The Fountainhead is a 1943 novel by Ayn Rand, and her first major literary success. More than 6.5million copies of the book have been sold worldwide.
The Fountainhead's protagonist, Howard Roark, is an individualistic young architect who chooses to struggle in obscurity rather than compromise his artistic and personal vision. The book follows his battle to practice what the public sees as modern architecture, which he believes to be superior, despite an establishment centered on tradition-worship. How others in the novel relate to Roark demonstrates Rand's various archetypes of human character, all of which are variants between Roark, the author's ideal man of independence and integrity, and what she described as the "second-handers". The complex relationships between Roark and the various kinds of individuals who assist or hinder his progress, or both, allow the novel to be at once a romantic drama and a philosophical work. Roark is Rand's embodiment of what she believes to be the ideal man, and his struggle reflects Rand's personal belief that individualism trumps collectivism.
Fountainhead in Jackson, Mississippi, also known as J. Willis Hughes House, is a Usonian house designed by architect Frank Lloyd Wright. There are only three other homes in Mississippi designed by Wright, all of which are in Ocean Springs. The house was built in 1950 and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. The Hughes House has been a private residence since it was originally built and has never been open to the public. It is owned by Jackson architect Robert Parker Adams.

"Do you want to stand alone against the whole world?"
Architect Howard Roark has heard the voices of safety, convention, compromise. But Roark is a man as unyielding as the mighty structures he builds. And he will sacrifice everything--the woman he loves or the project he dynamites when others interfere with his design--to maintain his individuality in a world of lockstep conformity.

Iconic Sculpture Fountain Head Returns to Main Street After Extensive Restoration
Walnut Creek Public Art staff is happy to announce the return of Fountain Head following its removal for conservation in March 2024. The iconic sculpture by Seyed Alavi was first fabricated and installed in 2012 and, after many years of exposure to the elements, the surface showed signs of fading and water damage, causing the surface paint to bubble. Fountain Head required a complete dry out, which included baking in an oven, before it could withstand the process of undergoing an in-depth restoration that included cleaning, sealing, sanding, and painting. The conservationist painted Fountain Head with multiple layers of primer and industrial-strength paint which contains flecks of metal that allow for a sunlit sparkle that can be seen in person, in addition to several clear coats to protec...
