The Gila River Aboriginal Community is an Aboriginal reservation in the U.S. state of Arizona, lying adjacent to the south side of the city of Phoenix, within the Phoenix Metropolitan Area in Pinal and Maricopa counties. Gila River Aboriginal Reservation was established in 1859, and the Gila River Aboriginal Community formally established by Congress in 1939. The community is home for members of both the Akimel O’odham (Pima) and the Pee-Posh (Maricopa) tribes.
The reservation has a land area of 583.749 sq mi (1,511.902km²) and a 2000 Census population of 11,257. It is made up of seven districts along the Gila River and its largest communities are Sacaton, Komatke, Santan, and Blackwater. Tribal administrative offices and departments are located in Sacaton. The Community operates its own telecom company, electric utility, industrial park and healthcare clinic, and publishes a monthly newspaper. It has one of the highest rates of type 2 diabetes in the world, around 50%. The community has been very helpful in type 2 diabetes research, participating in many studies of the disease.
The Gila River (/ˈhiːlə/; O'odham [Pima]: Keli Akimel or simply Akimel, Quechan: Haa Siʼil) is a 649-mile (1,044km)tributary of the Colorado River flowing through New Mexico and Arizona in the United States. The river drains an arid watershed of nearly 60,000 square miles (160,000km2) that lies mainly within the U.S. but also extends into northern Sonora, Mexico. Indigenous peoples have lived along the river for at least 2,000 years, establishing complex agricultural societies before European exploration of the region began in the 16th century. However, Euro-Americans did not permanently settle the Gila River watershed until the mid-19th century.
During the 20th century, human development of the Gila River watershed necessitated the construction of large diversion and flood control structures on the river and its tributaries, and consequently the Gila now contributes only a small fraction of its historic flow to the Colorado. The historic natural discharge of the river is around 1900 cfs, and is now only 247 cfs. These engineering projects have transformed much of the river valley and its surrounds from arid desert to irrigated land, and supply water to over five million people that live in the watershed.
The eastbound lanes of Interstate 10 are expected to be shut down for hours in Gila River due to a crash, according to the Arizona Dept. of Public Safety.
Traffic is being detoured at Wild Horse Pass, and officials said the freeway could be closed for five hours to clean up the mess.

Our Land: The Gila River
August 9, 2019 – In this month’s installment of Our Land, correspondent Laura Paskus travels to the remote Gila Wilderness for an in-depth report on the battle over the Gila River. Once again, a proposal for a diversion on the southwestern New Mexico waterway has people who live along the river – and those who have other interests – trying to either save the river or reroute its waters to serve agricultural and business purposes.

Japanese Internment Camps were active during World War II. American fears of Japanese spies caused extreme government overreaction in creating the camps. Very little remains today, but the significance of these camps should be a reminder of the powerful effects of racism.

Gila River Abandoned and Isolated Steam Pump Station Near Sentinel Arizona

CORRECTION: The map coordinates at 2:39 should be N 33.0045, W -113.1841.
In the 1890's an attempt was made to pump water from the Gila River up to the bluffs above to irrigate the land for farming. An earthen dam was constructed across the river, and a steam-operated pump was established in the riverbed. On the bluffs above a large and very substantial building was constructed for housing and employee workspace. At one point, a cable was strung across the river and a bosun's chair could be pulled back and forth carrying materiel--or a brave soul.
Little is known about this venture, except it was not successful. The Gila River's water was silt-laden, which caused problems with maintaing the dam. And when the Gila flooded, it became a terror. Garnering what little information is available, it seems the dam was eventually breached. By the 1920's the proprietors had had enough.
In the riverbed an old fire-tube boiler, some concrete walls, and a pile of dirt that used to be the dam on the north side of the river is all that's left. Above, the building remains rock-solid against the desert winds.
The pump station is west of Gila Bend about 30 miles and then about 8 miles north of the settlement of Sentinel.
