George Holt Thomas

George Holt Thomas (31 March 1869 – 1 January 1929) aviation industry pioneer and newspaper proprietor. Holt Thomas founded, in 1911, the business which became Aircraft Manufacturing Company Limited or Airco.

Son and grandson of successful artists he initially followed his father into The Graphic and Daily Graphic newspaper business in 1890, later making his own name and fortune by founding The Bystander and Empire Illustrated magazines. Something of a shrewd visionary he turned to aircraft in 1906.

Background

George Holt Thomas was the seventh son of William Luson Thomas (1830–1890) and his wife Annie, daughter of John Wilson Carmichael. Born at Hampton House, Stockwell, south London, educated privately and at King’s College School, London he left Queen’s College Oxford in 1890 after two years and without taking a degree. In 1894 he married Gertrude daughter of architect Thomas Oliver of Newcastle upon Tyne, there were no children of the marriage.

Newspapers

After he left university in 1890 he joined his father’s newspaper business as a director then became its general manager and later founded The Bystander with its comic strip character "Old Bill" and Empire Illustrated so making his own name and fortune.

George Holt (Medal of Honor)

George Holt (born 1840, year of death unknown) was a United States Navy sailor and a recipient of the United States military's highest decoration, the Medal of Honor.

Born in Louisville, Kentucky in 1840, Holt later joined the Navy from that state. By July 3, 1871, he was serving as a quarter gunner on the USS Plymouth. On that day, while the Plymouth was at the Port of Hamburg, Germany, a small boat approached the ship in a strong current. When the boat capsized, Holt and another sailor, Landsman Paul Tobin, jumped overboard and rescued one of the boat's crewmen. For this action, both he and Tobin were awarded the Medal of Honor a year later, on October 10, 1872.

George Holt (merchant)

George Holt (1825–1896) was a Victorian ship owner and merchant. He lived at Sudley House in Liverpool. He founded the Liverpool Institute High School for Boys, and is the namesake of the University of Liverpool's George Holt building, which currently houses the laboratories of the university's department of materials engineering. He was the son of George Holt, Sr. and Emma Durning. Among his brothers were Alfred Holt, founder of the Blue Funnel lines, and Robert Durning Holt, first Lord Mayor of Liverpool. His only child, Emma Georgina Holt (1862–1944) supported women's higher education and was a noted philanthropist. There is a Halls of Residence at Edge Hill university called Holt in his honour.
