The infrastructure on the floor of the Baltic Sea has never played a more important role in our lives. At the same time, the risk it faces is growing rapidly thanks to geopolitical instability.
Patrik Fältström is Head of Security at Netnod, an independent internet infrastructure organisation. In these episodes of Shielding the Baltic Sea he explains, “Over the last 10 years, the threat situation has changed and the last two years in particular it's become a lot more dangerous.”
Patrik Gardesten Deputy Chief of the Swedish Navy, says the Baltic Sea’s variable salinity, temperatures and bottom topography means advanced sonar equipment is needed to identify threats. “All these factors affect how sounds spreads out and the spread of sound is important for us when we search for submarines and search for mines,” he says. “This of course affects the materials and equipment we need to carry out our mission.”
Angelica Persson, Business Development Analyst at Saab, explains the undersea environment is complex and advanced systems are needed to manage threats. “You need systems that deliver the right information at the right time to a potential decision maker,” she says.
We would like to thank the Swedish Armed Forces, the Finnish Defence Forces and the Swedish Coast Guard for footage and support.

The Baltic Sea, Located In Northern Europe, Is A Marginal Sea Of The Atlantic Ocean. The Baltic Sea Is Surrounded By The Scandinavian Peninsula, The Mainland Of Northern, Eastern And Central Europe, And The Danish Islands.
The Baltic Sea Covers A Total Surface Area Of Approximately 386,000 Square Km.
The Baltic Sea Has A Coastline Of Roughly 8,000 Km, And Borders Nine Countries,Which Are Denmark, Germany, Poland, Russia , Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia, Finland, And Sweden.
The Sea Has An Maximum Length Of 1600 Kilometers And A Maximum Width Of 190 Kilometers. It Is A Shallow Body Of Water, With An Average Depth Of Roughly 55 Meters And Its Deepest Point Is Approximately 459 Meters Below The Sea’s Surface. Due To Its Low Depth, Its Water Volume Is Low Compared To Other Major Water Bodies. It Has A Water Volume Of Nearly 21,700 Cubic Kilometers. It Has Less Water Volume Then Lake Baikal, Which Is Nearly 12 Times Smaller Than Baltic Sea And Has A Water Volume Of 23,600 Cubic Kilometers.
The Baltic Sea Drains Into The Kattegat Through The Danish Straits. The Kattegat Strait Is Usually Considered As A Part Of The Baltic Sea.
The Baltic Sea Is Often Called As The World’s Largest Brackish Inland Water Body. Its Water Salinity Levels Are Much Lower Than That Of The World Oceans, Due To The Inflow Of Fresh Water From The Surrounding Land And The Sea’s Low Depth. More Than 250 Rivers And Streams Empty Their Waters Into The Baltic Sea. The Baltic Sea's Drainage Area Is Roughly Four Times Bigger Than Its Surface Area And Is Home To About 85 Million People . Many Major Cities Such As Saint Petersburg, Stockholm, Riga, Helsinki, Gdansk, Tallinn, Kaliningrad, Szczecin, Gdynia, Kiel, And Espoo Are Located On The Coast Of Baltic Sea.

Treasure hunters Peter and Dennis were out on a typical day exploring the Baltic Sea when a very unusual image appeared on the sonar. A nearly 200-foot cylindrical object was something that had never been seen before. This documentary takes you on an extraordinary journey to find out what the object could be. Reviewed by multiple disciplines of scientists, and using advanced equipment, could this object be an ancient crash site from an advanced civilization millions of years ago?
