In the essay "The Fallacy of Success," G.K. Chesterton critiques the genre of self-help books and articles that promise to teach readers how to achieve success. He argues that these works are nonsensical and misleading, as they offer vague and impractical advice without any real substance. Chesterton contends that true success cannot be taught through such books, and that the concept of success itself is often misunderstood. He emphasizes that success in any field comes either from doing good work or from cheating, and he criticizes the obsession with material wealth and social status. Chesterton also mocks the mystical reverence given to successful figures like Vanderbilt and Rothschild, sug...

Chesterton also mocks the mystical reverence given to successful figures like Vanderbilt and Rothschild, suggesting that such admiration is misplaced and often based on ignorance. Ultimately, he calls for a rejection of these superficial success manuals in favor of more meaningful pursuits.

He has been referred to as the "prince of paradox". Time magazine observed of his writing style: "Whenever possible Chesterton made his points with popular sayings, proverbs, allegories—first carefully turning them inside out."
Chesterton created the fictional priest-detective Father Brown and wrote on apologetics. Even some of those who disagree with him have recognized the wide appeal of such works as Orthodoxy and The Everlasting Man. Chesterton routinely referred to himself as an "orthodox" Christian, and came to identify this position more and more with Catholicism, eventually converting to Catholicism from High Church Anglicanism. Biographers have identified him as a successor to such Victorian authors as Matthew Arnold, Thomas Carlyle, Cardinal John Henry Newman, and John Ruskin. On his contributions, T. S. Eliot wrote:
"He was importantly and consistently on the side of the angels. Behind the Johnsonian fancy-dress, so reassuring to the British public, he concealed the most serious and revolutionary designs—concealing them by exposure ... Chesterton's social and economic ideas...were fundamentally Christian and Catholic. He did more, I think, than any man of his time—and was able to do more than anyone else, because of his particular background, development and abilities as a public performer—to maintain the existence of the important minority in the modern world. He leaves behind a permanent claim upon our loyalty, to see that the work that he did in his time is continued in ours."

Among the many masterpieces of G.K. Chesterton, The Everlasting Man is his crowning achievement. It was the book that set a young atheist named C.S. Lewis on the path toward Christianity. Evelyn Waugh called it “a permanent monument” that “needs no elucidation.” And its lively prose and compelling defense of Christianity have dazzled readers ever since.
But a little elucidation, it turns out, is needed. Chesterton’s presentation of the story of humanity and religion is filled with obscure literary, historical, mythological, philosophical, and theological references—most of which are largely lost on today’s readers. And Chesterton’s paradoxical and apparently wandering style proves, at times, disorienting to newcomers.
In this groundbreaking guide—the first of its kind—one of the world’s leading authorities on Chesterton walks readers through the entirety of this great apologist’s text. Complete with an introduction, footnotes, and running commentary, Dale Ahlquist’s tour through Chesterton’s classic will draw new readers into his literary world—and old readers even deeper into his literary genius.

This is actual film footage in it's entirety of G.K. Chesterton being made an honorary Holy Cross Crusader by Holy Cross College on May 1st, 1931. I'm sorry for the poor quality, but I had to purchase this footage from the archives of an English film company, and I couldn't afford the high quality version (more than $500). I have some stills of the higher quality version however, and have interjected a couple of them into the film where there were missing frames.
G.K. Chesterton was an author and journalist during the early part of the 20th century. He is best known for his "Father Brown" stories, a novel called "The Man Who Was Thursday", and a Christian view of the history of ancient art, culture, religion, and anthropology called "The Everlasting Man". The latter was the book C.S. Lewis said helped him the most in his own spiritual studies.
