Should Gene Haas sell his F1 team to Michael Andretti? When we asked our YouTube audience that question after Haas decided to split with team boss Guenther Steiner, the answer was a resounding YES.
Glenn Freeman and Scott Mitchell-Malm get together to discuss those results, and look into why Haas appears reluctant to sell but also reluctant to invest to make his Ferrari-linked team more competitive in F1 during 2024 and beyond.

Guenther Steiner’s bombshell Haas F1 exit explained
One of F1’s most popular and longest-serving team bosses, Guenther Steiner, has left his role in charge of Haas. It’s a shock move that poses serious questions about the team’s prospects and future.
It’s almost unthinkable to imagine Haas without Steiner, as while the team bears the name of its owner Gene Haas, this was really Steiner F1 in all but name.
Steiner was the man who made F1’s strangest team set-up possible and became an unexpected star of the Netflix Drive to Survive series.
Steiner’s departure, with former director of engineering Ayao Komatsu taking over as team principal, has surprised almost everybody in F1. The masterplan to fix 'embarrassed' Haas F1 post-Steiner
New Haas F1 team principal Ayao Komatsu has a huge task on his hands.
Not only must he fill the shoes of larger-than-life predecessor Guenther Steiner, but he must also haul Haas off the bottom of the constructors’ championship – and fast.
Komatsu only found out he was taking over as team boss when owner Gene Haas gave him the good news at the end of last year. He says his priority is to give his team “the environment and framework so they can show their best”.
He’s revealed the first details of his masterplan for achieving that. And first on the agenda is to stress that he is absolutely not trying to be Guenther Steiner.

Gene Haas Dishes Out Harsh Reality About Mick Schumacher
Haas started off by assessing Mick Schumacher
“I think Mick has got a lot of potential, but you know he costs a fortune and he’s wrecked a lot of cars that have cost us a lot of money that we just don’t have”
He then revealed the condition under which a driver crashing is justifiable
“Now, if you bring us some points, and you are [Max] Verstappen [winning races] and you wreck cars, we’ll deal with it”
“But when you are in the back and you wreck cars, that’s very difficult”
He then spoke about Mick’s future
“If he wins the next [race] he’s in [for 2023]. Somewhere in between, there is a grey area”
He signed off by speaking about what the team needs to do
“We started off the year with resounding success [including fifth for Magnussen in Bahrain] and I think the middle season wasn’t too good, and we just seem to fall back into our usual way of running”
“We’ve got to get out of that, but Formula 1 is so tough”
Mick, meanwhile, responded to Gene's comments
"Gene is my boss. Gene has every right to make his comments. It's nothing that wasn't known before"
"That's something that's clear and what the case was. Therefore: accepted. Of course, our goal is to collect points"

McLaren’s Daniel Ricciardo stated “I know it’s a risk, I want a bit more of a sure thing” [The Race]
“I don’t want to risk just putting myself in a position where I’m going to just be at the back and be like, ‘what am I still doing here?’”
“I don’t want to resent the sport in a way. I kind of love it too much”
Ferrari’s Carlos Sainz suggested that “you’re only as good as your last race unfortunately in this sport” [Autosport]
“If that gets amplified to a season, then you’re only as good as your last season, and that’s why Daniel is in such a difficult situation”
“He found himself in a car and at a team that maybe he didn’t find himself comfortable at, and that’s enough for your career to start going through a different path”
Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko pointed out that “Yuki [Tsunoda] is young and does not have the background and experience that Nyck [de Vries] has” [Motorsport]
“We will see how it goes next year, but looking at his experience and his personality, then De Vries has to become the team leader of AlphaTauri”
Audi Formula Racing’s CEO Adam Baker feels that “it is not unreasonable to think [they] can reach the top within three years” [Marca]
“It would be great to have Sainz, but 2026 is still a long way off”
“The full development phase of a new project is very important. Having an experienced driver will be essential in that”
McLaren’s Lando Norris explained that “personally as a driver, sometimes it hurts that you feel like you can do such a good job and you just get a little bit stuck at times”
“You don’t feel like you’re getting rewarded that well for what you’re achieving or what you’re putting in”
“But I think that’s just Formula 1. That’s just what happens”

BUT there has been discontent bubbling away for some time now, and the situation had been coming to a head behind the scenes. Now, Steiner’s gone, and technical director Simone Resta is understood to be out as well.
There were frustrations with the way that Haas was run from the very top, and that means eponymous team owner Gene Haas, who has seemingly become apathetic towards his own F1 team and refused to invest in it.
Steiner and Haas disagreed on the team’s potential in its current form. While Steiner felt Haas needed steady investment over the next few years, as it had outgrown its unique multi-location, Ferrari-dependent model, Gene Haas believes the team has underachieved and does not need more resources or improved facilities to perform better.
