Flushing Avenue is a street running through northern Brooklyn and western Queens, beginning at Nassau Street in Fort Greene, Brooklyn, and ending at Grand Avenue in Maspeth. It divides the neighborhood of Williamsburg from Clinton Hill and East Williamsburg from Bushwick. After crossing the Queens border, the avenue serves as the dividing line between Ridgewood, Queens and West Maspeth. Flushing Avenue then terminates in Maspeth. Despite its name, however, the avenue does not extend to Flushing.
Flushing Avenue has seen considerable decline since its heyday in the early and mid-20th century. Some sections began to gentrify, to varying degrees, at the turn of the 21st century. In 2004, the city began a project to upgrade the water and sewer infrastructure on the western part of the road, and to repave it. The project was completed in 2008.
Description
The avenue is primarily an industrial thoroughfare, especially on its extreme western end, where it serves the Brooklyn Navy Yard Industrial Park to the north. The industrial park rents to over 200 tenants, primarily distributorships and light manufacturing concerns, though they also rent to a few artists. Mayor Michael Bloomberg proposed a redevelopment of the yard that would put retail space in the yard's west side and television and film studios the yard's east side. In this district, the south side of Flushing Avenue contains many abandoned business that were supported by sailors and ship workers before the government closed the yard.
Bellaire was a station stop along the Hempstead Branch of the Long Island Rail Road. Originally, it was the site of a station known as Brushville on November 27, 1837, which opened as a replacement for the former Flushing Avenue/Delancey Avenue station which was located in the vicinity of where Queens Village Station is today. The station was razed sometime in 1871 when Colonel A.M. Wood sold land across from his estate and built Inglewood Station returning service to the previous location. In June 1897, a new station called Brushville Road was built on what was then First Street (today's 212th Street), then on March 20, 1900, it was replaced by another new station called Interstate Park which was built in the place of the old Brushville Road Station, although it only served the Hempstead Branch. This station was renamed "Bellaire" in 1907, rebuilt as part of a grade elimination project on September 20, 1924, and finally closed around 1972. Nothing remains of the station except the concrete platform supports visible on both sides of the local tracks.
This underground station, opened on July 1, 1937 as part of the extension of the Crosstown Line from Nassau Avenue to Hoyt-Schermerhorn Streets. This station has two tracks and two side platforms. Both platforms have a lime green trim line on a darker green border and name tablets reading "FLUSHING AVE." in white sans serif font on a dark green background and lime green border. Underneath the trim line and name tablets are black name and direction tiles in white lettering.
The platforms each have one same-level fare control area at their south ends and there are no crossovers or crossunders to allow a free transfer between directions. Each area has a turnstile bank, two full height turnstiles (one exit-only and the other high entry/exit), token booth, and one staircase to the street. The one on the southbound side goes up to the southwest corner of Flushing and Marcy Avenues while the one on the Queens-bound side goes up to the northeast corner of Union Avenue (which becomes Marcy Avenue at the intersection of Flushing Avenue) and Gerry Street (which begins diagonally at the aforementioned intersection). The turnstile bank and token booth on the southbound platform is only open on weekdays and the two full height turnstiles provide entrance to and exit from the station at other times. The station formerly had another exit at the north end as proven by one gated staircase on each platform going up. Directional signs indicate that this mezzanine and crossover, which are now used for storage and employee space, led to Walton Street.
This elevated station, opened on June 25, 1888, has two side platforms and three tracks. The center express track is used by the J and Z trains weekdays in the peak direction. Both platforms have beige windscreens with red canopies supported by green frames and support columns along the entire length. The station signs are in the standard black plate with white lettering.
The station's only entrance/exit is an elevated station house beneath the tracks. It has two staircases from either southern corners of Flushing Avenue and Broadway, token booth, turnstile bank, a waiting area that allows a free transfer between directions, and a single staircase to each platform at their extreme north end. Each staircase landing has an exit-only turnstile to allow passengers to exit the station without having to go through the station house. Three elevators were installed in Fall 2003 to make this station ADA accessible due to its proximity to Woodhull Hospital. One of them is at the southwest corner of Broadway and Flushing Avenue and goes up to the adjacent staircase balcony. The other two go up to the platforms from the staircase landing.
