Frontex (from French: Frontières extérieures for "external borders") is an agency of the European Union established in 2004 to manage the cooperation between national border guards securing its external borders. Frontex operations aim to detect and stop illegal immigration, human trafficking and terrorist infiltration. The agency has its seat in Warsaw, Poland.
On 15 December 2015 the European Commission presented its proposal for a new European Border and Coast Guard Agency that would replace and succeed Frontex, having a stronger role and mandate and forming a European Border and Coast Guard along with national authorities for border management.
Responsibilities
Frontex was established by Council Regulation (EC) 2007/2004. It began work on 3 October 2005 and was the first EU agency to be based in one of the new EU member states from 2004. Frontex' mission is to help European Union member states implement EU rules on external border controls and to coordinate cooperation between member states in external border management. While it remains the task of each member state to control its own borders, Frontex is vested to ensure that they all do so with the same high standard of efficiency. The agency's main tasks according to the Council Regulation are:
Frontex is where we’re needed most, working together with national authorities for a safer, more secure Europe.

Frontex standing corps officers at border crossing points with Romania and Moldavia
In Romania and Moldova, Frontex standing corps officers work at border crossing points to help their colleagues with border checks and detection of cross-border crime.
They come from different EU countries and represent various profiles.
They help to check passengers and vehicles, but are also trained to spot potential cases of trafficking in human beings and vulnerable groups.
The officers also help the authorities in managing the arrival of refugees from Ukraine – since the start of the war, already 6 million people fled the country.

Frontex Situation Centre
Effective border management requires an accurate and timely picture of the external borders and an analysis of possible threats and vulnerabilities. For the management of Europe’s borders to be consistent, timely information flow is key. For this reason, much of Frontex's daily work is related to gathering, analysing and disseminating information about the situation at the external borders and identifying potential risks. While Frontex risk analysts concentrate on analysing the past and predicting future trends in migration, the Frontex Situation Centre’s (FSC) job is to focus on the present. The FSC maintains the clearest possible picture of the most recent developments at EU borders. By constantly monitoring Frontex’s own operations, media sources and information from Member States’ bord...
