The first reference to Catalonia and the Catalans appears in the Liber maiolichinus de gestis Pisanorum illustribus, a Pisan chronicle (written between 1117 and 1125) of the conquest of Minorca by a joint force of Italians, Catalans, and Occitans. At the time, Catalonia did not yet exist as a political entity, though the use of this term seems to acknowledge Catalonia as a cultural or geographical entity.
The counties that would eventually make up the Principality of Catalonia were gradually unified under the rule of the Count of Barcelona. In 1137, both the County of Barcelona and the Kingdom of Aragon were unified dynastically, creating the Crown of Aragon, but Aragon and Catalonia retained their own political structure and legal traditions. Because of these legal differences and their use of different language —Aragonese and Catalan— an official recognition of the Catalan Counties as a distinct political entity with its own institutions, laws and political community became necessary.
Barcelona on ‘extreme danger’ red alert as airport flooding cancels flights
Barcelona was given a new red alert warning of “extreme danger” on Monday, with the city being hit by rainstorms and floods, causing chaos for road, train and air traffic.
Catalonia’s regional government warned of “continuous and torrential” rain across the Barcelona metropolitan area and surrounding areas six days after flash floods devastated the Valencia region, killing more than 200 people.
Residents were asked not to travel and to avoid being near rivers, waterways and flood drains.

Brief Political History of Catalonia
This video explores the history of Catalonia and looks to see how it ended up as part of Spain while maintaining a strong sense of distinctiveness. It begins with the first people, traces its path as a Roman colony, its high point as a medieval kingdom and its union with Castille. It continues with the development of Catalan nationalism, its difficult years during the Franco regime, and why in recent times its government and population have sought independence from Spain at different points despite its increasing prosperity.
This referendum was not the region's first.

Why Do Some Catalans Want Independence From Spain? | History of Catalonia 800 - 2021
Catalonia/Catalunya/Cataluña is an autonomous community in the northeast of Spain that in recent years had an increasingly visible movement asking for full independence, culminating in an election in 2017 that the Spanish government deemed unconstitutional and illegal. In February 2021, the Catalan rapper Pablo Hastél was arrested for lyrics and tweets insulting the Spanish royal family and praising groups such as ETA (Euskadi Ta Askatasuna) and GRAPO (Grupos de Resistencia Antifascista Primero de Octubre), Basque and Marxist armed groups. This has sparked more protests across Spain but especially in Catalonia. In this video I take a look at the history of Catalonia and the roots of its independence movement. Was it ever an independent kingdom? How long have Catalans wanted independence? A...

In Catalonia’s nativity scenes, right next to baby Jesus, Mary and Joseph, an extraordinary (defecatory) figure graces the manger. With his pants around his ankles, the tiny figurine can be found squatting and … well … pooping. Legend has it that in the 18th century, farmers defecated onto their land in order to fertilize the soil. Today, the tradition lives on in the form of the figurines, known as “caganers.” If you’re looking to add a pooping man to your own holiday celebrations, brothers Sergi and Marc Alos are your guys. They’ve made a booming business across Catalonia keeping the centuries old tradition alive.

On October 1st Catalonia held a controversial referendum on independence. Before the vote took place, the Spanish Constitutional Courts ruled the vote illegal and sent the national guard to stop it from happening. Despite government opposition, the vote was held and clashes between voters and police ensued.
Ninety percent of the participants voted in favor of independence, but public surveys say that current support for independence in Catalonia is only 41 percent.
Despite the contested referendum results, Catalonia has declared independence unilaterally. In response, Spain is moving to dissolve the Catalan regional government, remove its leaders from office and hold regional elections.

And why is Spain so unwilling to let go of its northeastern community?
