Inside the Forgotten War in Darfur, Where the Killing Never Stopped
DARFUR, Sudan — The jagged peaks of the Jebel Marra mountains rise suddenly out of an endless stretch of desert in western Sudan’s Darfur region. Rebel soldiers, many of whom came here to fight against the government nearly 20 years ago, man their posts.
Today civilians here live in relative safety after decades of war, but these mountaintop villages are completely cut off from the rest of Sudanese society. To many, trauma from decades of bombs dropped on them by their own government is compounded by their total isolation.
A team from VICE News are the first outside journalists to access the last rebel stronghold in Jebel Marra in five years. What we found is an area still completely cut off from Sudan and still functionally at war. Nearly a year after a historic revolution toppled Presi...

On December 19, 2018, protests broke out in small cities throughout Sudan amid an economic crisis, eventually reaching the country's capital, Khartoum. These protests posed the biggest challenge to Sudan's longest-serving dictator, Omar al-Bashir, who throughout his regime did everything he could to remain in power. Bashir relied on various security sectors to protect him from being overthrown. However, his plan ultimately failed on April 11, 2019, when the country's army, the Sudanese Armed Forces, and a paramilitary force, the Rapid Support Forces, sided with the protesters and carried out a military coup, toppling Bashir.

In remote Sudan, the Darfur war remains present
The Darfur genocide in Sudan received widespread media coverage across the world and led to the arrest of the country’s former leader, Omar al Bashir. Traveling by car, by donkey, and on foot, Special Correspondent Benedict Moran and video journalist Jorgen Samso visited a rebel stronghold in Darfur’s remote Jebel Marra mountains. There, they found rebels unwilling to put down their guns, and isolated communities for whom the war has never ended.

Conflict in West Darfur: El-Geneina is the 'worst place in the world'
Refugees and aid groups say the fighting in Darfur is less about the battle between the Sudanese armed forces and the Rapid Support Forces than it is an existential war between communities in the region.
Masalit leaders report that militias are targeting their tribe, in particular, and some refugees are describing the persecution in el-Geneina, the capital of West Darfur, as a genocide.
Aid groups worry that the violence could spread across the region and the Masalit warn that other tribes could be targeted next.
Al Jazeera’s Zein Basravi reports from Adre, eastern Chad.

West Darfur governor abducted, killed as war in Sudan spreads
A regional governor has been killed after publicly blaming the deaths of civilians on Sudan’s paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) amid an expansion of the country’s almost two-month-old war into cities in the west of the country,
West Darfur state governor Khamis Abakar was killed on Wednesday, an armed group he commanded said, hours after he accused the RSF and allied fighters of “genocide“.
Details on his death were unavailable but the Reuters news agency reported that two government sources said the RSF was responsible for the killing.
The Sudanese army also took to social media to accuse the RSF of “kidnapping and assassinating” the governor. The killing had added a “new chapter” to the RSF’s “record of barbaric crimes that it has been committing against all the Sudanese people”...

Battle in Sudan's capital risks awakening war in Darfur • FRANCE 24 English
Darfur inhabitants fear battles between Sudan's rival military leaders could reawaken war in the vast and largely desert region already scarred by a two-decade-old conflict. The Darfur conflict originated around 2003-2004, pitting rebels against government forces backed by horse-riding militia known as "Janjaweed" in violence that killed some 300,000 people and uprooted millions from their homes. Despite repeated peace deals, the conflict has simmered ever since, with violence rising in the past two years. FRANCE 24's International Affairs Editor Philip Turle tells us more.

The end of Bashir's regime brought hope to the protesters, but they remained skeptical about the men who had overthrown him. SAF’s Abdel Fattah Burhan and RSF’s Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (aka Hemeti) took control of the country after the coup and made repeated promises to hand over power to civilians, which would put Sudan on a democratic path. But they continuously delayed fulfilling their promises and instead turned against each other, vying for power in Sudan. The two men have brutally interrupted Sudan’s pro-democracy revolution.
The fighting between the two men's forces started out in Sudan's capital, Khartoum, and spread all over the country. Recent ceasefire breakdowns have led to more bursts of violence, especially in Darfur, a region still reeling from the aftermath of a genocide at the hands of Bashir's regime.
Watch the latest episode of Atlas to understand how their feud has undermined the democratic aspirations of the protesters and put Sudan at risk of a civil war.

The killing had added a “new chapter” to the RSF’s “record of barbaric crimes that it has been committing against all the Sudanese people”, the army said on Facebook, calling the incident a “brutal act”.

Despite repeated peace deals, the conflict has simmered ever since, with violence rising in the past two years. FRANCE 24's International Affairs Editor Philip Turle tells us more.

Over 170 Killed in just 2 days as Sudan Civil War Escalates | Vantage with Palki Sharma
Sudan has been in the midst of a civil war for 20 months now. The ruling military junta is fighting a paramilitary group called the Rapid Support Forces, or RSF. On Monday, the army is accused of bombing a busy marketplace, and killing over 100 people, mostly civilians. The RSF responded by shelling the city of Omdurman on Tuesday, and killing 65 people. This includes 22 people who were travelling in a bus. Both sides are ramping up their attacks, and they don't seem to care about how many civilians get caught in the crossfire.

Stories of survival in Sudan | DW Documentary
A journey into a forgotten conflict. Ten million people have been displaced by the civil war in Sudan, more than in any other crisis worldwide.
Of Sudan’s internally displaced persons, a quarter of a million have found refuge in the Nuba Mountains, in the South of the country. The area is difficult to get to.
With so few reports from the region reaching a global audience, DW reporter Mariel Müller traveled there to get first-hand accounts from those affected by the war. As is so often the case, women have suffered the most. Three of them share their stories of survival.

Note: The headline has been updated.

Note: The headline has been updated.
Previous headline: The two men who derailed Sudan’s revolution

THIS IS CRAZY!! Sorry Dutch people, you are not the tallest in the world. Not even close! You guys will not believe how tall the people are in South Sudan! Like EVERYONE on the streets of Juba (South Sudan's capital) is well over 6 feet tall, and many over 7 feet - even the females! It's one of the most unbelievable features of mankind that I've ever seen anywhere on this planet.
If you enjoyed this story, please share it with your friends! South Sudan can benefit from any positive attention as it's gone through rough times like civil war and political unrest.
