Food waste or food loss is food that is discarded or lost or uneaten. The causes of food waste or loss are numerous, and occur at the stages of production, processing, retailing and consumption.
As of 2013, half of all food is wasted worldwide, according to the British Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IME). Loss and wastage occurs at all stages of the food supply chain or value chain. In low-income countries, most loss occurs during production, while in developed countries much food – about 100 kilograms (220lb) per person per year – is wasted at the consumption stage.
Definition
The definition of waste is a contentious subject, often defined on a situational basis; this also applies to food waste.Professional bodies, including international organizations, state governments and secretariats may use their own definitions.
Definitions of food waste vary, among other things, in what food waste consists of, how it is produced, and where or what it is discarded from or generated by. Definitions also vary because certain groups do not consider (or have traditionally not considered) food waste to be a waste material, due to its applications. Some definitions of what food waste consists of are based on other waste definitions (e.g. agricultural waste) and which materials do not meet their definitions.
Food Waste: The Hidden Cost of the Food We Throw Out I ClimateScience #9
Worldwide, 30% of food is lost or wasted - that’s 1.6 BILLION tonnes of food every year! It is vital that people are aware of the impacts of food waste and what they can do to make a difference.

In this Our Changing Climate environmental video essay, I look at the problem of food waste. Specifically, I look at how food waste both in America and across the world is a massive problem for climate change, the environment, and hunger. By addressing food waste in farms, grocery stores, and at home, we could potentially feed billions of people and curb the massive emissions generated to make food and from food waste that ends up in the landfill. Food Waste, Global Hunger & You | #StopTheWaste
We at WFP know the value food has for the 100 million people we feed every year. We see the positive impact food has in people’s lives. There is enough food in the world to feed every child, woman and man on this planet. Yet, one-third of that food ends up rotting in trash bins, or spoiling during transportation and storage while 690 million people go to bed hungry every night.
