George Gordon (May 2, 1865 – February 3, 1942) was a Canadian politician. He represented the riding of Nipissing in the Canadian House of Commons from 1908 to 1911. He was then appointed to the Senate, where he served until his death in 1942. He was a member of the Conservative Party.
He was born in Pakenham, Canada West (Pakenham, Ontario), the son of Alexander Gordon and Elizabeth Fraser, and was educated in Pembroke. In 1894, he married Alice Emma Perry. Before entering politics, Gordon was a lumber merchant in Sturgeon Falls and was head of several lumber companies. He also served as a director of the Bank of Nova Scotia. Gordon ran unsuccessfully for a seat in the House of Commons in 1904 defated by Liberal C A McCool. Gordon defeated McCool in 1908 and was
reelected to the House of Commons in 1911 but resigned his seat to allow Francis Cochrane to run for election in Nipissing. Gordon died in Toronto at the age of 76.
George Gordon (1829–1907) was a Scottish born engineer who was prominent in Melbourne in the late nineteenth century.
Early life and training
Gordon was the son of Robert Gordon and Margaret Auton. He was born in 1829 at Arbroath, Forfarshire, Scotland, while the family home was Cargield House near the market town of Dumfries. Gordon was educated at the local Academy, and later studied at Bonn and Wiesbaden in Germany, before attending engineering lectures at University College, London, and simultaneously serving as a pupil to J. G. C. Curtis. Once qualified, he was employed on Parliamentary surveys and other work as assistant to consulting engineer, William Buld.
Holland and India
In 1851 he moved to Holland, where he was appointed Assistant Engineer for the Amsterdam Waterworks under Bland W. Croker, and was appointed Chief Engineer himself in 1855. In 1859 he obtained a position as one of the Resident Engineers on the Madras Irrigation and Canal Company's Works, and was propmoted to Deputy Chief Engineer in 1869. In 1871, when these works were approaching completion, Mr. Gordon was appointed Chief Engineer for Water-Supply in Victoria, Australia. As Chief Engineer he continued the works of the Coliban Water-Supply for Bendigo and other towns of the goldfields district.
The Dukedom, named after the Clan Gordon, was first created for the 4th Marquess of Huntly, who on 3 November 1684 was created Duke of Gordon, Marquess of Huntly, Earl of Huntly and Enzie (all three of which he already held by an older creation), Viscount of Inverness, and Lord Strathaven, Balmore, Auchindoun, Garthie and Kincardine. On 2 July 1784, the 4th Duke was created Earl of Norwich, in the County of Norfolk, and Baron Gordon, of Huntley in the County of Gloucester, in the Peerage of Great Britain. The principal family seat was Gordon Castle. The Dukedom became extinct in 1836, along with all the titles created in 1684 and 1784.
GeneralGeorge Duncan Gordon, 5th Duke of GordonGCB, PC (2 February 1770 – 28 May 1836), styled Marquess of Huntly until 1827, was a Scottish nobleman, soldier and politician and the last of his illustrious line.
He was a freemason and was Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Scotland from 1792 to 1794. He was Member of Parliament for Eye from 1806 to 1807. On 11 April 1807, at the age of 37, he was summoned to the House of Lords in one of the minor peerages of his father (Baron Gordon of Huntley, co. Gloucester). He was appointed a Privy Counsellor in 1830, was Keeper of the Great Seal of Scotland from 1828 to 1830 (a post that his father had held until 1827), and from 1827 to 1836 was Governor of Edinburgh Castle.
