Bologna is often touted to be the food capital of Italy. But we found Modena, Bologna's lesser known and smaller neighbor, to be the real food capital. After all, the world's best restaurant (Osteria Francescana) and the world's best chef (Massimo Bottura) are based in Modena, and this is where tortellini were invented and where parmesan cheese and aceto balsamico are carefully curated.
Modena is a small, charming and tranquil city in the heart of Italy's Emilia-Romagna region. We recently spent a month living here - exploring, discovering and indulging in the irresistible local cuisine.
We visited a local dairy to see how parmesan cheese is made, we learned how to make tortellini from scratch AND we discovered a surprising tradition around Modena’s liquid gold “aceto balsamico” . We al...

Exploring Modena, Italy - city of the flâneur (4K)
A three-day visit to Modena in the north of Italy where I lived for a period of time at the beginning of the millennium. Modena is one of the great food cities of the world, famous for its Balsamic Vinegar but also known as the home of Ferrari, Lambourghini, and Ducati. It is sometimes called The Mink City as it was the wealthiest city in Italy. Its Duomo, the Cathedral of San Geminiano, and the Ghirlandina tower are UNESCO world heritage sites.
Includes readings from my unpublished book about my time living in Modena - The Mink City Journals, and The Cadogan Guide to Bologna & Emilia-Romagna.
Dinner was at La Smorfia and Osteria Ruggera

Miasto Pavarottiego, Lamborghini, Ferrari i Maserati MODENA / WŁOCHY
Same znane nazwiska Luciano Pavarotti, Enzo Ferriari, Mirella Freni czy rancesco Guccini. Do tego siedziby koncernów Lamborghini, Ferrari, De Tomaso czy Maserati. Mimo to miasto nie jest ośrodkiem turystycznym. To wszystko jednak zaciekawiło mnie i zaprosiło do zwiedzania.

If you are planning to visit Modena city, in Emilia-Romagna - Italy, here you’ll find the best tips on things to do in the town, with a sightseeing map on the most relevant points of interest to enjoy, so you can easily imagine and organize your trip: WHAT to see, HOW to plan your visit, and WHY to discover Modena.
In this video:
- WHAT are the major attractions that you can't go home without having seen, including Piazza Grande, Modena’s Cathedral, the Ghirlandina tower, Palazzo Comunale, Parmigiano Reggiano and vinegar factories.
- Then, I’ll describe to you HOW to follow a daily-tour to better visit the city, with a clear map of Modena town and tips for nearby attractions.
- Finally, we’ll discover WHY to visit Modena city, with his rich historic city center.
Modena is a city of art, automobiles, fine food and much more in the heart of the Emilia Romagna Region.
Modena has so many architectural treasures which are Unesco World Heritage Sites, but is also Italy's cars capital. Between tradition and innovation, here you can be enchanted by the mystical beauty of the Cathedral, and fascinated by cars such as Ferrari and Maserati.
Modena’s World Heritage Sites include the Ghirlandina Tower, Piazza Grande, and Modena’s Cathedral, one of the best examples of Romanesque style in the world.
In 1099 the first stone of the city’s cathedral was laid, and still today this building amaze us for its extraordinary beauty and originality.
Piazza Grande has always been where local government and religious power was managed.
Alongside the cathedral, there is the Ghirlandina belltower, the symbol of the city of Modena, almost ninety meters high.
Modena’s Palazzo Comunale is made up of a seventeenth century unit composed of a series of buildings erected for different purposes in medieval times.
And don’t forget that Modena is a paradise of food and wine!
FOOD TIPS:
- Uva D'Oro, Piazza Giuseppe Mazzini, 37-38
- Ermes, Via Ganaceto, 89
AROUND MODENA:
Visit a cheese factory to discover the way Parmigiano-Reggiano is actually made. Learn how to recognize balsamic vinegar prepared as tradition demands or let yourself be intrigued by a tasting of local wines.
Visit splendid medieval towns, castles, and historic homes for an experience of timeless charm.

We also found a new favorite snack, the gnocco fritto.
Guided tour of parmesan cheese making at 4Maddone: https://www.caseificio4madonne.it/en/guided-tours/our-guided-tours
Guided tour and tasting of balsamic vinegar at Acetaia Giusti:
https://giusti.it/en/visit/
So come along and let us show you around Modena’s delectable food scene.

About Us
We’re Emre and Maia. Our videos feature local, authentic, and immersive experiences in Europe. We love to engage with people in their own language, while we spend a gap year being curious about everything! We’re passionate about travel and food and have been to 44 countries with five passports between us! Now we’re in Southern Europe — Italy, France, and Spain — where we dedicate a month to each stay. Longing for simplicity and freedom, we put our remaining possessions in storage, and set out with one suitcase and one carry-on each. Our slow travel mindset works whether you have a few days or a whole year.

Same znane nazwiska Luciano Pavarotti, Enzo Ferriari, Mirella Freni czy rancesco Guccini. Do tego siedziby koncernów Lamborghini, Ferrari, De Tomaso czy Maserati. Mimo to miasto nie jest ośrodkiem turystycznym. To wszystko jednak zaciekawiło mnie i zaprosiło do zwiedzania.
