Researchers at the MIT Media Lab's Camera Culture group are addressing that question with a new way to utilize time and space to shrink camera lenses down while adding new functions such as selective zoom range and enhanced spectral resolution.

Folded optics is an optical system in which the beam is bent in a way to make the optical path much longer than the size of the system. Prismatic binoculars are a well-known example. An early conventional film (35 mm) camera was designed by Tessina that used the concept of folded optics.
Fold mirrors are used to direct infrared light within the optical path of the James Webb Space Telescope. These optical fold mirrors are not to be confused with the observatory's deployable primary mirrors, which are folded inward to fit the telescope within the launch vehicle's payload fairing; when deployed, these segments are part of the three-mirror anastigmat design's primary element and don't serve as fold mirrors in the optical sense.

These new principles open doors to new capabilities for time- or depth-sensitive cameras, which are not possible with conventional photography optics.

Traditional DSLR cameras create photos by detecting light passed through a single large aperture and bulky lens barrel. The L16 is different. The L16 captures light through many small apertures and uses folded optics technology to bounce light off angled periscopic reflex mirrors and through slim, horizontally positioned lens barrels before reaching an optical sensor. The result is a camera capable of taking DSLR quality photos that can fit in the palm of your hand.
With the rapid development of faster frame rates and more light-sensitive camera sensors, why aren't camera lenses quickly evolving as well? Researchers at the MIT Media Lab's Camera Culture group are addressing that question with a new way to utilize time and space to shrink camera lenses down while adding new functions such as selective zoom range and enhanced spectral resolution.

Fold mirrors are used to direct infrared light within the optical path of the James Webb Space Telescope. These optical fold mirrors are not to be confused with the observatory's deployable primary mirrors, which are folded inward to fit the telescope within the launch vehicle's payload fairing; when deployed, these segments are part of the three-mirror anastigmat design's primary element and don't serve as fold mirrors in the optical sense.

MIT researchers have developed novel photography optics dubbed “time-folded optics” that capture images based on the timing of reflecting light inside the optics, instead of the traditional approach that relies on the arrangement of optical components. These new principles open doors to new capabilities for time- or depth-sensitive cameras, which are not possible with conventional photography optics.
