The council area was created in 1996, replacing the East Lothian district of the Lothianregion. The district had been created in 1975 under the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1973, consisting of the old county of East Lothian plus the burghs of Musselburgh and Inveresk, which until then had been in the county of Midlothian.
When abolished, for local government purposes, in 1975, the county of East Lothian bordered the county of Midlothian to the west, and Berwickshire to the south.
The East Lothian Labour Party voted on 22 January 2010 to deselect the previous MP Anne Moffat. The National Executive Committee upheld the decision on 23 March 2010. Fiona O'Donnell was elected in 2010 with an increased majority from 2005.
Gifford/ˈɡɪfərd/ is a village in the parish of Yester in East Lothian, Scotland. It lies approximately 4 miles south of Haddington and 25 miles east of Edinburgh.
The first Hugo de Giffard's grandson, Hugh de Giffard, was a noted magician who built Yester Castle (half a mile south-east of the present-day Yester House), the ruins and an underground chamber (the 'Goblin Ha') of which can be seen in Yester Wood. The same Hobgoblin Hall featured in the poem "Marmion" by Walter Scott.
The Mercat Cross was built in 1780 and is still standing in the centre of the village.
Industries
The initial chief industry in the town was the paper mill, which was once the source of the Bank of Scotland's bank notes. However, this mill closed in the late 18th century and since then the village has largely been residential and supported local farming communities, although a pottery, known as Castle Wynd Pottery, operated at Gifford for a short time in the 1950s.
Historically, the term Lothian referred to a province encompassing most of what is now southeastern Scotland. In the 7th century it came under the control of the Anglian kingdom of Bernicia, the northern part of the later kingdom of Northumbria, but the Angles' grip on Lothian was quickly weakened following the Battle of Nechtansmere in which they were defeated by the Picts. Lothian was annexed to the Kingdom of Scotland around the 10th century.
Subsequent Scottish history saw the region subdivided into three shires—Mid, East, and West Lothian—leading to the popular term 'the Lothians'.
Etymology
The origin of the name is debated. It perhaps comes from the British*Lugudūniānā (Lleuddiniawn in Modern Welsh spelling) meaning 'country of the fort of Lugus', the latter being the pagan god of commerce. Alternatively it may take its name from a watercourse which flows through the region, now known as the Lothian Burn, the name of which comes from the British lutna meaning 'dark or muddy stream'.
Upon the death of David McLetchie, he was replaced by Cameron Buchanan as the next name on the Lothian regional list for the Scottish Conservatives. As Margo MacDonald was elected as an Independent MSP, following her death there was no mechanism to appoint a replacement, and so her seat will remain vacant until the next Scottish Parliament general election.

The Essential East Lothian Day Trip | Exploring Alba

East Lothian is known as Edinburgh’s coast and countryside. It is the go-to destination for people looking to escape the city. This makes it the perfect place for a weekend break from Edinburgh.
Located just 20 minutes east of Edinburgh, East Lothian is one of those places that has all the things that make Scotland such an amazing place to visit. It has beautiful beaches, captivating castles, and simply stunning views.
Add in unique experiences like going alpaca trekking or visiting one of the oldest whisky distilleries in Great Britain, and you can see why I loved the place!

Thanks for watching.
This is a collaboration between myself, fellow drone operator Calum Main of Main Drones and composer Chris Tolley.
Chris supplied an epic soundtrack and we put our favourite views of the region together for it.

Ahead of the summer holidays, and in anticipation of an influx of visitors to the region, I’ve put together a short guide to an amazing day trip around East Lothian.
In this guide I’ll share with you some of the towns, cafés, beaches, walks, and lesser known areas I’ve come to love after a couple of years exploring the area. I hope this guide will help you appreciate East Lothian in the same way as those of us lucky enough to call it home.
Those disclaimers, again. I’m not an expert and haven’t done everything. I’m not being paid or compensated in any way to say these things, all my own opinions. I’m focusing on the coast intentionally. This day trip is based entirely around public transport, primarily East Coast Bus #124.
This guide was shot on an iPhone 11. Drone footage kindly supplied by Cheyne. Special thanks to Sandra for the photo of Tyninghame and to Chris for introducing me to a couple of those gems in Dunbar. Edited in Lumafusion.

Join me on a trip out to the beaches of East Lothian where I discover some hidden gems I had no idea even existed! East Lothian is famous for its stunning coastline, fine beaches and world-class golf courses. But what I find today is a little less ordinary! Did you know about these treasures???
Filmed at Aberlady and Dunbar beaches (with a wee peek at Dunbar Harbour) on Thursday 24th March 2022.
