What Happened To The Bastille Railway Line?
Behind the Opéra Bastille in Paris you'll find a 1.3km disused old railway viaduct - the "Viaduc des Arts" - now home to chic cafés, art shops, and an elevated tree-lined walkway. But what about the railway that used to run on it? Where did it go to? And what happened to it? I went to investigate the story of the lost line to Bastille...

Last steam hauled commuter trains on Paris-Bastille to Boissy -St-Leger line. This line is now a "Planted Promenade" (footpath) inside Paris, and part of the A line of the RER (Regional Express Network) outside Paris. Paris-Reuilly station was the first station for trains coming from Paris-Bastille.

The Place de la Bastille is a square in Paris where the Bastille prison stood until the storming of the Bastille and its subsequent physical destruction between 14 July 1789 and 14 July 1790 during the French Revolution. No vestige of the prison remains.
The square straddles 3 arrondissements of Paris, namely the 4th, 11th and 12th. The square and its surrounding areas are normally called simply Bastille.
July Column
The July Column (Colonne de Juillet) which commemorates the events of the July Revolution (1830) stands at the center of the square. Other notable features include the Bastille Opera, the Bastille subway station and a section of the Canal Saint Martin. Prior to 1984, the former Bastille railway station stood where the opera house now stands.
The square is home to concerts and similar events. The north-eastern area of Bastille is busy at night with its many cafés, bars, night clubs, and concert halls.
As a consequence of its historical significance, the square is often the site or point of departure of political demonstrations, including the massive anti-CPE demonstration of 28 March 2006.

You can't skip Bastille if you go to Paris. The very name of the place just says 'France'. And this is where the France of today started. Right? The French Revolution?
Oh.... wait. _which_ French Revolution? Bastille was the hotbed for two of France's three revolutions.
But enough history! Here, you'll find some of my favorite places in and around Bastille.
Whatever you might have heard about the place, it's changed. A lot. And you might be surprised at what awaits you in Bastille these days.
And.... (because history is embedded in Bastille), I'm also going to introduce you to Bastille's elephant. A very, very cool pachyderm, that. One you really should meet!
So, if you're thinking about where you should go in Paris, and what you should see, and what is the prettiest café in Bastille (and the purriest), add this video to your watchlist.
If you enjoy it, find it entertaining -- Please subscribe! And, write me a comment to say what you liked (or what I could have done better). I do appreciate those.
