Francis Bacon
Francis Bacon, 1st Viscount St AlbanPC KC (/ˈbeɪkən/; 22 January 1561 – 9 April 1626) was an English philosopher, statesman, scientist, jurist, orator, and author. He served both as Attorney General and Lord Chancellor of England. After his death, he remained extremely influential through his works, especially as philosophical advocate and practitioner of the scientific method during the scientific revolution.
Bacon has been called the father of empiricism. His works argued for the possibility of scientific knowledge based only upon inductive and careful observation of events in nature. Most importantly, he argued this could be achieved by use of a skeptical and methodical approach whereby scientists aim to avoid misleading themselves. While his own practical ideas about such a method, the Baconian method, did not have a long lasting influence, the general idea of the importance and possibility of a skeptical methodology makes Bacon the father of scientific method. This marked a new turn in the rhetorical and theoretical framework for science, the practical details of which are still central in debates about science and methodology today.

Francis Bacon (artist)
Francis Bacon (28 October 1909 – 28 April 1992) was an Irish-born British figurative painter known for his bold, grotesque, emotionally charged and raw imagery. His painterly abstracted figures are typically isolated in glass or steel geometrical cages, set against flat, nondescript backgrounds. Bacon took up painting in his early 20s but worked sporadically and uncertainly until his mid-30s. Unsure of his ability, he drifted as a highly complex bon vivant, homosexual, gambler and interior decorator and designer of furniture, rugs and bathroom tiles. He later admitted that his artistic career was delayed because he spent too long looking for subject matter that could sustain his interest.
His breakthrough came with the 1944 triptych Three Studies for Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion, which in the immediate aftermath of the Second World War, sealed his reputation as a uniquely bleak chronicler of the human condition. Remarking on the cultural significance of Three Studies, John Russell observed that "there was painting in England before the Three Studies, and painting after them, and no one...can confuse the two."

Sir Francis Bacon (1587 – 1657) was an English judge.
Life
He was the son of John Bacon, of King's Lynn, Norfolk, born about 1587. He began his legal studies at Barnard's Inn, and was admitted a member of Gray's Inn in February 1607. He was not called to the bar until eight years later in 1615. His name as counsel is not found in contemporary reports, and it has been inferred that his practice must have been either in chancery or in the provinces.
In 1634 he was Autumn Reader at Gray's Inn; in 1640 he was admitted to the degree of serjeant-at-law. In October 1642, the king, being then at Bridgnorth on his way to London, appointed Bacon to a seat in the King's Bench. Among the propositions tendered by parliament to the king in February 1643 were demands for the dismissal of several of the judges, but 'Mr. Justice Bacon may be continued '. While Charles was at Oxford, Bacon was one of the sworn judges still at Westminster, of which there were three, and presided alone in the King's Bench, as Edmund Reeve and Trevor did in the Common Pleas and Exchequer

Francis Bacon (Ipswich MP)
Francis Bacon (30 September 1600 – c. September 1663) was an English politician who sat in the House of Commons at various times between 1645 and 1660. He supported the Parliamentary cause in the English Civil War.
Life
Bacon was the son of Sir Edward Bacon of Shrubland, Barham, Suffolk, son of Queen Elizabeth's Keeper of the Great Seal Sir Nicholas Bacon by his first wife, Jane Ferneley (d.1552). He was educated at Queens' College, Cambridge. His brother was Nathaniel Bacon.
In 1645 Bacon was elected Member of Parliament (MP) for Ipswich in the Long Parliament. In 1654 he was re-elected MP for Ipswich in the First Protectorate Parliament and was returned in 1656 and 1659 for the Second and Third Protectorate Parliaments.
In April 1660, Bacon was elected for the Convention Parliament which proclaimed the Restoration of Charles II in which he served with his brother Nathaniel and later with Sir Frederick Cornwallis Bt.
He had married Katherine, daughter of Sir Thomas Wingfield of Letheringham, Suffolk; they had six sons (of whom four died before him) and two daughters.

Francis Hugh Bacon (24 June 1869 – 31 October 1915) was an English cricketer. Bacon was a right-handed batsman who was a right-arm slow bowler.
Career
Bacon first played for Hampshire in 1894, the season in which the county club regained its first-class status, although Bacon made no first-class appearances for the county that season. The following season Bacon made his first-class debut for Hampshire against Somerset.
Bacon played 75 first-class matches for Hampshire, with the 1903 season being his most successful 357 runs at a batting average of 18.78, with a high score of 39*. In terms of batting average, the 1906 season was Bacon's best with 308 runs at a batting average of 23.69, with three fifties and a high score of 60.
Bacon's final match for Hampshire came in the 1911 County Championship against Lancashire at Old Trafford in Manchester. In Bacon's 75 first-class matches for the county he scored 1,909 runs at a batting average of 15.77, with five half centuries and a single century which gave Bacon his highest score of 110 against Leicestershire in 1907. Bacon also took 6 wickets at a bowling average of 31.66, with best figures of 2/23.

This is the story and artwork of Francis Bacon, the famous, Irish-born experimental and figurative painter born in 1909, in Dublin. His paintings were a prominent presence within the art community over many decades following the end of WW2, after exhibiting his tryptic called "Three Studies for Figures at the Base of a Crucifixion", which would stun all that first saw it.
In this first segment of the documentary, we explore where Francis Bacon came from, how he discovered art and, from a certain point of view, where his inspiration for his trademark dark imagery first manifested.

An introduction to the philosophy of Francis Bacon, the father of empiricism. Bacon was born in London in 1561. He was an establishment figure born into one of the most powerful families in Britain. He as a member of the house of commons and the house of lords for 37 years, a lawyer, Attorney General, and a member of the Privy Council, the group who advises the monarch. He died of pneumonia after carrying out experiments with ice in 1626.
He’s interested in the question of what is useful, practical, the pursuit of improving our place in the world. He thought that the scholastic philosophy taught at the time was dry, closed off, esoteric, at a dead end.
First, to know the truth we have to be able to distinguish it from falsehood and for Bacon, the mind does a good job at distorting the truth.
He said that the mind was a ‘crooked mirror’, distorted by what he called idols. He wrote: There are four idols: idols of the tribe, idols of the cave, idols of the marketplace, and idols of the theatre.
To remedy the effect the idols have on the pursuit of knowledge, Bacon advocates for induction: the scientific method.
The Baconian Method starts with simple observations. He said ‘a new beginning has to be made from the lowest foundations.’ Instead of starting at the top, from general ideas, we start from the bottom, from particular observations, and work upwards to ‘general truths’ or axioms.

Francis Bacon was an English painter known for his striking, often disturbing portraits and images. Born in Dublin, Ireland in 1909, he moved to London as a young man and began studying art. After experimenting with several styles, he developed his signature technique, which involved distorting and abstracting the human form to create powerful, emotionally charged images.
Bacon's paintings often featured contorted figures, stark backgrounds, and intense, contrasting colors. His work was influenced by a wide range of sources, including art history, literature, and the human body itself. He became known for his ability to convey complex emotions and psychological states through his art.
Bacon's career was marked by both critical acclaim and controversy. His paintings were celebrated by many art critics and collectors, but were also considered shocking and disturbing by some. Despite this, he continued to create groundbreaking art until his death in 1992.
Today, Francis Bacon is widely regarded as one of the most important painters of the 20th century. His work continues to be exhibited and studied around the world, and his legacy as a pioneering artist remains secure. In 2013 his painting "Three Studies of Lucian Freud" became the most expensive work sold at auction - $142.4 million at Christie's in New York.

What do you do when you don’t want your work to be salvaged? After finding people rummaging through his trash in search of his discarded paintings, figurative artist Francis Bacon started slashing his paintings so that they may be irrecoverable. Hundreds of his paintings were found cut and destroyed. What leads an artist to use violence against his own art? How does an artist decide which painting is worthy of keeping and which is not? His 1962 painting Gorilla With Microphones was one of these paintings to be violently discarded. To continue our conversation on what art is or whether AI art is real art or not, today we explore what makes art worthy of being kept, and what type of art is to be violently cut up and thrown away.

Francis Bacon, 1st Viscount St AlbanPC KC (/ˈbeɪkən/; 22 January 1561 – 9 April 1626) was an English philosopher, statesman, scientist, jurist, orator, and author. He served both as Attorney General and Lord Chancellor of England. After his death, he remained extremely influential through his works, especially as philosophical advocate and practitioner of the scientific method during the scientific revolution.
Bacon has been called the father of empiricism. His works argued for the possibility of scientific knowledge based only upon inductive and careful observation of events in nature. Most importantly, he argued this could be achieved by use of a skeptical and methodical approach whereby scientists aim to avoid misleading themselves. While his own practical ideas about such a method, the Baconian method, did not have a long lasting influence, the general idea of the importance and possibility of a skeptical methodology makes Bacon the father of scientific method. This marked a new turn in the rhetorical and theoretical framework for science, the practical details of which are still central in debates about science and methodology today.
