Francis George "Frank" Middlemass (28 May 1919– 8 September 2006) was an Englishactor, who even in his early career played older roles. He is best remembered for his television roles as Rocky Hardcastle in As Time Goes By, Algy Herries in To Serve Them All My Days and Dr. Alex Ferrenby in Heartbeat. Middlemass was also active in the Royal Shakespeare Company and was the fourth and final actor to play Dan Archer in The Archers.
Early life
Born to Thomas Middlemass and Mary Elizabeth Hoggett, Frank Middlemass was the youngest of four children after sisters Dorothy Mary (born 1907), Margery Elizabeth (born 1909) and Jean Theresa (born 1916). Grandfather Thomas is shown in 1891 census to have been born in Whitsome, Berwickshire around 1835.

First broadcast in January 1992, As Time Goes By featured the wonderful pairing of Dame Judi Dench and Geoffrey Palmer as two former lovers who are reunited after many years apart. Possibly the most camp edition of Crown Court, but most entertaining nonetheless! Jasper Fortescue (Frank Middlemass) is charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm.
Some wonderfully "arch" performances here and some genuinely funny moments: look out for some knowing looks and a bravura performance from Barbara Hicks as Lady Dupuis!
Both Barbara Hicks and Frank Middlemass appeared in different episodes with Joan Hickson in "Miss Marple". Some wonderfully "arch" performances here and some genuinely funny moments: look out for some knowing looks and a bravura performance from Barbara Hicks as Lady Dupuis!
Both Barbara Hicks and Frank Middlemass appeared in different episodes with Joan Hickson in "Miss Marple". Denis Carey (Sir Harold Dupuis), George Waring (the police constable) and Angus MacKay (defence counsel) appeared in many TV programmes, including Doctor Who. Carol Gillies, with that brilliant expressive face, was known for her appearances in Within These Walls and Widows. Keith Barron, known from Duty Free, appears as the prosecuting counsel. Richard Caldicot is perhaps best known for his appearance in the Fawlty Towers' episode "Gourmet Night".
Francis George "Frank" Middlemass (28 May 1919– 8 September 2006) was an Englishactor, who even in his early career played older roles. He is best remembered for his television roles as Rocky Hardcastle in As Time Goes By, Algy Herries in To Serve Them All My Days and Dr. Alex Ferrenby in Heartbeat. Middlemass was also active in the Royal Shakespeare Company and was the fourth and final actor to play Dan Archer in The Archers.
Early life
Born to Thomas Middlemass and Mary Elizabeth Hoggett, Frank Middlemass was the youngest of four children after sisters Dorothy Mary (born 1907), Margery Elizabeth (born 1909) and Jean Theresa (born 1916). Grandfather Thomas is shown in 1891 census to have been born in Whitsome, Berwickshire around 1835.
