Calgary home shot up by BB gun, suspects caught on camera
Calgary police are investigating after a home in Beddington Heights was shot at with a BB gun nearly a dozen times on Saturday night. The family says the shooter walked near their home for an hour before opening fire and damaging the property.
“It’s not OK scaring small children and families in the place that is their safe space,” said Cindy Horvath, who adds she has no idea why the family was targeted.
Craig Momney reports.

Lyrics:
Yeah
Same bar, same street
I’m 20, but I still feel like 15
Oh oh
Same fears, same dreams
Still tryna get my brother to like me
Mhmm
You said that I always seem to land on my feet
But I got problems hanging like a chin on my neck
Trying but I’m barely seeing past 23
The best of me right now is looking a lot like a mess
I thought I had my shit together
Can’t lie the pills are looking tempting
Oh oh
I thought that I was getting better
No, I got better at pretending
Oh oh
Ohhhhhh ohhhhhh
Ohhhhhhh ohhhhhh
Old friends downtown
They didn’t like me then
And don’t like me now
I’m drunk, oh wow
All my habits came back around
I’ll figure it out, that’s what I say
Figure it out and take a break
I’ll figure it out
maybe one day I’ll finally get my shit together
Can’t lie the pills are looking tempting
Oh oh
I thought that I was getting better
No, I got better at pretending
Oohh
Ohhhhhhh ohhhhhh
Ohhhhhh ohhhhhh
And I do it again, I’m a creature of habit
The moment’s gone but I’m still tryna catch it
Everyone left, and I never got past it
Never got past it
I thought I had my shit together
Can’t lie the pills are looking tempting
Oh oh
I thought that I was getting better
I thought I was getting better

Calgary police are investigating after a home in Beddington Heights was shot at with a BB gun nearly a dozen times on Saturday night. The family says the shooter walked near their home for an hour before opening fire and damaging the property.
“It’s not OK scaring small children and families in the place that is their safe space,” said Cindy Horvath, who adds she has no idea why the family was targeted.
Craig Momney reports.

Adjusting sense representations for knowledge-based word sense disambiguation
Speaker: Tristan Miller, Technische Universität Darmstadt (Germany)
Abstract: Word sense disambiguation (WSD) – the task of determining which meaning a word carries in a particular context – is a core research problem in computational linguistics. Though it has long been recognized that supervised (i.e., machine learning–based) approaches to WSD can yield impressive results, they require an amount of manually annotated training data that is often too expensive or impractical to obtain. This is a particular problem for under-resourced languages and text domains, and is also a hurdle in well-resourced languages when processing the sort of lexical-semantic anomalies employed for deliberate effect in humour and wordplay. In contrast to supervised systems are knowledge-based techniques, whi...

Why is Whistler Bike Park such a big freaking deal?
In a recent poll, it seems that 78% of you have never been to a lift access bike park like Whistler, which is actually pretty unsurprising. Some of these places are not easy to get to, and some of you aren't even that interested in downhill. Nevertheless, "Whistler" pops up a lot in MTB news as well as YouTube, and most of this content presumes you have certain knowledge about the place.
Some of you may feel that you have "stupid" questions about it, but I feel that no such questions exist.
This video is meant to serve as an introduction to Whistler so that other videos are easier to understand. If this upload isn't up to normal standards, it's because I produced it on location.

These techniques are of more general applicability but tend to suffer from lower performance due to the informational gap between the target word's context and the sense descriptions provided by the LSR. In this seminar, we treat the task of extending the efficacy and applicability of knowledge-based WSD, both generally and for the particular case of English puns. In the first part of the talk, we present two approaches for bridging the information gap and thereby improving WSD coverage and accuracy. In the first approach, we supplement the word's context and the LSR's sense descriptions with entries from a distributional thesaurus. The second approach enriches an LSR's sense information by aligning it to other, complementary LSRs. In the second part of the talk, we describe how these techniques, along with evaluation methodologies from traditional WSD, can be adapted for the "disambiguation" of puns, or rather for the automatic identification of their double meanings.

In contrast to supervised systems are knowledge-based techniques, which rely only on pre-existing lexical-semantic resources (LSRs) such as dictionaries and thesauri.

Calgary (/ˈkælɡri/ (About this soundlisten)) is a city in the western Canadian province of Alberta. It is situated at the confluence of the Bow River and the Elbow River in the south of the province, in an area of foothills and prairie, about 80 km (50 mi) east of the front ranges of the Canadian Rockies, roughly 299 km (186 mi) south of the provincial capital of Edmonton and approximately 240 km (150 mi) north of the Canada–United States border. The city anchors the south end of the Statistics Canada-defined urban area, the Calgary–Edmonton Corridor.[12]
The Calgary Metropolitan Area had a population of roughly 1,581,000 in the beginning of 2021,[13] making it Alberta's most-populous city and the second most-populous in western Canada. In 2016, Calgary had a metropolitan population of 1,392,609, making it the fourth-largest census metropolitan area (CMA) in Canada and second-largest in western Canada (after Vancouver).
Calgary's economy includes activity in the energy, financial services, film and television, transportation and logistics, technology, manufacturing, aerospace, health and wellness, retail, and tourism sectors.[14] The Calgary Metropolitan Region is home to Canada's second-highest number of corporate head offices among the country's 800 largest corporations.[15] In 2015 Calgary had the highest number of millionaires per capita of any major Canadian city.[16] In 1988 it became the first Canadian city to host the Winter Olympic Games.
The Economist Intelligence Unit ranked Calgary the most livable city in North America in both 2018 and 2019. Calgary has been a top 5 contender for this title for the last 10 years.[17] Calgary was also ranked the best city in the world for drivers in 2019.[18]

Canada election: How are federal electoral districts determined?
The 2019 federal election is underway and all parties have launched campaigns in their drive to be the next government of Canada.
Parliament was dissolved on Sept. 11, which gave the Liberals, the Conservatives, the NDP, the Greens, and the Bloc Quebecois 40 days to try to convince voters they are the right choice.
During elections, we always hear about which ridings we should be watching, or which ones are likely to vote for certain parties. But have you ever stopped to think how those ridings are formed in the first place?

NWT Wildfires: Trudeau promises better infrastructure, support, commends Premier Cochrane | FULL
Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau met with Northwest Territories Premier Caroline Cochrane on Saturday amid the ongoing wildfires and mass evacuations in the territory.
On Friday, Cochrane called for all Canadians to speak out over a lack of infrastructure and communications in the territory.

"I'm tired, have been tired for a long time for asking for infrastructure, and now I'm angry." Cochrane said on Friday, during a joint press conference in Calgary with Alberta Premier Danielle Smith.

Wildfire in Canada's Northwest Territories prompts evacuations & threatens capital Yellowknife
Wildfires swept through Canada's Northwest Territories on Tuesday (August 15), forcing people to evacuate their homes, almost totally destroying one remote community and posing a risk to territorial capital Yellowknife.
Emergency vehicles were dispatched to contain the blazes and a state of emergency declared on Tuesday.
The Canadian government said it has approved federal assistance to combat the wildfires, and deployed armed forces to help with firefighting efforts in the area. The city of Yellowknife, the capital of the Northwest Territories, also declared a state of local emergency late on Monday to brace for potential risks from nearby wildfires.
The hamlet of Enterprise, a settlement of just over 100 people, was almost completely destroyed by fire, CBC News reported on Tuesday, qu...

After commending Cochrane for her leadership and approach to tackling the devastating situation, Trudeau addressed the "gap" Cochrane spoke of, promising more "resilient infrastructure" and further support for the territory as it faces the consequences of severe climate change.
"I'm tired, have been tired for a long time for asking for infrastructure, and now I'm angry." Cochrane said on Friday, during a joint press conference in Calgary with
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith.
Cochrane also addressed pressing climate challenges, including melting permafrost, Arctic Sea ice loss, and increasing fires. "If this happens next year, is it my fault? Whose fault is it when we can't get people out because we don't have basic infrastructure that every Canadian takes for granted?"
Tens of thousands have been forced from the territory, with more than 21,500 people seeking refuge elsewhere. Cochrane, an evacuee herself, shared her gratitude for the provincial governments of Alberta and Manitoba.

The hamlet of Enterprise, a settlement of just over 100 people, was almost completely destroyed by fire, CBC News reported on Tuesday, quoting Enterprise's mayor.
Wildfires have engulfed parts of nearly all 13 Canadian provinces and territories this year, forcing home evacuations, disrupting energy production, and drawing in federal as well as international firefighting resources.
