Folle blanche was the traditional grape variety of the Cognac and Armagnac regions of France. It is also known as Picpoule (with various variations of spelling (Piquepoul, Picpoul), although it is in fact unrelated to the Picpoul of the Languedoc) as well as Gros Plant and Enrageat blanc. Folle blanche is an offspring of Gouais blanc, with the other parent so far unidentified.
It has been mostly replaced by its hybrid offspring Baco blanc due to phylloxera damage. Baco blanc (also known as Baco 22 A) is a cross of Folle blanche and the Vitis riparia × Vitis labrusca hybrid Noah. Folle blanche is also the parent of the very hardy and disease-resistant Baco 1 (or Baco noir), a cross of Folle blanche and a Vitis riparia variety. Baco noir and Baco 22 A, like Folle blanche and their other parents, produce a very acid wine. This makes them more suited to distillation than less acidic grapes.
Folle blanche is used in the Loire Valley area and in Brittanny around Nantes to produce Gros Plant du Pays Nantais, a very dry and often tartly acidic wine that pairs well with shellfish. There it is used both in the production of table wine as well as eau de vie.
Dry natural white wine with stone fruit flavors, bright acidity, light minerality and a crisp citrusy finish.
Tasting Notes: Apple, pear, lemon and lime.
Pairing Suggestions: Lobster Thermidor, Goat Cheese Toasts, Oysters

Folle Blanche from Chateau Jousseliniere Review

Folle Blanche Yaks: Baraillon Folle Blanche 2011, d'Esperance Folle Blanche 2002 (plus some wine)
I haven't been doing enough brandy videos recently, to my shame. But now we're hopping back in and going full nerd on it.
Today we pay homage to Folle Blanche, also known as Picpoule and Gros Plant, and the original grape of French brandy (before phylloxera wiped it out and it mostly got replanted with Ugni Blanc and Baco). I've done videos on 100% Folle Blanche Armagnacs before - e.g., the Tariquet 8 at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b9oNyjjRBJ4 and the Artez at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Qpih1nTNtl8 - but never really drawn attention to the unique nature and history of the grape. But today that's the main topic of discussion. We're reviewing another pair of Armagnacs, and then there's a bit of wonkery afterwards. Stats:

CHÂTEAU DE PELLEHAUT 2005/2021 | Folle Blanche Armagnac, wonderful citrus & herbal notes - Review
The Domaine/Château de Pellehaut is located in the Ténarèze.
It is a 300-year-old family business, which is currently run by Mathieu and Martin Béraut.
The domaine is not only known for its outstanding Armagnac, the variety of different wines is also impressive.
Pellehaut now has around 50 hectares of vineyards.
There is a large selection of different vintage Armagnacs.
Our Armagnac today is also a vintage Armagnac. At 15 years old, it is a fairly young Ténarèze Armagnac.
Only Folle Blanche grapes were used for this Armagnac and the Armagnac matured the entire time in a single cask with the number B215 in a wet cellar.

- Domaine de Baraillon Folle Blanche 2011 Bas-Armagnac (SCEA Claverie; bottled 10/19/21; 49% ABV), 87+/100
- Domaine d'Esperance Folle Blanche 2002 Bas-Armagnac (Cask No. 64, bottled 7/22; 49% ABV), 87/100
Guest starring a recent, 100% Folle Blanche batch of Atmosphères sparkling wine by Jo Landron, and a lot of history about winegrowing and brandy production in the area around Nantes ("Nantz" for you Brits) in the western Loire Valley.
Baraillon established itself in previous reviews (at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GQHCH2umeX0 and then during my birthday bash at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0dn9MzYgDJg ) as thoroughly rustic and totally phenomenal. But don't discount d'Esperance, the producers behind some nifty PM Spirits products (see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=90zRYvtW85E and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D0eJtbdUITY ), especially when they've got a good ten years' of aging beyond the folk from Lannemaignan. Very different brandies, but sharing in a delightful floral character. I think the Baraillon might be a hair bit better objectively, but really it's down to personal taste: both of these 'yaks are totally killer.
The Atmosphères was brilliant too, by the way. Stupid high acid even for "Gros Plant" that wasn't harvested early, and it paired beautifully with swordfish a few hours after this recording.
