A captain in the 4th Battalion Grenadier Guards, Grey was killed at Le Repas in Normandy, France, on the first day of Operation Bluecoat. He was buried on the battlefield by his men, on the site of which his family later erected a memorial. The site is now recognised as a war grave, designated the Livry Isolated Grave.

Charles Frederick GreyCBE (25 March 1903 – 7 September 1984) was a British miner and politician; he was also an independent Methodist Minister.
Grey had an elementary school education and went to work in the Durham coalfield when he left school at 14. He became involved in Labour Party activities, and for many years was on the Executive Committee of the Divisional Labour Party.
At the 1945 general election, Grey was chosen as Labour candidate for Durham. Although centred on the cathedral city, most of the voters lived in nearby mining villages and Grey was elected.
In 1962, Grey was named as the Northern Area whip for the Parliamentary Labour Party. When Labour won the 1964 general election he became a government whip as Comptroller of Her Majesty's Household. He was promoted to Treasurer of Her Majesty's Household in July 1966. In October 1969 he gave up office and announced his retirement.
Out of Parliament, Grey was President of the Independent Methodist Connexion in 1971. He was given the Freedom of the City of Durham in 1971, and was awarded an Honorary degree by the University of Durham in 1976.
Captain Charles Gossage Grey was an American World War Iflying ace credited with five aerial victories. He remained in France after World War I. During World War II, he joined the Office of Strategic Services and served with the French Resistance. He continued in U. S. civil service until his retirement in 1961.
Early Life pre World War I
Charles Gossage Grey was born in Chicago, Illinois, on 20 June 1894, the son of Charles Scott, and later adopted by his stepfather Walter C. Grey. He attended Columbia University School of Journalism, and subsequently was a reporter with the Chicago Evening Post.
World War I
In February 1917 he volunteered his services with the American Ambulance Field Services in France. and in June of that year enlisted into the French Foreign Legion obtaining his military flying license on September 29, 1917. He was then assigned to the Escadrille Spad 93 Lafayette Flying Corps as seargent where he remained until March 1918. Promoted lieutenant, he was then commissioned into U. S. service and assigned to the 213th Pursuit Squadron on 1 August 1918 as Flight Commander of its third flight. Between 2 September and 3 November 1918, he used his Spad XIII to score five aerial victories (ace). He was promoted to captain on 6 November 1918.
Sir George Frederick Lawrence Charles (7 June 1916 – 26 June 2004) is a former trade unionist, politician, founder of the Saint Lucia Labour Party and Chief Minister of Saint Lucia (1 January 1960 – April 1964). He is a recipient of Saint Lucia's second-highest honour, the St. Lucia Cross (1987), and was knighted in 1988 by Queen Elizabeth II. George F. L. Charles Airport, in Castries, Saint Lucia, is named in his honour.
Born on 7 June 1916, George Charles had a privileged education at St. Mary’s College. But like many young West Indians of his time, he migrated to Aruba and worked there for a year with the Largo Oil and Transport Company. In Aruba, he was exposed to trade union activities and on his return to Saint Lucia, in 1945, he championed the cause of the workers at the Vigie Airport - now George F. L. Charles Airport - Renovation Project, where he was employed as a timekeeper. His solidarity on that occasion propelled him to the General Secretaryship of the Saint Lucia Workers Cooperative Union.
