Type II U-boat brief - #8
READ THIS DESCRIPTION!
Briefing on the German Type II coastal U-boat in WW2
ERRATA
In the briefing I indicate that the Type II U-boat carried six torpedoes (three in tubes and three reloads). The reference books indicate a total of five torpedoes were carried. I put six in the briefing because I came across a remark made by Wolfgang Luth who indicated they carried six on the Type IIs. He made multiple combat patrols in them so I figured he'd know. Unfortunately, I can't find the reference with that remark by Luth. So to be on the historically correct side - they carried five torpedoes total.

Start Up of a WW2 Submarine Diesel Engine of a German U-Boat 🔊
Start up of a 6-cylinder diesel engine. The submarine engine RS 34 S was used in the Type XXIII submarines. Originally, it was designed by MWM as a diesel generator for the battleships Bismarck and Tirpitz. The engine has 108 liters cylinder capacity (18 liters for each cylinder) and 576 hp at 850 revolutions per minute.
The engine is located in a museum in Kiel, Germany: http://www.maschinenmuseum-kiel-wik.de
These are the steps performed to start the engine:

0:32 - After reaching 2 bar oil pressure, the older machine operator turns the engine manually.
1:44 - The engine is turned by compressed air with cylinder taps opened to blow out water or oil, if present. The engine is still being pre-lubricated.

Немецкая подводная лодка типа UB-I / German Type UB I Submarine

German U-Boats That Were Recovered
U-boats! Winston Churchill's greatest fear of World War 2, they were both silent and deadly and the most feared nautical hunters of both World Wars. But as the tables turned and U-boats began to be sunk in their dozens, it was only natural that some of them would be found, raised and boarded again even by some of their old crew! Join us as we reveal the legacy of 3 German U-boats the UC-61, UB-110, and the U843.
The original video was taken down by our team preemptively for copyright reasons but we're pleased to present a new and improved version with new information!
