Leave Her to Heaven (Femmina folle, 1945) di John M. Stahl
The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (Il fantasma e la signora Muir, 1947 ) di Joseph L. Mankiewicz

► In this video, we look at Gene Tierney's love life, including her most notable lovers and marriages during her Hollywood career.
► Gene Tierney was a famous American actress who starred in many films during the Golden Age of Hollywood. She was born on November 19, 1920, in Brooklyn, New York, to a wealthy family. She was discovered by a director during a family vacation and offered a contract, but her father disapproved of her becoming a Hollywood actress. She later pursued her acting career and became known for her beauty and roles in films such as Laura (1944) and Leave Her to Heaven (1945), for which she received an Oscar nomination.
Tierney had a tumultuous love life that involved several affairs and marriages. Here are some of her most notable lovers.
John F. Kennedy: Tierney met the future president in 1946, when he was a congressman. They had a brief romance that ended when he refused to marry her because of his political ambitions. Tierney was hoping to gain a divorce from her first husband and then marry the dashing young politician, but it was never to be.
Tyrone Power: Tierney had an affair with the bi-sexual actor in 1946, while they were filming "The Razor’s Edge". Power was married at the time and had a reputation for being a womanizer.
Howard Hughes: Tierney had a brief affair with the billionaire, aviator and film producer in 1940s. Hughes was obsessed with Tierney and tried to control her life, but she rejected him. Hughes eventually became a lifelong friend and he paid all medical expenses for her disabled daughter, Daria.
Kirk Douglas: They met after Tierney ended her marriage with Oleg Cassini in 1952, but Tierney broke off the affair with Douglas the minute he told her he was not interested in marriage. Douglas dished about some of Tierney’s odd habits - including insisting that he visit her by climbing into the window of her Hollywood home and mount her when she wasn’t expecting it.
Prince Aly Khan: While filming for "Personal Affair" in Europe, she began a romance with Prince Aly Khan. They became engaged in 1952, while Khan was going through a divorce from Rita Hayworth. Their marriage plans, however, met with fierce opposition from his father, Aga Khan III.
Tierney married twice in her life. Her first husband was Oleg Cassini, a fashion designer, whom she married in 1941 and divorced in 1952. They had two daughters, one of whom, Daria, was born deaf and mentally disabled due to Tierney’s exposure to rubella during her pregnancy.
Her second husband was William Howard Lee, an oil tycoon, whom she married in 1960 and remained with until his death in 1981. Howard Lee was previously married to actress Hedy Lamarr. Lee and Lamarr divorced in 1960 after a long battle over alimony.
Tierney suffered from mental health issues throughout her life and was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. She underwent several treatments, including electroshock therapy, which affected her memory. She died on November 6, 1991, at the age of 70.
Gene Tierney’s love life was full of passion and drama, but also of pain and tragedy. She was one of the most glamorous and talented stars of her era, but also one of the most unfortunate ones.

Gene Eliza Tierney (November 19, 1920 - November 6, 1991) was an American film and stage actress. Acclaimed for her great beauty, she became established as a leading lady. Tierney was best known for her portrayal of the title character in the film Laura (1944), and was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actress for her performance as Ellen Berent Harland in Leave Her to Heaven (1945).
Tierney's other roles include Martha Strable Van Cleve in Heaven Can Wait (1943), Isabel Bradley Maturin in The Razor's Edge (1946), Lucy Muir in The Ghost and Mrs. Muir (1947), Ann Sutton in Whirlpool (1949), Mary Bristol in Night and the City (1950), Maggie Carleton McNulty in The Mating Season (1950), and Anne Scott in The Left Hand of God (1955).
Tierney was married twice. Her first husband was Oleg Cassini, a costume and fashion designer. She was 20 years old. Her parents opposed the marriage because he was from a Russian-Italian family and born in France. They had two daughters, Antoinette Daria and Christina.
In 1943, while pregnant with Daria, Tierney contracted rubella, likely from a fan ill with the disease. Antoinette Daria was born prematurely in Washington, DC, weighing three pounds two ounces (1.4 kg) and requiring a total blood transfusion. The rubella caused congenital damage: Daria was deaf, partially blind with cataracts, and severely mentally disabled. She was institutionalized for much of her life. This entire incident was inspiration for a plot point in the 1962 Agatha Christie novel The Mirror Crack'd from Side to Side. Tierney's friend Howard Hughes paid for Daria's medical expenses, ensuring the girl received the best care. Daria Cassini died in 2010, at the age of 66. Her younger daughter, Christina, also died at the age of 66 of ovarian cancer.
Tierney and Cassini separated October 20, 1946, and entered into a property settlement agreement on November 10. They later divorced in 1952. In 1958, she met Texas oil baron W. Howard Lee, who had been married to actress Hedy Lamarr since 1953. Lee and Tierney married in Aspen, Colorado, in 1960. They lived quietly in Houston, Texas, and Delray Beach, Florida until his death in 1981.
Tierney's autobiography, Self-Portrait, in which she candidly discusses her life, career, and mental illness, was published in 1979.
She died of emphysema on November 6, 1991, in Houston, 13 days before her 71st birthday.
