Flying Saucers from Outer Space (Holt, 1953) is a non-fiction book by Donald Keyhoe about unidentified flying objects, aka UFO.
In 1956 a science-fiction film credited as "suggested by" the book was made under the title Earth vs. the Flying Saucers, also known as Invasion of the Flying Saucers. The working titles of this film were Attack of the Flying Saucers, Invasion of the Flying Saucers and Flying Saucers from Outer Space. In a letter contained in the film's production file at the AMPAS Library, blacklisted screenwriter Bernard Gordon stated that he wrote the screenplay for this picture using the pseudonym Raymond T. Marcus.
Outer space, or just space, is the void that exists between celestial bodies, including the Earth. It is not completely empty, but consists of a hard vacuum containing a low density of particles, predominantly a plasma of hydrogen and helium as well as electromagnetic radiation, magnetic fields, neutrinos, dust and cosmic rays. The baseline temperature, as set by the background radiation from the Big Bang, is 2.7 kelvins (K) (−270.45 °C; −454.81 °F). Plasma with a number density of less than one hydrogen atom per cubic metre and a temperature of millions of kelvins in the space between galaxies accounts for most of the baryonic (ordinary) matter in outer space; local concentrations have condensed into stars and galaxies. In most galaxies, observations provide evidence that 90% of the mass is in an unknown form, called dark matter, which interacts with other matter through gravitational but not electromagnetic forces. Data indicates that the majority of the mass-energy in the observable universe is a poorly understood vacuum energy of space which astronomers label dark energy. Intergalactic space takes up most of the volume of the Universe, but even galaxies and star systems consist almost entirely of empty space.
In mathematics, Out(Fn) is the outer automorphism group of a free group on n generators. These groups play an important role in geometric group theory.
Out(Fn) acts geometrically on a cell complex known as Culler–Vogtmann Outer space, which can be thought of as the Teichmüller space for a bouquet of circles.
A point of the outer space is essentially an R-graph X homotopy equivalent to a bouquet of n circles together with a certain choice of a free homotopy class of a homotopy equivalence from X to the Bouquet of n circles. An R-graph is just a weighted Graph with weights in R. The sum of all weights should be 1 and all weights should be positive. To avoid ambiguity (and to get a finite dimensional space) it is furthermore required that the valency of each vertex should be at least 2.
A more descriptive view avoiding the homotopy equivalence f is the following. We may fix an identification of the fundamental group of the bouquet of n circles with the free group Fn in n variables. Furthermore we may choose a maximal tree in X and choose for each remaining edge a direction. We will now assign to each remaining edge e a word in Fn in the following way. Consider the closed path starting with e and then going back to the origin of e in the maximal tree. Composing this path with f we get a closed path in a bouquet of n circles and hence an element in its fundamental group Fn. This element is not well defined; if we change f by a free homotopy we obtain another element. It turns out, that those two elements are conjugate to each other, and hence we can choose the unique cyclically reduced element in this conjugacy class. It is possible to reconstruct the free homotopy type of f from these data. This view has the advantage, that it avoids the extra choice of f and has the disadvantage that additional ambiguity arises, because one has to choose a maximal tree and an orientation of the remaining edges.
Outer space comprises the relatively empty regions of the universe outside the atmospheres of celestial bodies.
Outer space may also refer to:
A flying saucer (also referred to as a flying disc) is a term for a supposed type of described flying craft with a disc or saucer-shaped body, commonly used generically to refer to any anomalous flying object. The term was coined in 1947 but was officially supplanted by the United States Air Force in 1952 with the broader term unidentified flying objects or UFO's. Early reported sightings of unknown "flying saucers" usually described them as silver or metallic, sometimes reported as covered with navigation lights or surrounded with a glowing light, hovering or moving rapidly, either alone or in tight formations with other similar craft, and exhibiting high maneuverability.
While disc-shaped flying objects have been interpreted as being sporadically recorded since the Middle Ages, the first highly publicized sighting by Kenneth Arnold on June 24, 1947, resulted in the creation of the exact term by U.S. newspapers. Although Arnold never specifically used the term "flying saucer", he was quoted at the time saying the shape of the objects he saw was like a "saucer", "disc", or "pie-plate", and several years later added he had also said "the objects moved like saucers skipping across the water." Both the terms flying saucer and flying disc were used commonly and interchangeably in the media until the early 1950s.
Flying saucers are dimpled discs made from rice paper, filled with sherbet. The first flying saucers were produced in the 1960s. They remain a popular sweet in the United Kingdom, with a 2004 survey naming them as the most popular sweet of all time, while a 2009 survey ranked them as the 12th most popular sweet in the country.
Flying Saucers was a magazine published and edited by Raymond A. Palmer, devoted to articles on UFOs and the Shaver Mystery. The magazine was first published as Flying Saucers from Other Worlds in 1957, before evolving into Flying Saucers in 1958. The initial title was designed to create confusion with a science fiction magazine Other Worlds, which Palmer also published and which overlapped for two issues. Such confusion may have been designed to overcome the difficulty that a new magazine in a new category would have in finding space on news stands, to help attract readership, or more likely both. The confusion continues to tax collectors of science fiction magazines to this day.
Flying Saucers From Other Worlds was first published in June 1957 and cost 35 cents an issue. The editorial by Ray Palmer on page 4 begins with "This is the first Flying Saucers From Other Worlds. Ray A. Palmer was Editor, Gray Barker was Eastern Editor and August C. Roberts was Photo Editor. Col. Ron Ormond was Western Editor several issues later. The front cover of issue number one was a composite from the movies Forbidden Planet" and "Captive Women". The editorial address was in Amherst, Wisconsin. The magazine itself was published by Palmer Publications, Inc. in Evanston, Illinois.

With the new ALBA keyboard, you do not need to tell your OS whether you prefer the F-keys to work as multimedia controls, or as regular F-keys. The "fn Lock" can be activated [Command + fn] and the F-keys are used as multimedia keys. And to use the F-keys as regular F1, F2, etc, just use the F-keys with the fn modifier. A glance at the fn Lock light tells you which mode you are in.
Measure equivalence is a measurable analogue of quasi-isometry. For instance, two lattices (co-compact or not) in a same Lie group are measurably equivalent by definition. We prove that for N bigger or equal than 3, any countable group that is measure equivalent to Out(Fn) is virtually isomorphic to it. I will discuss some of the tools introduced for this proof, and in particular, a notion of a canonical dynamic decomposition associated to a subgroup of which somehow generalizes the dynamical decomposition of a surface associated to a subgroup of Out(Fn) the mapping class group. This is a joint work with Camille Horbez.

In their 1986 work, Harer and Zagier gave an expression for the Euler characteristic of the moduli space of curves, M_gn, or equivalently the mapping class group of a surface. Recently, in joint work with Karen Vogtmann, we performed a similar analysis for Out(Fn), the outer automorphism group of the free group, or equivalently the moduli space of graphs. This analysis settles a 1987 conjecture on the Euler characteristic and indicates the existence of large amounts of homology in odd dimensions for Out(Fn). I will illustrate these results and explain how the Hopf algebra of graphs, based on the works of Kreimer, played a key role to transform a simplified version of Harer and Zagier's argument, due to Kontsevich and Penner, from M_gn to Out(Fn). This combined technique can be interpreted ...
