Recently the Ski resort has been linked with lenzerheide (by cable-car) this connection has linked the transport systems of the two resorts so transport passes will now work in both resorts
History
Arosa is first mentioned about 1330 as Araus. In 1383 it was mentioned as Orossen and in 1428 it was first mentioned as Arosa.
The first known settlements are from the 13th century. After 1300 Arosa German-speaking Walser settlers came from Davos and replaced the original Romansh-speaking inhabitants. During the following centuries, the village had a subsistence alpine pasture economy. Until 1851 it was politically a part of the Davos municipality. Arosa was established as a health resort by a German doctor in 1883, and the first sanatorium was opened in 1888. From 1900 on it gradually developed as a winter resort. In 1938 the first ski lifts were built, and in 1956 the Weisshorn cable car was opened and further rope and chair lifts followed.
The station is the upper terminus of the line and has a number of passenger facilities including a ticket office, shop and cafe.
A 299m long tunnel takes the line under part of Arosa as it ascends to the station. There is a large yard of freight/rolling stock sidings just beyond the station at the very end of the line, as well as a 2-road locomotive shed (essentially for shunters) at the lower end.
Weisshorn cable car
The base station of the cable car up the Aroser Weisshorn is situated very near to the station. Cable cars arrive/depart every 20 minutes during daytime for much of the year.
Services
Hourly passenger services operate on this line (service "R4" on the Rhaetian network) to the city of Chur (where connections with other RhB routes, Postauto buses and SBB trains towards Zurich HB can be made at Chur station), calling at a number of places between. The route is shown as timetable 930 in the Swiss national timetables.
The X-type asteroid has a high albedo of 0.35 and measures about 43 kilometers in diameter. Inclined by 19 degrees to the ecliptic, it orbits the Sun at a distance of 2.8–3.6 AU once every 5.73 years. Its rotational period is close to 7 hours and 45 minutes.
The asteroid is named after the town Arosa, a summer and a winter tourist resort in the Swiss Alps.
Gigi (pronounced:[ʒi.ʒi]) is a 1944novella by French writer Colette. The plot focuses on a young Parisian girl being groomed for a career as a courtesan and her relationship with the wealthy cultured man named Gaston who falls in love with her and eventually marries her.
In 1951, it was adapted for the stage by Anita Loos. Colette had personally picked the yet unknown Audrey Hepburn on first sight to play the title role. Her Aunt Alicia was played by stage legend Cathleen Nesbitt, who was to become Hepburn's acting mentor from that time on. Opening on 24 November 1951 on Broadway at the Fulton Theatre, the play ran for 219 performances (finishing on 31 May 1952) and Hepburn's debut on Broadway earned her a Theatre World Award.
The novella was translated into English by Roger Senhouse and published (with "The Cat" translated by Antonia White) in 1953.
The play's plot generally follows that of the original story, focusing on a young 19th century Parisian girl being groomed for a career as a courtesan. Gigi lives with her mother and grandmother, and takes lessons at the home of her aunt. Her lessons include social manners, conversation, and personal relationships. The family has significant social connections, and have been great friends with the rich playboy Gaston. Gaston is bored with his life, and his only joy seems to be in the company of Gigi and her family.
Aunt Alicia decides that the time is right for Gigi's entry into society. After dressing her up, she is presented to Gaston as a young woman. He is, at first, dismayed at the change. Gradually he realizes that he is attracted to Gigi, and takes her out on the town. As the night progresses, Gaston sees the emptiness of his life and wants something more. He proposes marriage to Gigi, and she gladly accepts.

The train descends from Arosa to Chur on grades up to 6% without rack & pinion and passes over numerous tunnels, viaducts and cliff edges. The views are spectacular. Even more so when seen from the cab! The Regenerative braking system and the train handling are most interesting. Also included are some line-side views in Arosa & Chur. I have attempted to identify many locations using Google & Bing maps and satellite/aerial views. I would welcome any corrections. We travel from Chur (elevation: 593 m) to Arosa (elevation: 1775 m) in an open scenic carriage. The open-topped cars are available only in summer. You can enjoy the forests and alps of Switzerland. The distance from Chur to Arosa is 26 km. Travel time is 1 hour.

Views of and from the Rhaetian Railway ABDe4/4 hauled train from Chur to Arosa on 12 June 1994. The line was still 2400DC - it has since been upgraded to 11Kv 16.7Hz AC. The gauge is 1000mm. The electrical gear was as far as possible identical to ABDe 4/4 484-486 from 1957/58. After the change to ac 487 and 488 were sold to CJ where they pulled waste container trains. They are just now being replaced by the second-hand motor coaches that CJ bought from FW. After 40 years at
the end of their career is quite early for Swiss motor coaches but
considering the age of some parts of the electrical gear (freshed up parts from old motor coach 487' ex 486') it's a good age.
Behind the ABe 4/4 there is D2 4054, a wooden luggage van with
underframe from 1897 that had been fitted with dc heating and MU wiring in 1974 to replace even older D 4002 as a reserve van. Next is one of the peak traffic coaches (Spitzenverkehrswagen) B 2269-2273, built in 1987 on old underframes (except 2272-73) and bogies with components from bus building. Last coach is one of the aluminium EW I B 2315-2319 that were always assigned to the Arosa line and were MU wired right from the beginning and thus delivered in red in 1969.
The use of such a consist in regular trains indicates that one of the three driving trailers was in Landquart. The full use of regenerative braking requires the coaches to be at the down-side from the motor coach.
Normal Summer consist was ABDe or ABe 481-488 - DZ 4231-31/4004 - B 2315-19 - ABt 1701-03
In Winter an additional A 1253-56 (GEX coaches in Summer) was put in and often a second ABDe or ABe added (in MU, of course) so that additional coaches could have been pulled up to Arosa.
Additional trains were handled by the remaining ABDe/ABe 481-488 or by Bernina ABe 4/4 30..34 that could be switched for use under 2200 V dc. You can see two of them at 21:03 on the right hand side.
The Arosabahn trains were equipped with
- vacuum brakes for the whole train (but on the motor coach the vacuum pipe actuated the air brake with a special valve)
- regenerative brake
- rheostatic brake (at moments where it was impossible to feed back current to the catenary)
- direct air brake for motor coach and driving trailer only
- electro magnetic rail brake fed by a battery, on motor coach only
- and yes, each vehicle had a hand brake (only used for parking)...

The Chur–Arosa railway, also called the Arosabahn, is a Swiss meter-gauge railway, which is operated by the Rhaetian Railway (Rhätischen Bahn; RhB). It was built in 1914 by the former Chur-Arosa-Bahn (Chur-Arosa Railway; ChA) to connect the Grisons capital, Chur, with the spa town of Arosa. Since 1942, it has been integrated into the network of the Rhaetian Railway. The name of the former company is still used as a name for the line.
This 26km line contains many civil engineering structures, including a total of 41 bridges,19 tunnels, and 12 avalanche-protection galleries. The landmark of the Arosa Railway is the Langwieser Viaduct. The longest tunnel is the 399 m-long Lüener Rüfe tunnel.
Over its whole length, the line climbs a total of 1155 vertical meters.
Chur is the capital of the canton of Graubünden, Switzerland. The railway station was opened in 1858 and it is the most important railway junction in Graubünden. The station is one of the most important stations on the Rhaetian Railway (RhB) metre-gauge network.

The train descends from Arosa to Chur on grades up to 6% without rack & pinion and passes over numerous tunnels, viaducts and cliff edges. The views are spectacular. Even more so when seen from the cab! The Regenerative braking system and the train handling are most interesting. Also included are some line-side views in Arosa & Chur. I have attempted to identify many locations using Google & Bing maps and satellite/aerial views. I would welcome any corrections. Markus, Gürbetal has provided the following detailed information about the trains:
The train leaving Arosa station at 1:40 (and seen again at 21:07) is remarkable. At the head is ABe 4/4 487 or 488, the motor coaches delivered in 1973 with Berninbahn-carbodies and Arosabahn bogies. The electrical gear was as far as possible identical to ABDe 4/4 484-486 from 1957/58. After the change to ac 487 and 488 were sold to CJ where they pulled waste container trains. They are just now being replaced by the second-hand motor coaches that CJ bought from FW. After 40 years at
the end of their career is quite early for Swiss motor coaches but
considering the age of some parts of the electrical gear (freshed up parts from old motor coach 487' ex 486') it's a good age.
Behind the ABe 4/4 there is D2 4054, a wooden luggage van with
underframe from 1897 that had been fitted with dc heating and MU wiring in 1974 to replace even older D 4002 as a reserve van. Next is one of the peak traffic coaches (Spitzenverkehrswagen) B 2269-2273, built in 1987 on old underframes (except 2272-73) and bogies with components from bus building. Last coach is one of the aluminium EW I B 2315-2319 that were always assigned to the Arosa line and were MU wired right from the beginning and thus delivered in red in 1969.
The use of such a consist in regular trains indicates that one of the three driving trailers was in Landquart. The full use of regenerative braking requires the coaches to be at the down-side from the motor coach.
Normal Summer consist was ABDe or ABe 481-488 - DZ 4231-31/4004 - B 2315-19 - ABt 1701-03
In Winter an additional A 1253-56 (GEX coaches in Summer) was put in and often a second ABDe or ABe added (in MU, of course) so that additional coaches could have been pulled up to Arosa.
Additional trains were handled by the remaining ABDe/ABe 481-488 or by Bernina ABe 4/4 30..34 that could be switched for use under 2200 V dc. You can see two of them at 21:03 on the right hand side.
The Arosabahn trains were equipped with
- vacuum brakes for the whole train (but on the motor coach the vacuum pipe actuated the air brake with a special valve)
- regenerative brake
- rheostatic brake (at moments where it was impossible to feed back current to the catenary)
- direct air brake for motor coach and driving trailer only
- electro magnetic rail brake fed by a battery, on motor coach only
- and yes, each vehicle had a hand brake (only used for parking)...

Recently the Ski resort has been linked with lenzerheide (by cable-car) this connection has linked the transport systems of the two resorts so transport passes will now work in both resorts
History
Arosa is first mentioned about 1330 as Araus. In 1383 it was mentioned as Orossen and in 1428 it was first mentioned as Arosa.
The first known settlements are from the 13th century. After 1300 Arosa German-speaking Walser settlers came from Davos and replaced the original Romansh-speaking inhabitants. During the following centuries, the village had a subsistence alpine pasture economy. Until 1851 it was politically a part of the Davos municipality. Arosa was established as a health resort by a German doctor in 1883, and the first sanatorium was opened in 1888. From 1900 on it gradually developed as a winter resort. In 1938 the first ski lifts were built, and in 1956 the Weisshorn cable car was opened and further rope and chair lifts followed.
