A garrote or garrote vil (a Spanish word; alternative spellings include garotte and garrotte) is a weapon, most often referring to a handheld ligature of chain, rope, scarf, wire or fishing line used to strangle a person.
Assassination weapon
A garrote can be made out of many different materials, including ropes, cable ties, fishing lines, nylon, guitar strings, telephone cord or piano wire.
A stick may be used to tighten the garrote; the Spanish word actually refers to the stick itself, so it is a pars pro toto where the eponymous component may actually be absent. In Spanish, the term may also refer to a rope and stick used to constrict a limb as a torture device.
Since World War II, the garrote has been regularly employed as a weapon by soldiers as a silent means of eliminating sentries and other enemy personnel. Instruction in the use of purpose-built and improvised garrottes is included in the training of many elite military units and special forces. A typical military garrote consists of two wooden handles attached to a length of flexible wire; the wire is looped over a sentry's head and pulled taut in one motion. Soldiers of the French Foreign Legion have used a particular type of double-loop garrote (referred to as la loupe), where a double coil of rope or cord is dropped around a victim's neck and then pulled taut. Even if the victim pulls on one of the coils, he only succeeds in tightening the other.

The Garrote - History's Most BRUTAL Execution Method?
Throughout History there have been many different execution methods used to take the lives of prisoners. The French even invented the Guillotine to kill as many criminals as quickly as possible, but there was one weapon which was considered primitive which was used to take lives. The Garrote in its most simple form is a piece of wire that was used to strangle someone, and it was used during the First World War, Second World War and other conflicts to silence an enemy. But the Garrote was used as an execution method and in front of large crowds, a condemned person would be strangled to death. It was the Spanish who became infamous for their use of the execution method, but there were also Garrote devices and machines used.
With these machines, a victim would be secured to it with chains an...

When the handle was turned it would kill a prisoner, but other devices were used to strangle and perform executions. The Garrote was an execution method which was used in Spain up until the 1970s, and it was rather brutal and bloody. It was also used by many different countries around the world.

i looked on imdb and its a mini series in 1984 called Proceso a Mariana Pineda and the actress is called Marisol. The lady tells me that she was convicted of treason in Spain in the 19th century and executed on the garotte.
As for why she is so calm. Well the garotte used on her was actually not like the one shown in the movie which is a more modern version. The modern version (used in Spain until the late 1970s) caused a screw to drive into the back of the neck of the victim severing the spine and causing a fairly quick death. The type of garotte used on poor Maria was a collar garotte that means that the collar around ner neck was tightened as the screw turned and she was strangled. The speed with which this happened depended on the executioner. The time taken to kill someone varied between about two minutes to ten minutes. People sentenced to die in this way were often very cooperative in the hope that the executioner would kill them quickly and not slowly.
Joan of Arc walked calmly to the stake as did many other women who were burned for their crimes. The reason for this was almost certainly that they knew that a burning might kill them within a few minutes or it might take over an hour. I guess they were very anxious to try not to upset the man who had control of how long they would suffer for before death.
if anyone knows any joan of Arc movies you could post there names here so that this nice lady can use them in her studies.
