France is a representative democracy. Public officials in the legislative and executive branches are either elected by the citizens (directly or indirectly) or appointed by elected officials. Referendums may also be called to consult the French citizenry directly on a particular question, especially one which concerns amendment to the Constitution.
France elects on its national level a head of state – the president – and a legislature
The National Assembly (Assemblée Nationale) has 577 members, elected for a five-year term in single seat-constituencies directly by the citizens.
The Senate (Sénat) has 348 members, 328 of which are elected for six-year terms by an electoral college consisting of elected representatives from each département, 8 of which are elected from other dependencies, and 12 of which are elected by the French Assembly of French Citizens Abroad (Assemblée des Français de l'étranger) which has replaced the High Council of French Citizens Abroad (Conseil Supérieur des Français de l'Étranger) a 155-member assembly elected by citizens living abroad.
A presidential election was held in France on 22 April 2012 (or 21 April in some overseas departments and territories), with a second round run-off held on 6 May (or 5 May for those same territories) to elect the President of France (who is also ex officio one of the two joint heads of state of Andorra, a sovereign state). The incumbent Nicolas Sarkozy was running for a second successive and, under the terms of the constitution, final term in the election.
The first round ended with the selection of François Hollande and Nicolas Sarkozy as second round participants, as neither of them received a majority of votes cast in the first round. Hollande won the runoff with 51.64% of the vote to Sarkozy's 48.36%.
The 2011 French Socialist Party presidential primary was the first open primary (primaires citoyennes), jointly held by the French Socialist Party and Radical Party of the Left for selecting their candidate for the 2012 presidential election. Voters had to donate at least one Euro and sign a pledge to the values of the Left to be eligible. The filing deadline for primary nomination papers was fixed on 13 July 2011 and six candidates competed in the first round of the vote. On election day, 9 October 2011, no candidate won at least 50% of the vote therefore the two candidates with the most votes contested a runoff election on 16 October 2011: François Hollande won the primary, defeating Martine Aubry. The idea for holding an open primary to choose the Socialist Party candidate was originally suggested in 2008 by the left-leaning think tank Terra Nova.
The winner, decided on 5 and 6 May 2007, was Nicolas Sarkozy. The first round of voting took place on Saturday, 21 April 2007 (French territories in the Americas and the Eastern Pacific) and Sunday, 22 April 2007 (French territories in the Western Pacific, Indian Ocean, and Metropolitan France). As no candidate obtained a majority (50 percent plus one), a second round between the two leading candidates, Nicolas Sarkozy and Ségolène Royal, took place on Saturday, 5 May and Sunday, 6 May 2007.
Sarkozy and Royal both represented a generational change. Either candidate would have become the first French president to be born after World War II, the first to have seen adulthood under the Fifth Republic, and the first not to have been in politics under Charles de Gaulle.
Summary of results
The first round saw a very high turnout of 83.8% – 36.7million of the 44.5million electorate voted from a population of 64.1million (not including French people living abroad). The results of that round saw Sarkozy and Royal qualify for the second round with Sarkozy getting 31% and Royal 26%. François Bayrou came third (19%) and Jean-Marie Le Pen fourth (10%), unlike in 2002 when Le Pen got a surprising 16.9% and qualified for the second round.

French election: Left celebrates as far-Right faces surprise defeat | BBC News
France’s left-wing political coalition, the New Popular Front, is celebrating after exit polls in the second round of parliamentary elections predicted it was on course for victory.
France's far-right National Rally had been widely expected to win the election after leading in the first round of voting.
The snap election was called by a weakened President Macron, in response to a surge in support for the far-right party led by Marine Le Pen. Prime Minister Gabriel Attal, who was appointed by President Macron only seven months ago, has said he is planning to resign.
France is now heading for a hung parliament with no party expected to achieve an overall majority. The biggest group in the left-wing alliance is led by the radical socialist Jean-Luc Mélenchon, who may now become Prime...

The biggest group in the left-wing alliance is led by the radical socialist Jean-Luc Mélenchon, who may now become Prime Minister.

The biggest group in the left-wing alliance is led by the radical socialist Jean-Luc Mélenchon, who may now become Prime Minister.
Reeta Chakrabarti presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Katya Adler and Andrew Harding.

A right-wing political party was expected to take control of the French legislature, but instead a left-wing coalition won the largest share of seats, exit polls projected. However, it is not enough to take control. President Emmanuel Macron's centrist alliance came in second.
