What is Cubism? Art Movements & Styles
Cubism is often referred to as one of the most avant-garde and revolutionary art movements of the modern era... but what is Cubist art and who were the Cubists?
The two main artists who were the ‘inventors’ of Cubism in 1907 were France’s Georges Braque and Spain’s Pablo Picasso. Despite the name, neither of these Cubist’s painted cubes. Instead of painting a figure or object from a fixed position they represented it from multiple viewpoints.

Easy Cubism Art Movement – Analytic Cubism vs Synthetic Cubism - Cubist portrait
In this easy cubism art movement video I look at Cubism and the difference between analytic cubism vs synthetic cubism. I can’t possibly tell everything about Cubism in this video so this is cubism light or easy cubism art. It’s also from my personal viewpoint. The Cubism art movement started around 1907 and lasted until 1920. I will paint a cubist portrait or cubist face, cubist style. Later on in this video I will also paint a cubist collage. The synthetic cubism collage is more fun to do, you can combine all sort of materials.

Welcome to this art history video about the history of Cubism, one of the most significant art movements of the 20th century. In this video, we will discuss the origins of Cubism, its' key figures like Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque, and Cubism's different phases, including Analytical Cubism.
Cubism emerged in the early 1900s as a response to the traditional forms of painting that dominated the art world. It was a movement that sought to break away from the rules of perspective and representation that had been established in the Renaissance. Instead, Cubists artists aimed to represent the world from multiple viewpoints simultaneously, emphasizing geometric shapes and abstract forms.
Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque are considered the founders of cubism. They began to experiment with the style in the early 1900s, leading to the creation of some of the most iconic works of the movement. Picasso's "Les Demoiselles d'Avignon" (1907) and Braque's "Houses at L'Estaque" (1908) (or "Large Nude", 1908) are often cited as the first examples of Cubism. Influenced by Paul Cezanne's work and African tribal masks, Picasso and Braque proceeded with creating a unique art style.
The Cubist movement went through different phases, including Analytical Cubism, which was characterized by the deconstruction of forms into basic geometric shapes and the use of monochromatic colors. This phase is considered the most radical and intellectually demanding of the movement. Analytical cubist paintings often featured fragmented objects, and the artists focused on depicting the underlying structure and composition of their subjects.
Cubism was an influential art movement that rejected traditional forms of representation and sought to represent the world in a new way. Its' founders, Picasso and Braque, revolutionized the art world by introducing new techniques and approaches to painting. Analytical Cubism is a key phase of the movement, and it is characterized by the use of geometric shapes and monochromatic colors to depict the underlying structure of the subjects.
Feel free to use this video to introduce Cubism to your students, elementary art through high school art classes.

Lets Draw a Cubist Face:
1) We can draw parts of the face in any angle we want.
2) Try only to use simple geometrical shapes while drawing.
3) Nose can be a triangle, ears can be circles or any shape you want!
4) It feels like we're looking at the face from the front and from the side at the same time.
5) Once the drawing is done, it's coloring time to have some fun.
6) We're free to pick any color, I won't use the ones that are duller.
7) Cubism is fun because we're free to experiment!
8) There are no wrongs in this art, just looking at this face melts my heart...
Don’t forget kids, LEARNING IS AWESOME!!!

Materials
The art materials I use in the videos are not sponsored.
I prefer to work on multi-purpose paper, more info in this video: https://youtu.be/H2vpSqvUESg
In almost all my videos I use with Winsor&Newton Galeria acrylics, if not, I will say so in the video.
Other materials I use are in random order: 5, 10 and 40mm brushes, palette knives, acrylics medium, Ecoline liquid watercolor, Lyra color pencils, Lyra soft pastels, oil pastels, Stabilo color pencils, paper palette pad and basic masking tape. I also use household items like a permanent marker, scrub sponge, scissors, paper towel, and so on.
