Frida Kahlo - A Life of Pain - Biographical Documentary
Frida Kahlo is one of the most popular and recognisable artists of the 20th century.
She is known for her painting, her politics, her tempestuous relationship with fellow artist Diego Rivera, and many others, and her fierce independence.
But behind the vibrancy and energy of her work was a life wracked with pain, both physical and emotional, from a near fatal accident at the age of 18. She had over 30 surgeries over the course of her life to try to relieve her pain but ended up by having her leg amputated.
She taught herself to paint while lying recovering in bed and like no other artist she laid out her pain for all to see, unapologetic, uncompromising, deeply personal, yet tapping into something universal.
This video explores Frida’s colourful, dramatic and painful life story.

A Mysterious Story of Frida Kahlo That Reveals Her True Character
Her paintings have a distinctive one-of-a-kind style. Her unibrow has become iconic. If you’ve seen her once, you’ll never confuse her with anyone else. Frida Kahlo was an extremely strong woman whose brilliant works of art were inspired by her own life-long challenges and suffering.
It seems like there was a veil of mystery around Frida ever since she was born. Even though her birth year was 1907, she changed it to 1910. And, she didn’t do it to be 3 years younger, but to have a connection to the Mexican Revolution that started in 1910 and lasted up until 1920.

To Feel The Pain of Frida Kahlo (Full Documentary)
The Mexican painter Frida Kahlo is conceivably one of the most celebrated and recognisable female artists that the world has yet known. Considered nowadays to be an icon that only continues to inspire millions around the world increasingly over time with the artwork she produced, most significantly within her many, surreal and colourful self-portraits.
Fascinatingly, her work would remain obscured and nearly completely forgotten until towards the end of the 20th century, when art historians would bring her work to the surface. Not only because of her unique style of painting, but due to her passionate, undying political and social beliefs throughout her adult life, she has long since been recognized as a crucial, inspirational figure within feminism, the LGBTQ community and of course, th...

Inspired to paint like Frida Kahlo!
I am inspired to paint by the words of Frida Kahlo.
Frida Kahlo is one of the most famous and influential artists of the 20th century.
However, behind the bright and energetic art was a life full of physical and emotional pain from a nearly fatal accident at 18.
She had over 30 surgeries to ease her pain but eventually had her leg amputated.
She learned to paint while recovering in bed. Unlike any other artist, she expressed her pain openly, without apology, showing something deeply personal yet universal.
At a time when women were fighting to be heard, Frida led the way for future generations.
Despite serious health problems, she created some of the most powerful self-portraits ever.

Frida Kahlo is the most famous female artist in history. She deviated from the traditional portrayal of female beauty in art, and instead chose to paint raw and honest experiences. A near fatal bus accident at 18 left Frida crippled and in chronic pain her whole life, but she managed to make a virtue out of adversity, and astonishing original art out of her pain. She was a Mexican, female artist who was disabled, in a male-dominated environment in post-revolutionary Mexico. A feminist icon who broke all social conventions, and produced some of the most haunting and visionary images of the 20th century.
James Payne explains 'The Two Fridas', her greatest painting, created during a period of deep instability fro Frida Kahlo.

SUMMARY:
- As a girl, she never had good health. At the age of 6, she was diagnosed with poliomyelitis. As a result of this infectious disease, Frida walked with a limp her entire life, and her legs were disproportionate – the right one was a little thinner than the left one.
- It may have been the health problems that inspired Frida to become a doctor. She entered the best high school in Mexico called La Prepatoria in Mexico City.
- At the age of 18, the future artist got into a terrible accident: she was traveling by bus, and a streetcar crashed into it. She broke her collarbone, two ribs, and her leg, crushed her foot and her shoulder was dislocated.
- But, a strong spirit like Frida couldn’t be crushed. She was unconscious for several weeks, and when she woke up, she immediately asked her father to buy her art supplies.
- Frida herself said: “There were 2 accidents in my life: one when a bus hit a tram, and the second was Diego.” She met Diego Rivera several years after the accident.
- Diego was never a good husband. 2 of his previous marriages ended because he cheated. His third marriage was not a happy exception.
- Frida became pregnant several times but all of her pregnancies ended with miscarriages because of that same unfortunate accident. Even after doctors recommended bed rest, Frida still couldn’t give birth to a healthy child, and she sunk into depression.
- In 1939, after a painful divorce with her husband, Frida Kahlo created her iconic self-portrait “The Two Fridas”. It shows the two different sides of her character, connected by a vein and holding hands.
- The artist created a total of 55 self-portraits, most of them were of herself surrounded by animals. She loved animals and had dogs, monkeys, parrots, and pigeons as pets.
- In 1953, her leg had to be amputated because of gangrene. The same year, she had a personal exhibition in Mexico which she attended on her bed.
- She felt that she would die soon, so she wrote in her diary, “I hope the exit is joyful. And I hope never to return.” Frida Kahlo finished her last work 8 days before her death.

Not only because of her unique style of painting, but due to her passionate, undying political and social beliefs throughout her adult life, she has long since been recognized as a crucial, inspirational figure within feminism, the LGBTQ community and of course, the history of Mexican peoples.
The many surprises that creep up in Kahlo’s life to those wanting to know more is nearly endless. From her sexuality to her disabilities, to her grotesque and abusive husband, there truly is so much to uncover. Which is why for this video series, we will be looking at not only her artwork in-depth, but also her life story, in hopes that we can leave no stone unturned. How exactly was Kahlo so ahead of her time? What was it about her that made her virtually an outcast during her lifetime, but a celebrated enigma for today’s current society long after her death?
This is a full compilation video of a three-part series I worked on a while back called “To Feel The Pain of Frida Kahlo”. You can still watch the original three episodes via the playlist below.
