He was the eldest son of John Stokes of Athlone and Margaret Forster his wife.
He was born on 28 December 1843 in Athlone, Ireland.
He was educated at Galway grammar school, Queen's College, Galway, and at Trinity College, Dublin, where he graduated B.A. in 1864.
He subsequently proceeded M.A. 1871, B.D. 1881, and D.D. 1886.
In 1866, Stokes was ordained for the curacy of Dunkerrin in the diocese of Killaloe in the then established church of Ireland, and in the following year was appointed to the curacy of St. Patrick's, Newry.
In 1868, he was nominated first vicar of the newly constituted charge of All Saints, Newtown Park, co. Dublin, which he held till his death.
In 1893, he was elected by the chapter of St. Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin, to the prebend and canonry of St. Andrew.
Thomas made his professional debut starting on 28 January 2014 in a 2–0 League One loss to Leyton Orient, with City short on options up front manager Steven Pressley said he had no problems with throwing Thomas into the starting lineup.
On 24 October 2015, Thomas joined Yeovil Town on a one-month loan and made his debut in a 3–2 defeat to Cambridge United.
International career
In April 2013 he was called up to the Wales U17 team. He made his debut on 11 April 2013 coming off the bench in the 1–0 win against Northern Ireland U17. He made his first start and scored his first international goal, on 12 April 2013, in the 1–1 draw against Faroe Islands U17. He scored his second goal in his third appearance against Malta U17 on 22 August 2013. On his sixth appearance, Thomas got his third international goal scoring against Slovenia U17 on 28 September 2013. His fourth goal came on his seventh appearance against Czech Republic U17 on 18 February 2014. Thomas made his Wales U19 debut against Montenegro in September 2014. Thomas scored his first goal for Wales U19 in a 2–1 win against Albania U19 in November 2014.
George Thomas was a prominent schoolboy cricketer who represented Madras Schools and South Zone Schools in the national Cooch Behar Trophy in 1957-58, 1958-59 and 1959-60. At first he played as an opening bowler, but in his final season, when South Zone Schools won the trophy, he played as an opening batsman and wicket-keeper.
He made his first-class debut as a fast bowler and tail-end batsman for Madras in 1962-63 against Kerala in the Ranji Trophy. He took the wicket of the first opening batsman in each innings, and Madras won by an innings, but he was no-balled for throwing. He took one wicket in the next match, which was ruined by rain, and was then omitted. Thomas returned to the team in 1963-64 and opened the bowling in all three of Madras's matches, taking five wickets at an average of 33.80 in an attack based on spinners led by V. V. Kumar.
He played the first match in 1964-65, taking one wicket, and was left out of the team for the next two matches. He returned for the last match, against Andhra, and took 4 for 30 and 2 for 41 in an innings victory.
Tom Stokes (born 9 December 1992) is a footballer currently without a club. In early 2010, rumours surfaced that Bolton Wanderers, amongst others, were after the youngster; eventually no deals were arranged, as the player chose to stay at his then club Yeovil Town FC to further his development. Stokes first appeared for Yeovil Town FC on 15 January 2010, at 17, in a 1–2 defeat at Mansfield Town a club who later offered interest in the striker, showing glimpses of an emerging talent.
On 2 March 2010, Yeovil confirmed Stokes would join Hearts FC on loan after numerous reports he had a fall out with boss Terry Skiverton but again the deal fell through and he stayed at the club. Stokes' contract ran out in July and Yeovil Town FC decided against renewing it.
Toward the end of the 2009-2010 season he spent a month on loan at Grays Athletic where he scored a penalty as a debutant.
George Thomas: The Rock of Chickamauga | Full Documentary
Union General George Thomas has been overshadowed by some of the more prominent Civil War generals, like Ulysses S. Grant, Robert E. Lee, William T. Sherman, and Thomas "Stonewall" Jackson. However, he was an incredible commander and an even more amazing person. He started out being a slave owner but would end up fighting for African American Civil Rights. The Civil War became a catalyst for the change in his way of thinking and demonstrates that historical characters are not static. They change over time.
