Julie Hsieh’s Solo Exhibition in Tokyo at Gallery Field “Heartbeat of Life” March 2020
"Heartbeat of Life" is Julie Hsieh's first solo exhibition in collaboration with Tokyo Gallery Field. In her signature black and red works, the dark black paint divides the strong red paint, reminiscent of the stretching of eyelids or the opening and closing of the ventricle. In her Dahlia series, the flowing and blending of paint not only reflects the transient changes of life, but also implicitly asks the meaning of existence.
About Julie Hsieh: Julie Hsieh is a Taiwanese-American artist. Throughout her life, she immersed herself in various forms of art and creativity, from the art of vocal performance, to the art of medicine, and finally to visual arts. Touted as ‘the modern #Renaissance man’ by 2008 Milan Arts Festival, Gao paints solely with ink - a medium said to be close to the heart and imbued with the spirit of the painter. The presence of large empty spaces on his painting canvas or paper gives rise to a spiritual quality that is hard to miss; coupled with ink of different intensities, he brilliantly introduces a spectrum of light, shade and shadow. These three elements bring forth an amorphous realm, known as the “innervision”, that stands at the crossroads of figurative, abstraction, not bounded by the passage of time. “Painting starts where language fails,” while we may all be looking at the same piece of work, what is comprehensible is largely solitary and personal. The intimate experience of gazing at his inner vision is essentially a glimpse into our own inner vision. In the words of the artist, “The image is in you and you are in the painting.”

As the venerated artist Gao Xingjian (b. 1940) reaches the age of 83 in January 2023, he received the highly decorated Commander of the Legion of Honour (Le Commandeur de la Légion d'Honneur) from French president Emmanuel Macron on January 27 in Élysée Palace. Internationally acclaimed artist and Nobel laureate (2000) Gao Xingjian is a novelist, playwright, poet, theatre and film director, painter, photographer and philosopher. iPreciation is honoured to present 28 important ink-on-paper paintings by Gao, of which 17 are new pieces of works created between 2020 - 2022. This exhibition celebrates this recent award and Gao’s lifetime achievements.
These recent works are markedly different from his monumental and large-scale ink paintings on brilliant white Western canvas. Prevented by pandemic restrictions from going to his studio, he began to work within the confines of his home, turning to use the more manageable Chinese xuan paper. Consequently, the paintings are smaller, subtle and intimate.
Born in Ganzhou, Jiangxi Province, China in 1940, Gao moved to Paris in 1987 and became a French citizen in 1997. Touted as ‘the modern Renaissance man’ by the 2008 Milan Arts Festival, Gao paints solely and only with ink, an ancient medium said to be imbued with the spirit of the painter. Despite his departure from the western medium in the 1970s, traces of oil painting techniques such as layering several different inks still linger in his works.
Gao focuses on the intuitive depictions of his mindscape and inner vision. In the words of the artist - "painting begins where language fails" - while we may all be looking at the same piece of work, what is comprehensible is mainly solitary and personal.

"Heartbeat of Life" is Julie Hsieh's first solo exhibition in collaboration with Tokyo Gallery Field.
Her vocal performance spanned two decades with performances across Taiwan, the United States, and on television. Her singing is emotive and powerful, with listeners positively affected by her rich mezzo-soprano voice. She likens visual art to her performances as they are both mediums through which she expresses herself to others, providing a window to her inspirations, feelings, and the culmination of her diverse experiences.
Although Julie's first career was in medicine as a family physician—receiving a Bachelor of Arts from Stanford University and a medical doctorate from Baylor College of Medicine—creative arts has always played a significant role in her identity. After residing in the United States for 30 years, she moved back to her hometown of Taipei, Taiwan in 2014 to pursue her creative arts full-time.
Julie’s artwork is largely abstract, inspired by her diverse backgrounds in music and medicine, as well as Mother Nature and the environment. She pursues freedom while creating, engaging in a dialogue with her art, a mutual feedback until the final form is realized. She uses multiple mediums such as acrylic, oil, pastels, charcoal, watercolor and ink, not limiting herself to just one medium. For her, art is an escape from the routine, sameness and predictability.
