This street runs through the neighborhood of University Heights, divides Fordham from Fordham-Bedford and finally runs along the northern border of Belmont. It begins at its eastern point as a continuation of Pelham Parkway and at its western point, continues over the University Heights Bridge into Manhattan, where it runs as West 207th Street. It is a two-way, four-lane road. East of Webster Avenue Fordham Road runs concurrent with U.S. Route 1 from Webster Avenue to Boston Road. Fordham Road is divided into East Fordham Road and West Fordham Road by Jerome Avenue following after the Manhattan grid, with address numbers for both the East Fordham Road and West Fordham Road increasing away from Jerome Avenue. It geographically separates the North Bronx from the South Bronx
Fordham Road is under the management of the Fordham Road Business Improvement District, a non-profit organization under contract with the city of New York. The BID maintains, develops, and markets the merchants along Fordham Road and hosts many community events throughout the year.
The station has three tracks and two side platforms. The middle track is generally not used in revenue service. The station was rehabilitated in 2004. It has old style signs painted over and covered up with new style signs, and features new fare control railings as a crossunder. The station has a wooden mezzanine, and two extra exits.
Fordham Road is the largest station on the Concourse Line in terms of space, as it contains numerous closed stairs and passageways. The southbound island platform widens at the north end of the station to facilitate a wall that splits it half, creating two "side" platforms. The northbound island platform is like others found throughout the system. During construction of the station, the main road of Grand Concourse was diverted into an underpass below Fordham Road, while the subway tracks were placed underneath either service road; the space in between the split southbound platform is likely where the underpass dips below grade-level.
Fordham Road – 190th Street (IRT Third Avenue Line)
Fordham Road – 190th Street was an express station on the demolished IRT Third Avenue Line in the Bronx. It was located at Fordham Road and Third Avenue, one block east of Webster Avenue, in the modern location of Fordham Plaza. Opened in 1901, the station was closed in 1973 and demolished in 1977 along with the rest of the Third Avenue Line. No trace of the station exists today.
History
The station opened on July 1, 1901 as part of a three station extension of the line north of Tremont Avenue – 177th Street. It was originally called Pelham Avenue, the former name of Fordham Road and Pelham Parkway. It served as a major transfer point to what is today the Metro-North Railroad's Harlem and New Haven Lines at the Fordham station, and St. John's College (now the main Rose Hill campus of Fordham University). This station served as the terminus of the line until May 21, 1902, when it was extended to Bronx Park Terminal. Between 1913 and 1916 under the Dual Contracts, a third track was added to the line to facilitate express service. A second extension to Gun Hill Road along Webster Avenue was also built during the Dual Contracts, opening in 1920.
