Widely admired for his strong leadership qualities, Washington was unanimously elected president in the first two national elections. He oversaw the creation of a strong, well-financed national government that maintained neutrality in the French Revolutionary Wars, suppressed the Whiskey Rebellion, and won acceptance among Americans of all types. Washington's incumbency established many precedents, still in use today, such as the cabinet system, the inaugural address, and the title Mr. President. His retirement from office after two terms established a tradition that lasted until 1940, when Franklin Delano Roosevelt won an unprecedented third term. The 22nd Amendment (1951) now limits the president to eight years in office.
The city is known for being near the Gorge Amphitheatre, sometimes called "The Gorge at George". The Gorge Amphitheatre is the host of the annual Sasquatch! Music Festival.
The city also celebrates national holidays such as the Fourth of July, and Washington's Birthday, with cherry pies. It bakes the world's largest cherry pie every year on July 4, and serves it to the crowd.
History
George began as a large irrigation district between Quincy and Moses Lake. In the early 1950s, the need for a town to support the local agriculture business was evident, and the Bureau of Land Management agreed to 339 acres (1.37km2) for this purpose. The winning (and only) bid was that of the local pharmacist, Charlie Brown. Brown invested his own money into the venture, and with help from a University of Washington instructor, the town structure was planned. The plan included streets, utilities, etc.
The statue depicts Washington dressed in breeches with an apron and medallion decorated with Masonic symbols. Washington holds a tri-cornered hat in the crook of his proper left arm, and a gavel in his proper right hand. He wears an open overcoat with buttons and has a short podium to his proper right. Washington's attire depicts the first President as he may have looked when he laid the cornerstone for the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C. The sculpture is mounted upon a stepped, inscribed granite base.
The base of the sculpture is inscribed with the following:
He was an outspoken Democrat in politics, opposed to slavery but unsympathetic to abolitionism.
Due to his Calvinist ideas about the unsuitability of such a hobby for a clergyman, Bethune, an avid fisherman, worked anonymously on five of the US editions of Izaak Walton's The Compleat Angler under the pseudonym The American Editor.
Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune and Dr. George Washington Carver
Two faith walkers from African-'American history who refused to be stopped by sickness or racism or any difficulty. Dr. Bethune and Dr. Carver forged past all manner of challenges to pursue their God-given purposes. They are great examples of the power of pressing toward the mark and trusting God every step along the way.
