Fra McCann (born 19 June 1953) is an Irishpolitician. McCann became active in the Irish republican movement and during the 1970s was jailed on a number of occasions. In 1987, he was elected to Belfast City Council in a by-election, representing Sinn Féin.
He was imprisoned during the 1970s for firearms offences. While being held in H-Block 3 of the Maze, McCann befriended Kieran Nugent and participated in the blanket protest.
In June 2006 McCann was charged with assault and disorderly behaviour following an incident in west Belfast. The incident occurred as the PSNI were attempting to arrest a teenager for attempted robbery. However, McCann alleged heavy-handedness and stated "I tried to put myself between one of the officers and the girl when the police officer radioed for assistance." McCann was released on bail.
Fra McCann has been a republican activist for 50 years. He has given a lifetime of service to the struggle for freedom and independence and to his community.
Just before Christmas 2019 he was informed that he had terminal prostate cancer. In between periods of treatment Fra has continued to fulfil his duties as a member of the northern Assembly, representing his constituents and in the midst of a pandemic continuing to deal with issues affecting the people of west Belfast.
Several months ago he was interviewed by Joe Austin – in line with health restrictions in place at that time.
Fra’s indomitable strength of character, personal courage and deep commitment to Irish Republicanism shines through in his political activism. This video is a tribute to a Republican hero.
