Fontys University of Applied Sciences is the largest Dutch university of applied sciences with several campuses located in the southern Netherlands. It offers 200 bachelor and master programs in the fields of technology, economics, social work, health care and teacher training. A selection of these programs is offered in English.
Organization
Fontys University of Applied Sciences presents itself as a learning community, which means that the focus of learning is on the development of professional and personal competences in small student groups, in close interaction with the society. Fontys maintains close relationships with industry, business and public services.
The overall management of Fontys University of Applied Sciences lies with the Executive Board. Both the Executive Board and the individual schools call upon the Fontys Support Unit for a range of services. The Support Unit itself comprises a series of departments including ITC services, Student facilities, Administration and Domestic facilities.
Applied science is a discipline of science that applies existing scientific knowledge to develop more practical applications, like technology or inventions.
Within natural science, disciplines that are basic science, also called pure science, develop information to predict and perhaps explain—thus somehow understand—phenomena in the natural world. Applied science applies science to real world practice. This includes a broad range of science fields from Engineering to Child Care.
A vocational university, sometimes called professional university, applied technological university, college of higher vocational studies or university of applied sciences, is an institution of higher education and sometimes research, which provides both tertiary and sometimes quaternary education and grants academic degrees at all levels (bachelor, master, and sometimes doctorate) in a variety of subjects.
In some countries, a vocational university more precisely grants Professional degrees like Professional Bachelor's degree, Professional Master's degree and Professional doctorates. The term is not officially used in many countries and an assignment to a certain type of university in a certain country's educational system is therefore difficult. The UK once had a very extensive vocational university sector with its polytechnic system dating back to the mid 19th century. Vocational universities are often regulated and funded differently (for example, by the local government rather than the state) from research-focused universities, and the degrees granted are not necessarily interchangeable.
The term literally means "school of higher vocational education". Although the Finnish Ministry of Education recommends the English term "polytechnic", the Rectors' Conference of Finnish Universities of Applied Sciences has decided to use the term "university of applied sciences".
Unlike universities, AMKs focus on R&D by applying previous knowledge, rather than producing new research. They have a very clearly legislated objective in regional development. As there is mandatory five-month practical training for all students, AMKs may be a good platform for dispersing applied knowledge throughout higher education. AMKs provide professionals for locally important purposes and are governed by the city, although they receive most of the funding from the state. No tuition fees are asked from the students.
Tallinn University of Applied Sciences (Estonian:Tallinna Tehnikakõrgkool) is a vocational university in Tallinn, Estonia, founded in 1992. It provides higher education in the field of engineering.
Tallinn College of Engineering is a legal successor of the Tallinn Technical Secondary School for Building and Mechanics established in 1962.
The Master of Applied Science degree program at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln is interdisciplinary and sufficiently flexible to meet the specific educational goals of individuals employed in a wide variety of applied life sciences.

Some of the scripting classes were really interesting and it was more like solving a puzzle to me and I found it really fun, so, I decided to switch over to that side of IT. With the Bachelor's of Applied Science we focus a lot more on project-based coursework versus just studying the theory behind all of the concepts we're learning. We talk about the latest news--we always have some assignment about research and making sure we have updated data. We're constantly doing projects and working in code and not just reading about it, so it's hands on learning for sure. Ken Hang has been a really big influence on my programming career and my work that I've done. He's able to provide us with a very strong understanding of how the industry works and things to prep for in the future. If it wasn't for Ken Hang, I wouldn't be here today. Because this is his baby--he built this program. And he was an amazing instructor before, and really looked up to him, and even more so now. It's exciting knowing that I'm going to be part of a graduating--first graduating class. We're kind of testing the waters here so it's kinda nice to be part of the first class that I assume many will follow. It's cool because they actually use our feedback and we've seen that in like how they're changing things with the second cohort--they take our feedback and they implement those changes. We get to help the next cohort. They're going through the same problems that we went through and now we're in a position to help them. And I take a lot of pleasure in helping other students." -
