On the Same Page with George Singleton
George Singleton brings Why Dogs Chase Cars, a series of interwoven short stories, to the Arkansas Educational Television Network. OTSP host Tommy Sanders had the opportunity to speak with Singleton at That Bookstore in Blytheville. Set in the tiny town of Forty-Five, S.C., in the 1970's, Why Dogs Chase Cars tells the story of a precocious Southern boy coming to terms with his father's odd legacy.
Mendall Dawes' mother runs off to Nashville, leaving his jack-of-all-trades father to raise him. He gained a reputation for being "some kind of loner hermit freak at Forty-Five High School" because his father made him read Durkheim and Marx and recite it daily. Among Dawes' friends are Shirley Ebo, "the only black girl pre-integration at Forty-Five Elementary," and Compton Lane, also motherless....

George Singleton - Asides: Occasional Essays | Walter Edgar's Journal Podcast
This week we’ll have a fun conversation with author George Singleton about his new book Asides: Occasional Essays on Dogs, Food, Restaurants, Bars, Hangovers, Jobs, Music, Family Trees, Robbery, Relationships, Being Brought Up Questionably, Et Cetera. It's a collection of fascinating and curious essays, in which Singleton explains how he came to be a writer (he blames barbecue), why he still writes his first draft by hand (someone stole his typewriter), and what motivated him to run marathons (his father gave him beer). In eccentric world-according-to-George fashion, Laugh-In’s Henry Gibson is to blame for Singleton’s literary education, and Aristotle would’ve been a failed philosopher had he grown up in South Carolina.

Mandy Haynes interviews George Singleton
“Interviewing” George is anything but difficult. You don’t interview George, you listen. He is a master story-teller who has the ability to turn day-to-day events into a story, and if you pay attention you’ll get the answers you wanted without asking the questions.
But before we get to the interview, let me introduce him.
George Singleton is the author of nine short story collections, These People Are Us: Stories, The Half-Mammals of Dixie, Why Dogs Chase Cars: Tales of a Beleaguered Boyhood, Drowning in Gruel, Stray Decorum, Between Wrecks, Calloustown, Staff Picks, and You Want More. Two novels, Novel and Work Shirts For Madmen. And one non-fiction that, per George, is a weird book on writing advice he wrote on a dare titled Pep Talks, Warnings, And Screeds: Indispensable Wisdom And Cau...

In eccentric world-according-to-George fashion, Laugh-In’s Henry Gibson is to blame for Singleton’s literary education, and
Aristotle would’ve been a failed philosopher had he grown up in South Carolina.
Join historian Dr. Walter Edgar and co-host Alfred Turner twice a month for conversations with guests about the history and culture of South Carolina and the American South – from the mysteries of okra to the long road to civil rights and much more.

And one non-fiction that, per George, is a weird book on writing advice he wrote on a dare titled Pep Talks, Warnings, And Screeds: Indispensable Wisdom And Cautionary Advice For Writers.
Over two hundred of his stories have appeared in journals such as the Atlantic Monthly, Harper’s, Playboy, Georgia Review, The Southern Review, Cincinnati Review, Tin House, Garden & Gun, and elsewhere. He is the recipient of a Pushcart Prize and a Guggenheim fellowship. In 2013, Singleton accepted the John C. Cobb Endowed Chair in the Humanities at Wofford College where he taught fiction writing and editing. Singleton was inducted into the Fellowship of Southern Writers in April 2015 and awarded the John William Corrington Award for Literary Excellence in 2016.
