Found footage is a plot device in pseudo-documentaries in which all or a substantial part of a fictional film is presented as if it were discovered film or video recordings. The events on screen are typically seen through the camera of one or more of the characters involved, often accompanied by their real-time off-camera commentary. For verisimilitude, the cinematography may be done by the actors themselves as they perform, and shaky camera work and naturalistic acting are routinely employed. The footage may be presented as if it were "raw" and complete, or as if it had been edited into a narrative by those who "found" it.
The most common use of the technique is in horror films, where the footage is purported to be the only surviving record of the events, with the participants now missing or dead. It has also been used in comedy (e.g., Babysitting, Project X), science-fiction (e.g., Project Almanac, Europa Report), and drama (e.g., Exhibit A, Zero Day).
Historical found footage is often used in documentary films as a source of primary information, giving the viewer a more comprehensive understanding of the subject matter. Director and cinematographer Ken Burns used archival footage in his films. Baseball (1994), his documentary television series for PBS, incorporates historical footage accompanied by original music or actors reading relevant written documents.
Often fictional films imitate this style in order to increase their authenticity, especially the mockumentary genre. In the dramatized and embellished pseudo-documentary film F For Fake (1973), director Orson Welles borrows all shots of main subject Elmyr de Hory from a BBC documentary, rather than fabricating the footage himself.
Stuart Cooper's Overlord uses stock footage of the landing on Normandy during World War II to increase realism. The footage was obtained from the Imperial War Museum in the UK. Other parts of the film were shot by Cooper, but using old WWII-era film stock with WWII-era lenses.
The Jersey Devil (Full Movie, Found Footage-Style Pseudo-Documentary, Official Version) (2023)
A found footage-style movie filmed in the Pine Barrens (A.K.A. Brendan T. Byrne State Forest) in the southern section of the U.S. state of New Jersey. The Jersey Devil (Full Movie, Found Footage-Style Pseudo-Documentary, Director's Cut) (2023)
This is the director's cut of my first full-length feature film, after my first short film titled ‘Alone in a Room (On the Edge of Your Brain)” that I also made with my friend Alan Gustavson back on February 20th, 2018 when I was 25 years old. This first full-length movie is quite long, there wasn’t a whole lot I wanted to edit out. In this movie I explore several reportedly haunted locations in the U.S. state of New Jersey, the state where I’m from. In the first part of the movie I explore Shades of Death Road in Warren County, in the second part I explore Clinton Road in West Milford, and in the third & last part I explore the Pine Barrens (Brendan T. Byrne State Forest) in southern New Jersey where the Jersey Devil resides. Enjoy!!!

The Taking of DeborahLogan was released online almost a decade ago, but not many found-footage horror films have topped its shocking and troubling ending.
In a sea of less-than-satisfactory pseudo-documentaries, The Taking of DeborahLogan, while sharing similar elements to others of its kind, is a rare film that combines found footage with elevated horror.
Found footage is a difficult subgenre to pull off ... While films like Blair Witch Project and Paranormal Activity blew up and spawned franchises, there are several other lesser-known found footage movies begging to be seen.
The found-footage pseudo TV documentary was broadcast on Halloween on BBC One in 1992, and featured Sarah Greene and her late husband Mike Smith as well as TV legend Sir Michael – who died in August ...
"Horror in the High Desert," an eerie pseudo-documentary by writer/director Dutch Marich. Mixing found footage and reenactments, this gripping film unravels the enigma behind a baffling vanishing in NorthernNevada's High Desert.
The found-footage horror subgenre has always been a mixed bag, caught between playfully exploiting its pseudo-documentary techniques for jolty terror and floundering about trying to posit its mayhem as “real.”.
Italian media reported that he died on Thursday ... Read more. Cannibal Holocaust was also a pioneer of the “found footage” pseudo-documentary genre. it purported to be the footage recovered from an American film crew’s expedition into the Amazon jungle ... .
