The French Congo began at Brazzaville on 10 September 1880 as a protectorate over the Bateke people along the north bank of the Congo River, was formally established as the French Congo on 30 November 1882, and was confirmed at the Berlin Conference of 1884–85. Its borders with Cabinda, Cameroons, and the Congo Free State were established by treaties over the next decade. The plan to develop the colony was to grant massive concessions to some thirty French companies. These were granted huge swaths of land on the promise they would be developed. This development was limited and amounted mostly to the extraction of ivory, rubber, and timber. These operations often involved great brutality and the near enslavement of the locals.
Even with these measures most of the companies lost money. Only about ten earned profits. Many of the companies' vast holdings existed only on paper with virtually no presence on the ground in Africa.

Why Are There Two Congos?
A short video explaining why there are two countries with very similar names. The Democratic Republic of the Congo and its neighbour, the Republic of the Congo. I also talk about some similar naming issues, as well as briefly looking at many African nations that share the same colour scheme.
In this video, I briefly touch on the European colonisation of Africa. This is a topic which I plan on doing an entire video on some day in the not too distant future.

(13 Jun 1997) Natural Sound
French troops will start leaving Brazzaville on Sunday after evacuating all the remaining French nationals from the strife-torn capital of Congo.
The French Foreign Ministry said on Friday that the evacuation should end on Sunday, when the French military would begin to pull out.
France has more than 12-hundred soldiers in Brazzaville, many of whom were involved in Friday's evacuations.
In the Congolese capital, a unit of French Foreign Legion troops drives into town on another rescue mission.
France flew out hundreds more foreigners on Friday and predicted it would complete its evacuation over the weekend.
This would clear the way for the 12-hundred French troops there to leave.
A French military spokesman said 43-hundred foreigners had been air lifted from the city by Friday evening.
A lull in the fighting around the capital Friday allowed for the further evacuations to take place.
About 200 people are left at the evacuation centre and are due to be flown out on Saturday.
The French military says after that, if there are no more people left to evacuate, they will begin to pull out.
France has always said its only mission in Brazzaville was to ensure the security of foreigners and that it would leave when it was certain all who wanted to leave were out.
That could provoke new fighting for the international airport, which is currently under French control and would be an obvious prize should the foreign forces abandon it.

Roughly 350 migrants from the Congo are expected to arrive in San Antonio in the coming days, leaving the city scrambling for French-speaking volunteers.
Grégoire de Fournas, a French far-right lawmaker from the National Rally party, caused an uproar in parliament on Thursday when he shouted 'Go back to Africa!' during a question by the left-wing parliamentarian Carlos Martens Bilongo.

Bilongo, who is black, was speaking about the refugee crisis, imploring lawmakers to take urgent action to help African migrants. Fournas's interjection caused chaos in the chamber, with MPs shouting 'get out' before the house speaker, Yaël Braun-Pivet, temporarily suspended the session.
