Fordism and Scientific Management
There is little doubt that the development of scientific management principles and their application to the work process was a key ingredient in the emergence of the large, mass production, Fordist organization. Indeed, part of Ford’s initial success—and the organizational form that became a model for other industrial organizations—was the marriage of Taylor’s principles and the moving assembly line. Below, we discuss the system of work organization that Taylor developed. Fordism and Organizational Communication
Describing organizations as Fordist captures in a shorthand way the dominant organizational form of the 20th century. Named after industrialist Henry Ford (1863–1947), Fordism is generally understood not only as the emergence and dominance of the large-scale, mass-production organization but also as the development of a whole set of work, organizational, and societal principles that would shape people’s lives for most of the 20th century. Fordism was capitalism’s response to the threats to its legitimacy addressed above. What were these principles, and why were they so important in re-establishing the legitimacy of capitalism?

The Fall of Fordism and the Rise of Post Fordism
By the late 1960s and early 1970s, however, the large bureaucratic organization was beginning to show signs of wear and tear. There is no single reason for this deterioration, but several are worth mentioning. First, the 1970s witnessed a global economic crisis.
Second, there was a global energy crisis precipitated by the West’s increased reliance on Middle East oil supplies—a supply that was unpredictable because of political instability in that region of the world. Third, during this time many nations saw a great deal of industrial unrest. Fourth, and related, political unrest increased in the 1960s, much of it directed at the government and large corporations.
In short, by the 1970s, capitalism faced a serious challenge to its legitimacy, largely due to the fact that it faced a crisis...

As an engineer at the Midvale Steel Company in Pennsylvania, Taylor spent his entire professional career attempting to develop more efficient ways to work.
Starting in 1880, and continuing for 26 years, Taylor performed between 30,000 and 50,000 experiments on steel cutting alone. The development and implementation of the principles of scientific management, however, were by no means simply a technological issue. More than anything else, Taylor’s system addressed the relations between employers and employees.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Taylor was confronted with a work environment characterized by high levels of antagonism between workers and managers. Much of this conflict revolved around efforts by employers to intensify the work process (i.e., get workers to work harder) and corresponding attempts by workers to restrict their output. Taylor referred to this deliberate restriction of output by workers as systematic soldiering—a problem he saw as the central problem in the workplace.
In developing his principles of scientific management, Taylor’s objective was to replace this old system of ordinary management—a system he perceived as arbitrary and based on rules of thumb—with a rational system rooted in sound scientific principles. Taylor outlines four basic principles of scientific management: Scientific job design. Each element of the work task is designed according to scientific principles, thus replacing the old rule-of-thumb method of ordinary management.

Fordism involved a technical revolution in which the very nature of work was transformed, going through what might be termed a process of rationalization—the application of rational principles to make work as efficient and productive as possible. Work under Fordism was characterized by extreme division of labor; rather than have a skilled worker complete a number of tasks, many workers each completed a single, repetitive task.
In many respects, the classic Fordist, large-scale industrial organization was characterized by a highly centralized decision-making system, a strong hierarchical structure, and a low level of trust between workers and managers—a distrust that was rooted in part in class differences, with workers often coming from blue-collar, working class backgrounds and managers coming from white-collar, middle class backgrounds. One of the main features of the Fordist organization was its ability to produce vast quantities of products. Everything was done on a large scale.
In addition to fundamentally changing the technical nature of work in the 20th century, Fordism was also the catalyst for a sociopolitical revolution that changed the way that most people lived their lives.

In short, by the 1970s, capitalism faced a serious challenge to its legitimacy, largely due to the fact that it faced a crisis of capital accumulation. In other words, capitalism wasn’t doing what it was supposed to do—create wealth (i.e., capital) and happiness!
