Making a Serene Waterfalls Mini Ecosystem Lake (Feeder Goldfish Sanctuary)
Several years ago, I began planning to build a large pond for my goldfish. more specifically, something I could swim in with them. Various circumstances pushed the project back. However, late last year I began planning for it once again and I'm happen to finally share it with you.
I couldn't have done this along, though. Thanks to @EdThePondProfessor @TEAMAquascape @AquaticEdge and many other for helping me bring this dream to fruition. Enjoy!

DIY Backyard Garden Pond
This video shows how i built a natural looking fish pond in my backyard for native fish. It has a DIY skimmer, biological filter and stream. The fish are Southern pygmy perch and Murray river rainbow fish. These fish are native to South-East Australia.
I was quoted between 10 and 16 thousand dollars. I couldn't afford that so i built it myself for just over $2000. This is Australian dollars, everything is a little more expensive here.

Geo textile underlayment- https://amzn.to/3jBoG1U (X2 if you want to sandwich the liner between to layers).
Firestone EPDM Rubber liner- https://amzn.to/3yQUrIR
Used Olive barrel for the Bog filter- https://mgplastics.com.au/plastic-barrels-olive-drums/ (this is an Australian company but you'll find these types of containers second hand anywhere in the world.)
Helpful video showing how the bog filter is constructed- https://youtu.be/zvoOCq3gcTc
Uniseals to create watertight holes in the barrel. You need 2 one for the clean out and one for the overflow. - https://amzn.to/2WOtdp7
2" PVC pipe for overflow and clean out- https://amzn.to/2Vfhuzc
2" PVC Ball valve for clean out.- https://amzn.to/2Yo8sB9
2" PVC 90 degree elbow- https://amzn.to/3zJzS21 (attach to the overflow so water in directed down instead of jetting out into the stream. You might also like to get another to help lift water off the very bottom on the clean out pipe.)
PVC Glue- https://amzn.to/3Bz38Jt
Flexible 1 1/4" PVC pipe. - https://amzn.to/3mXPZFD ( To move water from the pump to the filter) 25ft should be enough but it will depend on where you position the skimmer in relation to the bog filter.
1 1/4" PVC 90 degree Elbow X 2- https://amzn.to/3jFpR0r To help connect pump to the flex pvc and filter barrel.
1 1/4" PVC pipe rigid- https://amzn.to/3teHDe6 (this is cut to the length required of the barrel. This is the pipe that runs from top to bottom inside the bog filter barrel)
1 1/4" PVC t piece fittings- https://amzn.to/2WOxeKd (To help disperse the water at the base of the filter.)
Bucket to create skimmer- https://amzn.to/3BI3bmp (Doest matter what type of bucket or container as long as it can fit the pump you choose)
Submersible pond pump Low volt DC- https://amzn.to/3yKtTbY (This is a different pump to what i used in this pond, however i used 4 of these pumps on my dream pond build and have been really happy) The transformers need to be kept indoors or protected from weather. They can easily be extended if need be. This video will help if you need to extend the low volt DC cable- https://youtu.be/qn0H6m3aj6k. If you wish to find another alternative anything that delivers around 1000- 1200 gallons per hour will work fine.
Matala filter mat- https://amzn.to/3mXVEeR (Cut to size to sit over the pump in the bucket)
Waterfall foam- https://amzn.to/3BBp46D (To seal cracks and crevices when creating the stream. Can also be used to seal gaps in the rocks used to create the skimmer)
Pond flocculent- https://amzn.to/2WOBSYF (To clear up muddy or cloudy water)
Beneficial bacteria- https://amzn.to/3mXXOet (Beneficial bacteria to kick start the ecosystem)
I think that's it for all the plumbing, pumps , underlayment and liner. Now you just need the rocks and gravel. I also have a downloadable pdf that includes the formulas I use when building an ecosystem pond- https://ozponds.com/pond-equipment/

In this video i show you how i turned a water pit into an all natural pond without pond liner. This pond requires very low maintenance but some local conditions have to be met for it to function. Thank you for watching, feel free to subscribe or comment if you have questions.
transcript: hi there, I'm Carl the landscape guy and today I want to show you how I converted this back yard water pit into a 3000 square foot all natural pond. Now in a pond you want to try to keep the water level as constant as possible. The water level in this pit was fluctuating by about 2 to 3 feet depending on the weather. Rainwater would fill it up, especially during the winter months and during a hot summer there wasn't much water left in there. This situation was really unsightly especially since the main line of sight in this back yard is right on the water pit. In order to minimize the water level fluctuation, I started by connecting the pit to the closest rain water ditch. For that i used about 250 feet of pvc drainage piping, 6 inches in diameter. The pipes were installed on a slope that way the water from the ditch would flow into the pit. I chose only a small slope for the piping so that if the pond is filled up, water can flow backwards into the ditch not overflowing the pond. In addition to that, I connected the rain gutters of the house to the pipe to use existing water as efficient as possible. After these preliminary works I started cutting off all the grass, bushes and little trees about 15 feet around the edges of the pit. Now I could start re-modeling the new pond edges. Since no pond liner is used and all water in the pond will be rain or ground water there will still be small water level fluctuations. That's why I took away the sloping terrain and created a steeper edge. With this relatively steep edge even if the water level fluctuates the water surface will stay about the same. With this 2 ton excavator it took me one day to finish the pond edges. The pond has a depth of about 6 feet. An all natural non liner pond only works on sites with fine soil like clay or loam which has a low co-efficiency of permeability or it also works if you have a high ground water level. Natural wells or brooks around a backyard make a perfect supply for natural ponds. Now it's time to flatten the soil around the pond and plant the first water plants. If you don't want to spend money on water plants you can go to local lakes or rivers to get regional plants you like. If you do so don't destroy natural wildlife habitat. Take only small plant offshoots, they will spread in their new habitat. If you want to put fish in your natural pond that's ok but wait until plants have grown and don't put too many fish in. Since it's a natural pond I didn't add any pumps and filters and I put in about 10 fish. If you feed the fish keep in mind that all nutrients put into the water will have to be clarified by the pond itself. If you add too many nutrients, algae will grow and the fish might suffer. I decided to add a few Stones and one bigger tree stump from the woods with moss on it. This use of regional materials helps to create an all natural character of the pond and improves its appearance. It helps to add only one or two eye catchers, otherwise your eye doesn't know where to look and it doesn't have the effect of creating a harmonic atmosphere . With this pond we look at a low maintenance level. Each fall I cut the grass and plants around the edges and that's about it. I hope this video was informative and helpful for you. If so I would appreciate a "thumbs up". Feel free to subscribe for more videos on ponds, brooks, waterfalls and other garden stuff. Thanks for watching, I'm Carl the landscape guy, good luck with your project and see you next time.

Hello and welcome, I’m Carl the landscape guy and today I’m building a natural looking garden stream for a customer and I will show you every step in detail. I am really looking forward to this project and I think that it is very possible to replicate it with the help of this video. Thank you to all my viewers for the many likes, comments and subscriptions lately, that helps a lot and enables me to produce new videos for you. Today we are in a fairly small yard and therefore I have planned a 3 meter long stream. The size of the stream can be easily changed depending on how much space you have for the construction. First I cut a square that’s about 70 by 70 centimeters and then remove the turf. Then I dig the square out to about 70 centimeters deep. I am reusing the soil to make a small hill for our stream, because we’ll need a slope for proper water flow. It is important to well-compact the soil layer by layer from the beginning by treading on it, so the stream won’t sag later. By the way, you can find my tools and equipment in the description section, so please use the links to order what you need. I'm creating a slight slope around the edges here now. I form the hill a little elongated, which will fit the stream better. Now the ground is getting sandier, but that's good because sand can be compacted better. Right away I remove things like garbage, stones or even broken glass like this here; because we do not want to risk damaging the pond liner later on. Now I add a few wheelbarrows of soil, which is available to me on this construction site. This makes our hill a bit larger, but it is not entirely necessary. Maybe you have some soil or sand lying around that you can use. Or you might already have a natural slope in the garden, where the stream can be built in nicely. You can see here that I have already decreased the slope going towards the hole. And I use this tamper to compact the soil one more time. Now you’ve probably already asked yourself, what goes into the hole. And I’m going to get that ready right now. It is a percolation cube or also called a aqua block, which needs to be assembled. But assembling it is very fast and easy with these little pins. One side will remain open for now and you’ll find out why a little later. The percolation cube should be installed level, so I use a spirit level to pull the soil flat. The cube size is 60 by 60 by 60 centimeters and the hole is about 70 centimeters deep, so that the cube will sit a little lower in the hole. This way the water will run in better and it is easier to cover with rocks later. Next I lay out a thick protective fabric, that weighs 300 grams per square meter. After that comes the pond liner. Both the fabric and the liner are 2 meters wide by 5 meters long. And it just fits with the 60 centimeter cube. I also wrapped the cube in fabric, so it can't damage the liner. Now we move on to the streambed. I form the lowest dam with the help of a garden curbstone.
