Geography of South Australia
The geography of South Australia incorporates the south central part of the continent of Australia. It is one of the six states of Australia. South Australia is bordered on the west by Western Australia, to the north by the Northern Territory, Queensland to the northeast, and both New South Wales and Victoria to the east. South Australia's south coast is flanked by the Great Australian Bight and the Indian Ocean, although it is referred to locally as the Southern Ocean.
The northern and western parts of the state are extremely arid, in central Australia, dominated by Lake Eyre and Lake Torrens, mostly dry salt lakes. This arid area is sparsely populated, with many large cattle stations, and significant areas protected as national parks, or as Aboriginal lands. The only significant roads through these areas are the Stuart Highway north from Port Augusta to the Northern Territory, the Eyre Highway across the Nullarbor Plain to Western Australia, and the Barrier Highway east to Broken Hill in New South Wales. These highways have corresponding railways: the Trans-Australian Railway going west and east, and the Adelaide–Darwin railway going north.

South Australian wine
The South Australian wine industry is responsible for more than half the production of all Australian wine. South Australia has a vast diversity in geography and climate which allows the state to be able to produce a range of grape varieties-from the cool climate Riesling variety in the Clare Valley wine region to the big, full bodied Shiraz wines of the Barossa Valley.
Some of Australia's best-known wines like Penfolds Grange, Jacob's Creek, Yalumba and Henschke Hill of Grace are produced here, as well as many of Australia's mass-produced box wines.
As with most agriculture in Australia, irrigation is vital to the success of the South Australian wine industry.
History
The earliest recorded evidence of vine planting was in 1836 by a settler named John Barton Hack in Chichester Gardens, North Adelaide.
In 1838 George Stevenson planted a vineyard in Adelaide and may have been producing wine as early as 1841. Following the spread of urban development, Hack's vines were pulled up and replanted in a new vineyard at Echunga Springs near Mount Barker. In 1843, he sent a case of wine made from the vineyard to Queen Victoria, being the first Australian wine to reach the Queen.

Northern Territory
The Northern Territory (abbreviated as NT) is a federal Australian territory in the centre and central northern regions. It shares borders with Western Australia to the west (129th meridian east), South Australia to the south (26th parallel south), and Queensland to the east (138th meridian east). To the north, the territory is bordered by the Timor Sea, the Arafura Sea and the Gulf of Carpentaria. Despite its large area—over 1,349,129 square kilometres (520,902 sq mi), making it the third largest Australian federal division—it is sparsely populated. The Northern Territory's population of 243,700 (2014) makes it is the least populous of Australia's eight major states and territories, having fewer than half as many people as Tasmania.
The archaeological history of the Northern Territory begins over 40,000 years ago when Indigenous Australians settled the region. Makassan traders began trading with the indigenous people of the Northern Territory for trepang from at least the 18th century onwards, and very likely for 300 years prior to that. The coast of the territory was first seen by Europeans in the 17th century. The British were the first Europeans to attempt to settle the coastal regions. After three failed attempts to establish a settlement (1824–1828, 1838–1849, and 1864–66), success was achieved in 1869 with the establishment of a settlement at Port Darwin. Today the economy is based on tourism, especially Kakadu National Park in the Top End and the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park (Ayers Rock) in central Australia, and mining.

Australia (/ɒˈstreɪliə/, /ə-/, colloquially /-jə/), officially known as the Commonwealth of Australia, is an Oceanian country comprising the mainland of the Australian continent, the island of Tasmania, and numerous smaller islands. It is the world's sixth-largest country by total area. Neighbouring countries include Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and East Timor to the north; the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu to the north-east; and New Zealand to the south-east.
For about 50,000 years before the first British settlement in the late 18th century, Australia was inhabited by indigenous Australians, who spoke languages grouped into roughly 250 language groups. After the European discovery of the continent by Dutch explorers in 1606, Australia's eastern half was claimed by Great Britain in 1770 and initially settled through penal transportation to the colony of New South Wales from 26 January 1788. The population grew steadily in subsequent decades; the continent was explored and an additional five self-governing crown colonies were established. On 1 January 1901, the six colonies federated, forming the Commonwealth of Australia. Since federation, Australia has maintained a stable liberal democratic political system that functions as a federal parliamentary democracy and constitutional monarchy comprising six states and several territories. The population of 24 million is highly urbanised and heavily concentrated in the eastern states and on the coast.

Australia (The Kinks song)
"Australia" is a song by the British rock band The Kinks, appearing on their 1969 album, Arthur (Or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire). It was written by the band's main songwriter, Ray Davies.
Lyrics and Music
In the song, the character Derek (who is featured in the story line of Arthur (Or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire)) attempts to convince his father, Arthur, of the great opportunities available in Australia, where there's "no drug addiction" and you can "surf like they do in the U.S.A." Derek's advertisement is compared to John Smith, who campaigned for America in a similar manner, by author Thomas Kitts.
The song also features a jam sequence lasting for approximately half the song, which is atypical for The Kinks. In the Australian single edit, this section is removed by editing an earlier section of the song into another section during a drum beat, which is then followed by a fade-out.
Release
"Australia" was only released in most countries on the Arthur (Or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire) album, where it was the closing track on side one. However, in Australia, a dramatically cut down version of the song was released as a single, with another Arthur (Or the Decline and Fall of the British Empire) track, "She's Bought a Hat Like Princess Marina", on the B-side. However, the single was commercially unsuccessful.

Australia is a Cuban village and consejo popular ("people's council", i.e. hamlet) of the municipality of Jagüey Grande, Matanzas Province. It has an estimated population of 8,850.
History
The village, founded in 1862, is in a sugar growing area and "dominated by the old, out-of-service sugar factory's chimney, with "Australia" written prominently down its length." The village is named after the factory, the Central Australia, which like others in the area were named after continents.
The village was the first sugar town in Cuba to stop using slave labour, and served as Fidel Castro's base of operations during the 1961 Bay of Pigs invasion.
Geography
Located 2 km south of Jagüey Grande, Australia lies next to Zapata Swamp (Ciénaga de Zapata). It is served by the A1 motorway (linking Havana to Santa Clara) at the exit of Jagüey.

'We can’t survive at these prices': South Australian wine region at tipping point
Controversial water buybacks have become a tempting lifeline for a struggling South Australian community. The state’s most prominent wine region in the Riverland has been brought to its knees after years of heartbreak. The buybacks could worsen the situation which is already at a tipping point after a red grape glut. Five years of oversupply and the devastating Chinese trade tariffs have pushed grape prices to an all-time low, with wineries paying growers as little as $150-250 a tonne, but it costs $300 a tonne to produce. “Another one of these seasons and it could be all over for the Riverland," grape grower and harvester Jim Giahgias told Sky News Australia. “Unless there is intervention, unless there is proper strategies, we will all go over – we can’t survive at these prices.”

80 - 89: A barely above average to very good wine displaying various degrees of finesse and flavor as well as character with no noticeable flaws.
70 - 79: An average wine with little distinction except that it is soundly made. In essence, a straightforward, innocuous wine.
60 - 69: A below-average wine containing noticeable deficiencies, such as excessive acidity and/or tannin, an absence of flavor or possibly dirty aromas or flavors.
50 - 59: A wine deemed to be unacceptable.
Australia is one of the more recent additions to the wine world and has grown quickly over the last centuries. When the first European settlers arrived in Oz, there were no wild vines like there like in North America for example. The first vineyards were planted at the end of the 18th century and the industry grew steadily throughout the 19th century. Phylloxera also came to Australia in the 19th century but it did not spread widely and many vineyards and regions are still phylloxera free.
There was a period in the early 20th century when Australia focused on producing Fortified wines. Rutherglen Muscat is one of the remaining wine styles from that time but in the 1950s things changed for the industry. Cold fermentations, the use of stainless steel, the focus on better varietals, and high hygiene levels in the winery improved the quality of Australian wines and made them more reliable also compared to their Old World peers. Today Australia is well-established as a wine-making country. Most of the wine is being produced in the South East of the country, in the states of South Australia and New South Wales as well as Tasmania but you can also find great wines in Western Australia and to a lesser extent in Queensland.
If you think of Australia as hot and dry that’s not entirely true. Most of the wine growing regions are cooled down by the Pacific Ocean. Some areas are also at a higher altitude, like for example Orange a region that sits above 600 meters in Altitude. But Australia can be pretty hot too and by looking at the most widely planted grape varieties you see a mix of cool and warm climate varieties: Shiraz, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sauvignon Blanc
Shiraz or Syrah is the most widely planted variety. While Australians have adopted the spelling Shiraz it is still the same grape variety as Syrah. But it has also developed into a style descriptor. Wines from another country labeled Shiraz are usually richer and more concentrated than Syrahs from the same place. But now let's get into the wines … I have a selection here of classics and some newcomers to the Australian wine scene, so this tasting should be nice.

The state’s most prominent wine region in the Riverland has been brought to its knees after years of heartbreak.
The buybacks could worsen the situation which is already at a tipping point after a red grape glut.
Five years of oversupply and the devastating Chinese trade tariffs have pushed grape prices to an all-time low, with wineries paying growers as little as $150-250 a tonne, but it costs $300 a tonne to produce.
“Another one of these seasons and it could be all over for the Riverland," grape grower and harvester Jim Giahgias told Sky News Australia.
“Unless there is intervention, unless there is proper strategies, we will all go over – we can’t survive at these prices.”

We’ll guide you from Darwin, a city that has been destroyed and rebuilt twice in its short lifetime to the mighty Uluru also known as Ayers Rock, the cultural centre of ancient Australia.
Despite its enormous size, the Northern Territory is the most sparsely populated of all Australian states and territories. Only a couple of hundred thousand people live in an area that covers one and a half million square miles. It’s twice the size of France, and six times the size of the UK.
Most of the territory’s population live in Darwin, where our journey begins. The most northern city of Australia is an important hub of trade, commerce, defence and culture. It also acts as the country’s launching pad to Asia, and is closer to Bali than to Sydney.
The World Heritage listed Kakadu National Park is the largest in Australia, covering twelve and a half thousand square miles nearly half the size of Switzerland. This magnificent land is co-managed between Parks Australia and Aboriginal people, descendants of those who have lived here for more than fifty thousand years. Aborigines here have a deep spiritual connection with the land that dates back to the world’s Creation in their culture.
Kakadu is home to a sublime collection of flora and fauna. Around two thousand types of plant, from coastal mangroves to open woodland and billabongs, hold a fascinating selection of birds and mammals.
Crocodiles are apex predators that have existed since dinosaurs walked the earth, and are greatly respected by the people who live and work here today. Crocodiles stalk their prey from just below the surface of the water, waiting for the perfect time to strike. But despite dominating the rivers and the coast, they attract tourists from all over the world who come to see these magnificent beasts in the wild.
Arnhem Land is the last great Aboriginal reserve, home to around seventeen thousand Aboriginal people living in outstations scattered throughout this overwhelmingly large, remote corner of the Territory. These people live in a blend of European-style Australian life and traditional Aboriginal culture.
Arnhem Land provides a wealth of opportunities to explore the oldest continuing civilisation on Earth. Rock art that dates back to sixty thousand years, traditionally made baskets and indigenous paintings are all part of this rich tapestry of indigenous life in the Northern Territory.
It’s a similar story in the city of Alice Springs. A vibrant oasis of culture, Alice Springs is the gateway to the outback, Australia’s Red Centre. Standing proudly in stark contrast with the bright, sunburned desert, Alice Springs is a green, tranquil home for over twenty thousand people. It seems a strange place to find a city. Pleasant cafes, busy museums and fashionable bars aren’t the usual images conjured by thinking of outback Central Australia, but the Alice is the bustling centre of a huge range of events, festivals, shows, museums and galleries.
But Alice Springs is known as the gateway to the outback for a reason. For tourists and locals alike, Alice Springs is the beginning of the road to some of the most incredible natural wonders in the whole of Australia.
Uluru (Ayers Rock) is a magnificent geological formation is, for many, the symbol of Australia itself. Situated in the heart of Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, Uluru, also known as Ayers Rock, is an area of enormous cultural significance for the local indigenous people.
Uluru is the largest single monolith in the world. This huge sandstone formation is held in high regard by Aboriginal people not just locally but all across Australia. The shapes in the rock have been the subject of Creation stories in Aboriginal culture known as the Dreamtime for thousands of years. Thrilling stories about animals, bad spirits and early Aboriginal people are still told by elders today.
Uluru is a sacred place, the Mecca of Australian Aboriginals. The nearby cultural information centre receives letters from previous visitors people who have taken a stone or a rock from Uluru and then suffered bad fortune in their work or personal lives. These people have then returned the rock to Uluru Kata-Tjuta National Park along with a letter of apology, believing that taking the rock in the first place has been the cause of their misfortune.
Kata Tjuta, or ‘The Olgas’, is a group of thirty six domed sandstone rocks thought to be around five hundred million years old. The mesmerising shapes and ochre colour have captivated locals and travellers for generations. In the local language, Kata Tjuta means “many heads”. The area is still managed by indigenous people today, with Aboriginal guides and rangers working alongside white Australians to preserve the geological and cultural importance of this remarkable place.

The 100 Point Scoring System (from www.robertparker.com):
96-100: An extraordinary wine of profound and complex character displaying all the attributes expected of a classic wine of its variety. Wines of this caliber are worth a special effort to find, purchase and consume.
90 - 95: An outstanding wine of exceptional complexity and character. In short, these are terrific wines.
80 - 89: A barely above average to very good wine displaying various degrees of finesse and flavor as well as character with no noticeable flaws.
70 - 79: An average wine with little distinction except that it is soundly made. In essence, a straightforward, innocuous wine.
60 - 69: A below-average wine containing noticeable deficiencies, such as excessive acidity and/or tannin, an absence of flavor or possibly dirty aromas or flavors.
50 - 59: A wine deemed to be unacceptable.
Australia is one of the more recent additions to the wine world and has grown quickly over the last centuries. When the first European settlers arrived in Oz, there were no wild vines like there like in North America for example. The first vineyards were planted at the end of the 18th century and the industry grew steadily throughout the 19th century. Phylloxera also came to Australia in the 19th century but it did not spread widely and many vineyards and regions are still phylloxera free.
There was a period in the early 20th century when Australia focused on producing Fortified wines. Rutherglen Muscat is one of the remaining wine styles from that time but in the 1950s things changed for the industry. Cold fermentations, the use of stainless steel, the focus on better varietals, and high hygiene levels in the winery improved the quality of Australian wines and made them more reliable also compared to their Old World peers. Today Australia is well-established as a wine-making country. Most of the wine is being produced in the South East of the country, in the states of South Australia and New South Wales as well as Tasmania but you can also find great wines in Western Australia and to a lesser extent in Queensland.
If you think of Australia as hot and dry that’s not entirely true. Most of the wine growing regions are cooled down by the Pacific Ocean. Some areas are also at a higher altitude, like for example Orange a region that sits above 600 meters in Altitude. Shiraz or Syrah is the most widely planted variety. While Australians have adopted the spelling Shiraz it is still the same grape variety as Syrah. But it has also developed into a style descriptor. Wines from another country labeled Shiraz are usually richer and more concentrated than Syrahs from the same place. Controversial water buybacks have become a tempting lifeline for a struggling South Australian community.
The state’s most prominent wine region in the Riverland has been brought to its knees after years of heartbreak.
The buybacks could worsen the situation which is already at a tipping point after a red grape glut.
Five years of oversupply and the devastating Chinese trade tariffs have pushed grape prices to an all-time low, with wineries paying growers as little as $150-250 a tonne, but it costs $300 a tonne to produce.
“Another one of these seasons and it could be all over for the Riverland," grape grower and harvester Jim Giahgias told Sky News Australia.
“Unless there is intervention, unless there is proper strategies, we will all go over – we can’t survive at these prices.”
Geography of South Australia
The geography of South Australia incorporates the south central part of the continent of Australia. It is one of the six states of Australia. South Australia is bordered on the west by Western Australia, to the north by the Northern Territory, Queensland to the northeast, and both New South Wales and Victoria to the east. South Australia's south coast is flanked by the Great Australian Bight and the Indian Ocean, although it is referred to locally as the Southern Ocean.
The northern and western parts of the state are extremely arid, in central Australia, dominated by Lake Eyre and Lake Torrens, mostly dry salt lakes. This arid area is sparsely populated, with many large cattle stations, and significant areas protected as national parks, or as Aboriginal lands. The only significant roads through these areas are the Stuart Highway north from Port Augusta to the Northern Territory, the Eyre Highway across the Nullarbor Plain to Western Australia, and the Barrier Highway east to Broken Hill in New South Wales. These highways have corresponding railways: the Trans-Australian Railway going west and east, and the Adelaide–Darwin railway going north.

We’ll guide you from Darwin, a city that has been destroyed and rebuilt twice in its short lifetime to the mighty Uluru also known as Ayers Rock, the cultural centre of ancient Australia.
Despite its enormous size, the Northern Territory is the most sparsely populated of all Australian states and territories. Only a couple of hundred thousand people live in an area that covers one and a half million square miles. It’s twice the size of France, and six times the size of the UK.
Most of the territory’s population live in Darwin, where our journey begins. The most northern city of Australia is an important hub of trade, commerce, defence and culture. It also acts as the country’s launching pad to Asia, and is closer to Bali than to Sydney.
The World Heritage listed Kakadu National Park is the largest in Australia, covering twelve and a half thousand square miles nearly half the size of Switzerland. This magnificent land is co-managed between Parks Australia and Aboriginal people, descendants of those who have lived here for more than fifty thousand years. Aborigines here have a deep spiritual connection with the land that dates back to the world’s Creation in their culture.
Kakadu is home to a sublime collection of flora and fauna. Around two thousand types of plant, from coastal mangroves to open woodland and billabongs, hold a fascinating selection of birds and mammals.
Crocodiles are apex predators that have existed since dinosaurs walked the earth, and are greatly respected by the people who live and work here today. Crocodiles stalk their prey from just below the surface of the water, waiting for the perfect time to strike. But despite dominating the rivers and the coast, they attract tourists from all over the world who come to see these magnificent beasts in the wild.
Arnhem Land is the last great Aboriginal reserve, home to around seventeen thousand Aboriginal people living in outstations scattered throughout this overwhelmingly large, remote corner of the Territory. These people live in a blend of European-style Australian life and traditional Aboriginal culture.
Arnhem Land provides a wealth of opportunities to explore the oldest continuing civilisation on Earth. Rock art that dates back to sixty thousand years, traditionally made baskets and indigenous paintings are all part of this rich tapestry of indigenous life in the Northern Territory.
It’s a similar story in the city of Alice Springs. A vibrant oasis of culture, Alice Springs is the gateway to the outback, Australia’s Red Centre. Standing proudly in stark contrast with the bright, sunburned desert, Alice Springs is a green, tranquil home for over twenty thousand people. It seems a strange place to find a city. Pleasant cafes, busy museums and fashionable bars aren’t the usual images conjured by thinking of outback Central Australia, but the Alice is the bustling centre of a huge range of events, festivals, shows, museums and galleries.
But Alice Springs is known as the gateway to the outback for a reason. For tourists and locals alike, Alice Springs is the beginning of the road to some of the most incredible natural wonders in the whole of Australia.
Uluru (Ayers Rock) is a magnificent geological formation is, for many, the symbol of Australia itself. Situated in the heart of Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, Uluru, also known as Ayers Rock, is an area of enormous cultural significance for the local indigenous people.
Uluru is the largest single monolith in the world. This huge sandstone formation is held in high regard by Aboriginal people not just locally but all across Australia. The shapes in the rock have been the subject of Creation stories in Aboriginal culture known as the Dreamtime for thousands of years. Thrilling stories about animals, bad spirits and early Aboriginal people are still told by elders today.
Uluru is a sacred place, the Mecca of Australian Aboriginals. The nearby cultural information centre receives letters from previous visitors people who have taken a stone or a rock from Uluru and then suffered bad fortune in their work or personal lives. These people have then returned the rock to Uluru Kata-Tjuta National Park along with a letter of apology, believing that taking the rock in the first place has been the cause of their misfortune.
Kata Tjuta, or ‘The Olgas’, is a group of thirty six domed sandstone rocks thought to be around five hundred million years old. The mesmerising shapes and ochre colour have captivated locals and travellers for generations. In the local language, Kata Tjuta means “many heads”. The area is still managed by indigenous people today, with Aboriginal guides and rangers working alongside white Australians to preserve the geological and cultural importance of this remarkable place.

0:20 - 1:17 - Matt Wright's Top End Safari Camp - We stayed overnight at Top End Safari and experienced outback adventure including helicopter rides, air boat trips and crocodile spotting. Easily accessible from the city it's one of the top things to do in Darwin region.
3:29 - 5:46 - Top Didj Gallery and Cultural Experience - We spent time with Manuel at Top Didj who told us stories from his time growing up in the bush. We also learnt a number of bushcraft skills including fire making and spear throwing.
