German WW1 SM U-19 U Boat Deck Gun Bangor
I'm over in Ward Park Bangor to film this German U Boat deck gun dating from World War 1 and the Battle of Jutland 1916.
SM U-19 was a German Type U 19 U-boat built for the Imperial German Navy. Her construction was ordered on 25 November 1910, and her keel was laid down on 20 October 1911, at the Kaiserliche Werft Danzig. She was launched on 10 October 1912, and commissioned into the Imperial German Navy on 6 July 1913.
U-19 conducted 12 patrols, sinking 46 ships totalling 64,816 tons, including Santa Maria (5,383 tons) off Lough Swilly on 25 February 1918, Tiberia (4,880 tons) off Black Head near Larne on 26 February 1918, and HMS Calgarian (17,500 tons) off Rathlin Island on 1 March 1918.
On 11 November 1918, U-19 was surrendered to the British, and was broken up at Blyth sometime in 1...

U32 - German Submarine Soldiers | Full Documentary
30 people in a confined space, hard work around the clock and no contact with friends or family - life on one of the most modern submarines in the world is not for the faint of heart. The documentary accompanies the crew of the German U32 submarine on its journey from the Eckernforde naval base through the difficult-to-navigate Kiel Canal to Plymouth in England. The tasks of the crew even push the hard-boiled soldiers to their limits, as our submarine documentary shows.

Submarine Driving on the Street: Heavy Haulage of U-Boat U17 to Exhibition
On May 21, 2023, the heavy transport of the U-boat U17 to the Speyer Museum of Technology took place. Four heavy haulage trucks were needed to transport the 500-ton submarine on 32 axles 4 kilometers to the museum site. There it is to be prepared for onward transport to the nearby Museum of Technology Sinsheim.
The journey of U17 originally began on April 29 in Kiel and led first through the Kiel Canal (https://youtu.be/RjdQ28AN8J0) and later on the Rhine past the the Cologne Cathedral to the harbor of Speyer.

Deck Gun from German Submarine U 19
This gun was presented to the town of Bangor in 1920 to mark the award of a Victoria Cross to Commander Barry Bingham, of Bangor Castle, now the City Hall.
Bingham (1881 - 1929) won the V.C. at the Battle of Jutland in 1016, for his gallantry in leading the small destroyers under his command close to the German battleships. His own ship 'Nestor' was sunk, but he was rescued from the North Sea and held captive in Germany till 1918. He was a son of Load and Lady Clanmorris.
U-19 (not UB-19 at it says on the original plaque) was launched in Danzig in 1912. She served through the whole of the 1914 - 18 war, going out on 12 patrols and sinking 46 ships, In 1916 U19 landed the leading Irish Volunteer Sir Roger Casement in co. Kerry, shortly before the Easter Rising. The commander of U19 on thi...

Unbelievable Footage Of WW2 German U-boat Snorkeling And Surfacing #uboat #submarine #navalhistory
The Journey of U-2513
German submarine U-2513 was a submerged beast, a Type XXI U-boat engineered by Nazi Germany's Kriegsmarine. Though her time in active service during World War II was uneventful, her story became legendary through her post-war assignments and fate.
Birth and Early Life
Launched on 14 September 1944, U-2513 was a creation of the shipyard Blohm & Voss in Hamburg. With her keel laid down on 19 July 1944 and commissioned into service on 12 October the same year, she was envisioned as a symbol of naval superiority for the Kriegsmarine. Her first commander, Kapitänleutnant Hans Bungards, led her until 26 April 1945, passing the command to Fregattenkapitän Erich Topp, one of Germany's most respected U-boat commanders.
However, despite her advanced design and capabili...

Greyhound 2020
U.S. Navy Cmdr. Ernest Krause is assigned to lead an Allied convoy across the Atlantic during World War II. His convoy, however, is pursued by German U-boats. On 11 November 1918, U-19 was surrendered to the British, and was broken up at Blyth sometime in 1919 or 1920.
The main gun of U19 was donated to the people of Bangor, Co. Down and today sits near the War Memorial in the town's Ward Park. It was donated by the Admiralty in recognition of the valorious conduct of Commander The Hon. Edward Bingham whilst on board HMS Nestor while fighting in the Battle of Jutland in July 1916, for which he received the Victoria Cross.
It is remarkable that this is the very same submarine that landed Roger Casement in Ireland to further his clandestine activities!
'Casement confided his personal papers to Dr Charles Curry, with whom he had stayed at Riederau on the Ammersee, before he left Germany. He departed with Robert Monteith and Sergeant Daniel Beverley (Bailey) of the Irish Brigade in a submarine, initially the SM U-20, which developed engine trouble, and then the SM U-19, shortly after the Aud sailed.
In the early hours of 21 April 1916, three days before the rising began, the German submarine put Casement ashore at Banna Strand in Tralee Bay, County Kerry. Suffering from a recurrence of the malaria that had plagued him since his days in the Congo, and too weak to travel, he was discovered[by whom?] at McKenna's Fort (an ancient ring fort now called Casement's Fort) in Rahoneen, Ardfert, and arrested on charges of treason, sabotage and espionage against the Crown. "He was taken to Brixton Prison to be placed under special observation for fear of an attempt of suicide. There was no staff at the Tower [of London] to guard suicidal cases."[39] He sent word to Dublin about the inadequate German assistance. The Kerry Brigade of the Irish Volunteers might have tried to rescue him over the next three days, but had been ordered by its leadership in Dublin to "do nothing"[40] — not a shot was to be fired in Ireland before the Easter Rising was in train.'

The commander of U19 on this mission was Raimund Weisbach, who the previous year had been torpedo officer on U20 when she sank the 'Lusitania'.
Johannes Spiess commanded her in 1917 and 1918, when they operated around Ulster. He torpedoed the steamer 'Tiberia' off Belfast Lough and the liner 'Calgarian' and tanker 'Santa Maria' off Rathlin Island. For sinking the large 'Calgarian' . Spiess was awarded the Knight's Cross. He later wrote a book about his career 'Six Years of Submarine Operations'.
The gun, which is a 105mm type, was removed from U19 after she surrendered with the rest of the German Navy, and was scrapped at Blyth in north-east England in 1919-20. The Admiralty then decided the gun should be allocated to Bangor. It was placed on this spot in October 1920.
Bangor's only other VC winner is sergeant William Mawhinney, who was born in the town in 1837 and spent his early life in Newtownards. While serving with the 44th (East Essex) Regiment he was awarded the VC for gallantry on 20th October 1854, during the Crimean War.
Unveiled by the Mayor of North Down, Councillor Tony Hill, 31 October 2009, to mark the 70th anniversary of Bingham's death, and the 25th anniversary of the opening of North Down Museum at his former home.

However, despite her advanced design and capabilities, U-2513 saw no combat. As the war ended, she surrendered on 9 May 1945 at Horten Naval Base, Norway, where she was transferred to Oslo and later to Lishally, Northern Ireland.
Crossing the Atlantic: A New Chapter
In August 1945, U-2513 embarked on a new journey, this time to the United States. By August 1946, she was undergoing a significant overhaul in Charleston, South Carolina. Following the overhaul, she was assigned to Key West, Florida. Here, she became integral in the U S Navy's evaluation tests and the development of both submarine and antisubmarine warfare tactics.
President Harry S. Truman, intrigued by the advanced capabilities of the Type XXI U boats, visited U-2513 on 21 November 1946. During this historic visit, the submarine showcased its impressive schnorchel (snorkel) system, diving to a depth of 440 feet with the President on board.
A Brief Service and a Final Farewell
After President Truman's visit, U-2513 continued various operations along the U S East Coast. Her time in active service, however, was brief. By mid-June 1949, she was moved to Portsmouth, New Hampshire, where she was placed out of service by July of the same year.
Her end came in 1951 when, following orders from the Chief of Naval Operations, U-2513 was sunk as a target during rocket tests conducted by the destroyer USS Robert A Owens. On 7 October 1951, she rested on the seabed, 70 nautical miles west of Key West, Florida.
Legacy in Depth
Today, the remains of U-2513 lie approximately 213 feet underwater at coordinates 24 degrees 52.015 minutes North 83 degrees 18.594 minutes West, roughly 23 nautical miles northwest of the Dry Tortugas. The site is a remote, seldom-visited gem, accessible only to experienced divers skilled in decompression diving.
Here are the ship's General Characteristics:
Class and Type : Type XXI submarine
Displacement : Surfaced - 1,621 tons, Submerged - 1,819 tons
Length : 76.70 meters
Beam : 8 meters
Height : 11.30 meters
Draught : 6.32 meters
Propulsion : Diesel-electric with silent running capabilities
Installed Power : Diesel - 4,000 PS, Electric - 5,000 PS, Silent running - 226 PS
Speed : Surfaced - 15.6 knots (diesel), Submerged - 17.2 knots (electric)
Range : Surfaced - 15,500 nautical miles at 10 knots, Submerged - 340 nautical miles at 5 knots
Armament : 6 bow torpedo tubes, 23 torpedoes or 17 torpedoes and 12 mines, anti-aircraft guns
Here is our Reflection:
German submarine U-2513 remains a testament to the ingenuity and ambition of naval engineering during World War II. From her quiet service with the Kriegsmarine to her active role in shaping post-war naval strategies for the U S Navy, her story is carved into the depths of history. While she rests today in the tranquil depths of the Gulf of Mexico, U-2513’s legacy continues to inspire and fascinate historians and maritime enthusiasts alike.

Greyhound 2020
U.S. Navy Cmdr. Ernest Krause is assigned to lead an Allied convoy across the Atlantic during World War II. His convoy, however, is pursued by German U-boats. Although this is Krause's first wartime mission, he finds himself embroiled in what would come to be known as the longest, largest and most complex naval battle in history: The Battle of the Atlantic.
