The ancient art of Nigeria’s Benin bronzes
The Kingdom of Benin was an ancient kingdom in what is now southern Nigeria.
In Benin city, the capital of Edo state, the Royal Bronze Casters Guild, which was founded in the 13th Century, lives on.
Hand-sculpted clay figures are transformed into bronzes using an ancient wax-casting process passed down through the centuries. Ashionye Ogene reports from the UNESCO world heritage site, Igun Street.

What are the Benin Bronzes? - The arts past and present (6/6)
What are the Benin Bronzes? In the late 1800s, the Benin Empire in Africa was a hotbed of artistic skill and the British wanted a piece of it - as many pieces as they could steal, in fact. But what were the beautiful Benin Bronzes and did the current Queen of England really fence stolen goods.

The London History Show: The Benin Plaques
Hello all. We are learning about the British Museum at the moment, and that includes a lot of world cultures that were unfamiliar to me, such as that of the Kingdom of Benin. As such, I'm sure there are a lot of good sources out there that are inaccessible to me or that I did not find here in my London lockdown. I've given my sources below, but if you have others that give a different perspective, please let me know.
On a related note, there are several words in this one that I've only ever seen written down, so if you know better than me on the pronounciations, let me know in the comments. I'm already pretty sure I got Erediauwa wrong.
In this video, we look at stolen African artworks in the British Museum commonly called the "Benin Bronzes".

Africa's looted art | DW Documentary
Africa’s colonial overlords brutally stripped it of countless cultural treasures. Now, the fate of these items is being hotly debated in Europe and Africa as well. Some say the pieces should be returned, while others have reservations.
European museums proudly present art and cultural artifacts from all over the world. But until recently, many of them have never considered their own complicity in the brutal ways in which the pieces were acquired. Only slowly are they starting to include the people to whose ancestors these artifacts once belonged in their decisions, although European colonial overlords pillaged and looted them in the first place.
The issue of restitution is taking on a new urgency in Germany, last but not least because of the controversy surrounding Berlin's Humboldt Foru...

Made in Africa: Ancient art by the Craftsmen of the Benin Kingdom
The Benin Bronzes, considered as one of Africa’s greatest treasures, which were looted in 1897 when British invaded the Kingdom of Benin, which is now in Southern Nigeria.
The craftsmen of Benin who are famous for their artwork are keeping the tradition of bronze casting alive for centuries now. For them it’s a way of life and one of the ways of keeping their heritage for future generations.
This is the story of one such artist whose family is associated with this ancient artwork for the past 600 years.

The issue of restitution is taking on a new urgency in Germany, last but not least because of the controversy surrounding Berlin's Humboldt Forum, which is home to non-European collections. It's estimated that more than 1.5 million artifacts from all around the world are held in storage at Germany's ethnological museums. The Linden Museum in Stuttgart alone holds 60 thousand pieces from Africa. How many of them were stolen? And how do museums address the fact that their colonialist collectors had blood on their hands?
This documentary takes an African perspective on some examples, including valuable bronzes from Nigeria, an ornamental prow of a boat from Cameroon, and what is known as the Witbooi Bible from Namibia.
What do the people in the African countries where the pieces originated think about all this? What are the views of researchers, museum directors, artists and curators? What emotions arise when the frequently painful past is stirred up and examined? And how significant is the issue in the context of problems such as poverty, hunger and corruption in former colonies?

The Benin Bronzes, considered as one of Africa’s greatest treasures, which were looted in 1897 when British invaded the Kingdom of Benin, which is now in Southern Nigeria.
The craftsmen of Benin who are famous for their artwork are keeping the tradition of bronze casting alive for centuries now. For them it’s a way of life and one of the ways of keeping their heritage for future generations.
This is the story of one such artist whose family is associated with this ancient artwork for the past 600 years.

Returning the Benin Bronzes
In 1897, during the violent sacking of Benin City by British armed forces, thousands of artefacts were removed and subsequently sold in London.
116 objects, known as Benin Bronzes, eventually entered the collection of the University of Cambridge’s Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology (MAA).
The University is now in the process of arranging for the return of these objects to Nigeria.
In December 2022, the UK’s Charity Commission granted consent for the University to proceed.
In this film, shot at The Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, the museum’s Director, Professor Nicholas Thomas, and its Senior Curator in Anthropology, Dr Mark Elliott, explain how the Benin Bronzes entered the collection, why the University is now returning them, and how this process has developed.

Some of the world’s greatest cultural and historical treasures are housed in London’s British Museum, and a significant number of them were taken during Britain’s centuries-long imperial rule. In recent years, many of the countries missing their cultural heritage have been asking for some of these items back.
Benin City in Nigeria is one of those places. They've been calling for the return of the Benin Bronzes, hundreds of artifacts looted in 1897 when British soldiers embarked a punitive expedition to Benin. Many are now housed in the British Museum.
And it's just the beginning. As the world reckons with the damage inflicted during Europe’s colonial global takeover, the calls for these items to be ...

British museum agrees to return stolen Benin Bronzes to Nigeria
A museum in London has decided to return a collection of treasures stolen in the 19th century to Nigeria.
The items, including the famous Benin Bronzes, were taken as European powers scrambled for colonial domination of Africa in the 19th century.
But as Western museums start to reckon with their colonial past, many are choosing to give back what is not rightfully theirs.

The Benin civilisation is famous for its bronzes. A young boy, Ibi, tells us how they are made using the 'lost wax' process, and why bronze was so important at the time. The people of Benin traded as far away as India and throughout the whole of Africa. When the Portuguese arrived in the late 15th century, they began trading with Europe. The Benin civilisation was one of the largest cities in Africa. Each trade had its own district - there was even a storytellers' district!
This clip is from the BBC series Lost Lands: A series of short animations that take the viewer back in time to explore seven different ancient civilisations related to the Key Stage 2 / 2nd Level history curriculum. Each episode is narrated from the point of view of a young child or teenager living in that era. The animations also feature archaeological remains and archives that reveal where historians find evidence for these ancient ways of life.

This clip could be used to explore bronze-making, the process, and the finished goods. Why were the people of Benin so good at making bronze? Where did they learn to do this? Where did the copper and tin come from? Does it compare with bronze from Bronze Age Britain or Shang China? Could be used as a starting point to explore the impact of Europeans on African society. What happened to Benin, its wealth and power once the Europeans arrived? This could also be used to explore the Oba and his powers. How did he rule the country? Was he as powerful as, for example, a Roman emperor? Or a Shang emperor?
This clip is relevant for teaching History at Key Stage 2 and Second Level.

They also pay tribute to exceptional artistic and cultural significance of the Benin Bronzes themselves.
The film includes footage of a number of the Benin Bronzes in question on display in the museum.

They also pay tribute to exceptional artistic and cultural significance of the Benin Bronzes themselves.
The film includes footage of a number of the Benin Bronzes in question on display in the museum.

In each episode of The London History Show, we'll be looking at a different statue, plaque, building or feature of London's landscape that you can find for yourself, and we'll tell its story. Watch the whole series here: https://tinyurl.com/ybzud2wm

As the world reckons with the damage inflicted during Europe’s colonial global takeover, the calls for these items to be returned are getting louder and louder.

Echoes and Horizons: An Exploration of Museum Culture in Benin City – In Dialogue with Benin
Nigeria operates over 52 museums under the leadership of the National Commission for Museums and Monuments. The NCMM also works to achieve the return of plundered cultural artifacts. During the British colonial era in the 1940s, there was already an Antiquities Service, and the first national museum was founded in Jos in 1952, the same year as the Museum Rietberg. With the 1953 Antiquities Act there came the first successful export ban. Benin City has been home to the National Museum since 1973. Now two more museums are planned: the Benin Royal Museum and the Museum of West African Art (MOWAA).

Nigeria Benin City Is Big!
The Benin Kingdom, located in present-day Edo State, Nigeria, is one of the most iconic and enduring monarchies in Africa. With a history that stretches back over a millennium, it is arguably one of the oldest kingdoms in Nigeria. Known for its rich traditions, remarkable artistic heritage, and sophisticated governance, the kingdom has transitioned gracefully into the modern era while retaining its cultural identity.
Edo State today is not just the cradle of the Benin Kingdom but also a hub of educational and economic advancement, exemplified by institutions like the University of Benin (UNIBEN) and the Nigerian Petroleum Development Company (NPDC).
The Benin Kingdom is believed to have been established as early as 1180 AD, evolving under the leadership of the Ogiso dynasty. This era...

Benin city the capital of Edo State in southern Nigeria, is one of the country’s oldest and most historically significant cities. As the heart of the ancient Benin Kingdom, it is a place where tradition, culture, and modernity blend seamlessly. Known for its vibrant people and rich heritage, the city reflects Nigeria’s diverse and enduring legacy. From its deep historical roots to its rapidly modernizing landscape, Benin City continues to captivate visitors and residents alike.
Benin City’s residential neighborhoods showcase its evolving character and provide insights into the lifestyles of its people. Some of the most prominent areas include the G.R.A and airport residential areas known for their upscale homes and luxurious hotels.
These areas paint a vivid picture of the city’s evolving character and provide a window into the city’s embrace of contemporary living standards and serve as hubs for high-profile residents, including government officials, influential business leaders, and expatriates. The G.R.A, in particular, is distinguished by its spacious streets lined with manicured gardens, large compounds, and a variety of modern amenities, making it a prime choice for families and professionals who prioritize comfort, convenience, and exclusivity. The proximity of these neighborhoods to major transport links, schools, and healthcare facilities adds to their appeal, ensuring that residents have access to all essential services without compromising on their quality of life.
The Airport Residential Area complements the elegance of the G.R.A with its own unique offerings. Known for its modern infrastructure and strategic location near the Benin City airport, it attracts professionals who travel frequently and value quick access to air travel. The area boasts stylish homes, trendy cafes, and a growing number of high-end restaurants, creating a lively yet peaceful atmosphere.
Venturing deeper into the heart of Benin City, we discover neighborhoods which offer a different but equally captivating experience. This bustling area features a mix of residential and commercial spaces, creating a vibrant, dynamic environment. Residents of New Benin benefit immensely from its strategic location, which provides easy access to essential services such as markets, schools, and healthcare facilities. The area is a hive of activity, with shops, businesses, and local vendors lining the streets, catering to the daily needs of its residents. Despite the hustle and bustle, New Benin maintains a sense of community, with friendly interactions among neighbors and a shared pride in the area’s growth and accessibility.
These areas collectively showcase Benin City’s multifaceted character. While areas like the G.R.A and the Airport Residential Area cater to the affluent and those seeking a luxurious lifestyle, neighborhoods such as New Benin highlight the city’s industrious spirit and the resilience of its people. Together, they form a tapestry of cultures, lifestyles, and aspirations, painting a portrait of a city that is both rooted in its rich heritage and reaching for a bright and progressive future.
Over the years, Benin City has undergone remarkable transformation, with the expansion of road networks, development of housing estates, and establishment of modern amenities.
As Benin City grows, it retains its cultural vibrancy and connection to its storied past. The people of the city, known for their warmth and hospitality, continue to uphold traditions through festivals, ceremonies, and daily life. The city’s charm lies not only in its historical landmarks and cultural heritage but also in the character of its neighborhoods, where every street tells a story of resilience, community, and progress.
The new shopping mall in Benin City, Nigeria, marks a significant milestone in the city’s urban and commercial development. Situated in a prime location, the mall offers a blend of retail, dining, and entertainment options, catering to a wide audience. Its modern architecture and state-of-the-art facilities make it a key attraction, enhancing the city’s appeal and promoting local and international commerce.
Across Nigeria, the rise of shopping malls reflects the country’s dynamic economic landscape and growing middle class. Cities like Lagos, Abuja, and Port Harcourt have seen a surge in retail developments, providing residents with access to global brands and modern shopping experiences. These malls also serve as hubs for social interaction, featuring cinemas, food courts, and recreational facilities.
The trend signals a shift toward urbanization and modern consumer culture, with developers focusing on meeting the demands of a younger, tech-savvy population. By fostering job creation and supporting local businesses, these malls are contributing to Nigeria's broader economic diversification and infrastructural growth.

This era, characterized by centralized authority and progressive governance, laid the foundation for a flourishing empire. By the 12th century, Oranmiyan from the Ife Kingdom introduced the lineage of Obas, marking a period of territorial expansion and cultural evolution.
By the 15th and 16th centuries, the kingdom had become a powerful empire, with Benin City emerging as a center of commerce, diplomacy, and artistry. The kingdom's influence extended over vast territories, and its thriving trade attracted European powers, including the Portuguese and the British.
A pivotal moment in Benin’s history came in 1897 during the British invasion. Tensions over trade and territorial control culminated in a brutal assault on Benin City by British forces. The city was looted, its art treasures—including the world-famous Benin Bronzes—were plundered, and Oba Ovonramwen Nogbaisi was exiled.
Despite this upheaval, the Benin Kingdom demonstrated remarkable resilience. The monarchy was restored in the early 20th century and has continued to play a vital role in preserving Edo culture and heritage.
The Oba of Benin remains one of Nigeria's most respected traditional rulers. His Royal Majesty Omo N’Oba N’Edo Uku Akpolokpolo Ewuare II, the current Oba, is a custodian of culture and tradition, as well as a promoter of modern development.
His leadership is a unifying force for the Edo people and an enduring symbol of their identity.
