THE NEW YORK NEW HAVEN AND HARTFORD RAILROAD " SOUTHERN NEW ENGLAND " TRAVEL FILM MD52144
American Locomotive (Alco), General Electric, and the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad Company teamed up to create this 1950s color film promoting the aforementioned rail line. L&HR NYS&W L&NE The Susquehanna in Film
A short film from the Prelinger Archives, this one has a visit to Warwick, NY on the L&HR, followed by scenes of multiple RS-1's on freights on the NYS&W including a cab ride and interchange with the L&NE. Then some scenes of the EMD GP20 demonstrators attempting to generate a sale to the Susquehanna, followed by the result of that demo, the delivery of 3 new GP18's to the NYS&W from the Erie at Campbell Hall, NY (I'm assuming this location, correct me in the comments if I'm wrong). Finally, a short commuter train somewhere in New Jersey and a GP18 powered local in the late 60's. Sounds added from my video library and Arkay Records. Enjoy!

New York Central's Jet-Powered High Speed Train
In the 1960s, rail passenger travel was on a steep decline in the United States. Cars and airplanes were taking over, but the New York Central Railroad had a plan. The railroad's president, Alfred E. Perlman, figured speed would re-attract riders, a speed of 200 mph (322 km/h) to be exact. He tasked research team lead Don Wetzel with the job of researching and developing a high speed train to test potential high speed routes. The catch was, Wetzel had only 30 days to make it happen, so things would be done on the cheap. The New York Central's Jet Train was thus born out of an RDC car.

Offering “a wholesome way of life” we’re told how the area is also known for its railroads as a train speeds past at mark 01:30, and that the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad Company is a reminder of the trains that made New England great. We learn of the first diesel electric switcher in New England at mark 01:50 and see passenger and freight trains as well as freight yards such as the Cedar Hill Yard in New Haven, Connecticut (mark 02:38) as the narrator touts their various upgrades and associated benefits. We learn how fright line schedules are coordinated with other railroad companies. The film visits a freight yard in Maybrook, New York, as cars are coupled with engines and cabooses. Near mark 06:00 the film looks at some of the obstacles train lines face, including operating at different elevations including within valleys, each presenting a different power need. At mark 06:45 we learn how diesel electric engines (like the one made by Alco and GE) have alleviated some problems and provide more motoring power while taking a detailed look at the behemoths. “What a powerful puller our diesel electric is,” the narrator boasts at mark 11:41, while continuing to explain how diesel engines make better time than steamers because they do not have to routine make stops for water. Such advancements, the viewer is reminded, are symbols of the train line’s “railroad leadership.”

Enjoy!

This is a brief preview of the Lehigh & New England Railroad Volume 1. For more details and ordering information, please visit our website.
DVD summary below:
The Lehigh & New England was a rarely photographed hometown railroad which traversed a tumultuous scenic route through Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York states.
Though known as being coal carrier, it also carried cement, slate and some merchandise traffic.
Its paint scheme represented the railroad's two primary online commodities; black for coal and white for cement.
The railroad's bulls-eye or "fried egg" herald is a variation of its parent Lehigh Coal & Navigation Company's "Old Company Lehigh" logo.
Although 50 years have passed since its demise, the Lehigh & New England's early exit from the railroad scene and its all Alco diesel roster continues to stir interest among railfans today.
In Volume 1 we'll look at operations of the mainline from Hauto to Pen Argyl and the Catasauqua, Bethlehem and Allentown branches between 1949 and 1961, through the films of Charlie and Ken Bealer, Arthur Angstat and the rare Randolph Kulp film collection of the Lehigh Valley Chapter NRHS.
