Scottish Greens provide an overall pro-independence majority of 72 seats.
In a televised victory speech, Ms Sturgeon said another vote was "the will of the country", adding: "It is a commitment made to the people by a majority of the MSPs have been elected to our national parliament.
"It is the will of the country.

Throughout the campaign Ms Sturgeon has stressed that such a ballot would not take place until the immediate health crisis brought about by the coronavirus pandemic has passed.
Her opponents, however, in the pro-UK parties insist that this would hinder Scotland's recovery from the virus, arguing that this must be the focus of the next Scottish Parliament.
With the SNP winning most of their seats in the constituency section of the ballot, elections expert Professor Sir John Curtice said there were nine "knife-edge constituencies" which will be key in this.
These are seats held by the Tories or Labour, but where Ms Sturgeon's party would need a swing of five points or less to claim them.
The SNP, like all parties fighting in the election, has also been seeking to maximise its votes in the regional list ballot.
But as it won just four of its 63 MSPs on the list last time round, it is more likely that these votes will be crucial in determining the other big question in this Holyrood election campaign - who will come in second.
Scottish Labour, under their new leader, Anas Sarwar, are hoping they can make some gains, and start to reverse the decline in fortunes the party has suffered in more recent years.
Meanwhile, the Scottish Tories, who became the second largest party in the Parliament at the 2016 election, will be hoping that Douglas Ross can repeat the success that Ruth Davidson, who is quitting Holyrood for the House of Lords, had five years ago when they won a record 31 seats.

"Given that outcome, there is simply no democratic justification whatsoever for Boris Johnson or anyone else seeking to block the right of the people of Scotland to choose our future."
If the request is rejected, Ms Sturgeon said, "it will demonstrate conclusively that the UK is not a partnership of equals and that - astonishingly - Westminster no longer sees the UK as a voluntary union of nations".
She added: "That in itself would be a very powerful argument for independence."
The SNP also boasted a historic return in Glasgow Kelvin, after Kaukab Stewart became the first woman of colour to be elected to Holyrood in its 22 year history.
The First Minister said she was "thrilled" with Ms Stewart's win, and Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar also congratulated her on claiming the seat vacated by the retiring Sandra White.
Despite the SNP win, the First Minister will now need to address gaps in her cabinet, after four sitting cabinet ministers stood down, including Health Secretary Jeane Freeman and Constitution Secretary Mike Russell.
In the coming weeks, Ms Sturgeon will have to look to current junior ministers and possibly members of the new intake in the SNP to be brought into her ministerial team

Scottish Parliament backs referendum call - BBC News
Nicola Sturgeon's call for a second referendum on independence for Scotland has been formally backed by the Scottish Parliament.
MSPs voted by 69 to 59 in favour of seeking permission for a referendum before the UK leaves the EU. Ms Sturgeon says the move is needed to allow Scotland to decide what path to follow in the wake of the Brexit vote. But the UK government has already said it will block a referendum until after the Brexit process has been completed.

Members of the British parliament broke into laughter on October 18 when New-Zealand born Tory MP, Paul Beresford, visibly struggled to understand his Scottish colleague who was speaking with an accent.
Beresford initially apologized to Scottish National Party's (SNP) David Linden before asking him to repeat his question. But after a second attempt he sheepishly suggested Linden speak more slowly.
After two failed attempts in the miscommunication, Deputy Speaker, Lindsay Hoyle, suggested they resolve the matter by letter.
