General Quarters, Battle Stations, or Action Stations is an announcement made aboard a navalwarship to signal the all hands aboard a ship to battle stations as quickly as possible.
He is owned and trained by 75-year-old Tom McCarthy, a retired high schoolteacher and principal. On May 30, 2008, McCarthy claimed General Quarters, his only horse, for $20,000 out of a maiden race at Churchill Downs.

General Quarters made seven starts as a two-year-old. He won a maidenclaiming race his first time out and was claimed by 75-year-old owner-trainer Tom McCarthy, a retired high school teacher and principal from Louisville, Kentucky. After that, the colt showed limited promise until his last race of 2008 when he earned his best stakes race result with a second-place finish in the Inaugural Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs. Age 3
On February 14, 2009, General Quarters won the Sam F. Davis Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs . At Keeneland Race Course on April 11, the colt won the most important race of his career to date: the Grade I Blue Grass Stakes. His win qualified him for the May 2 Kentucky Derby, the first leg of the U.S. Triple Crown. Ridden by French jockey, Julien Leparoux, he finished tenth.
He was then entered into the Preakness Stakes at Pimlico Downs, again with Leparoux aboard, and finished ninth. Age 4
On May 1, 2010, General Quarters won the Woodford Reserve Turf Classic, beating Court Vision.
General Quarters is a set of naval wargaming rules written by Lonnie Gill. Quick and easy to play they have become one of the most popular series of World War I and World War II era naval rules (they topped the poll of popular wargames rules amongst the Naval Wargames Society. There are currently three versions available. GQ1 covered World War II and used a d6 based system. GQ2 expanded coverage to World War I whilst also introducing new rules for World War II games; it also introduced a revised combat system that used a d10 in addition to d6. GQ3 was a complete revision published in 2006. A revised World War I version was announced for release in September 2007, and published as Fleet Action Imminent .There are a number of campaign supplements for GQ3. First is The Solomons Campaign about the WWII Guadalcanal battles. Next is Sudden Storm a hypothetical campaign dealing with a war, between Japan and the US in 1937. A surprisingly possible occurrence, and one that yields a lot of big gun battles as the US fights its way back across the Pacific to the Philippines. All in a very smooth and playable format.
